I can't remember any of the arguments against a poll of Beatles solo careers, so I think I'll put myself on the list to do that one in however many years.

Taking Devil's Tower (by mashed potatoes) (WilliamC), Sunday, 2 March 2014 14:14 (ten years ago) link

Cool. I hope there won't be zero living Beatles by that time.

Assuming Bee OK is on for Steely Dan, I'm thinking the Dylan poll will kick off mid-to-late Aprilish?

Just trying to plan...

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 2 March 2014 21:40 (ten years ago) link

If no single artist poll is going to run concurrently with Classic Rock, I guess that sounds about right.

Taking Devil's Tower (by mashed potatoes) (WilliamC), Sunday, 2 March 2014 21:54 (ten years ago) link

so i have been thinking about timing for Steely Dan. i should be able to go right after Pink Floyd. i need to ask for a couple of days off to run this thing properly. if i do this right this could happen the first week of baseball which would be amazing, i can watch MLB Extra Innings and post the results during the first week of the season. baseball does have 162 games in 180 days so if the timing doesn't work it really is not that big of a deal. but i'm thinking since "Classic Rock" and Steely Dan overlap somewhat then they probably shouldn't run at the same time. so this can be delayed if Some Dude is going to run that poll here in the near future. thoughts?

hi

Bee OK, Thursday, 6 March 2014 03:53 (ten years ago) link

i'm working like 70 hours this week and i don't know when my life is going to go back to normal so don't make any plans around me, i'll do Classic Rock someday, but do your thing whenever you want to do it and in the unlikely event that i may overlap i'll consult w/ you.

he always came across as a great guy in Kerrang! in the 90s (some dude), Thursday, 6 March 2014 04:04 (ten years ago) link

70 hour work weeks, don't envy that at all. so now we know why "Classic Rock" has not started yet. and thanks SD.

on deck: Steely Dan

doing some research now.

Bee OK, Thursday, 13 March 2014 02:30 (ten years ago) link

Big critics band in the '70s, had a few hit singles too. Songs were often allusive, cryptic, and vaguely sinister; others were extremely buoyant, though. Didn't really sound like anybody else.

The poll can start now.

Floyd results in progress: Come in Poll #49, your results are up (Pink Floyd ballot poll results)

BTW, if any poll-runners are set-up with FileMaker I can send you a database I put together that makes poll tabulation super easy and instantaneous.

For Eno, one of the side polls will be Favorite Production/Co-Production Credit. What would be one or two other good side polls?

do we need a Pogues/MacGowan poll?

resulting post (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 26 March 2014 02:35 (ten years ago) link

I still think there should be a Leonard Cohen poll.

Also maybe a kylie poll?

It occurred to me a few days ago that these ballot polls are like book clubs, but with an artist discog instead of Infinite Jest or Oprah's book of the month or whatever.

Anyway, some dude and tipsy -- what's the verdict, or do I chase down C.Grisso to do Sleater-Kinney?

WilliamC, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 12:49 (ten years ago) link

Oh yeah, that's really good. It's to my regret that I've been too busy lately to get stuck into the most recent voting threads, but the work done there is ilx's best work imo.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 14:51 (ten years ago) link

Checking in. I could get the S-K poll started, but I'm almost at the tailend of one of my biggest workloads of the year, so it would have to be sometime next week (say, most likely Tuesday or Wednesday). That would probably work out okay with the end of the Dan poll, and ensures we get it done before Corin drops another solo lp (she's due for one).

How About A Kiss For Your Cousin Doogie (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 2 April 2014 17:04 (ten years ago) link

This is down the road, but Yo La Tengo, which mookieproof was going to help me with, looks like it will happen sometime between next September and June. I can only do these during the summer, so I'll be asking for a handful of people to jump ahead.

clemenza, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 17:13 (ten years ago) link

So do we not have a live poll thread anymore that says when they are up and running?

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 20:15 (ten years ago) link

Things are calming down for me work-wise that I can actually imagine kicking off Classic sometime this month, but if Dylan gets started before I do I will give it a lil breathing room. Getting really excited about all the ideas I have planned for CR though.

CANS.... and D? (some dude), Wednesday, 2 April 2014 20:21 (ten years ago) link

NTI, that's one of this thread's functions. This one replaced the original "order and timing" thread on 1/1.

As long as somebody gets going early next week when Steely Dan results are winding up, I'll be happy. I should have asked Tipsy about the Dylan poll at the Knoxville FAP on Saturday.

Polled At Last: STEELY DAN - ILM Artist poll #50

Bee OK, Thursday, 3 April 2014 05:14 (ten years ago) link

I can kick off Dylan this weekend, but tbh I'd be happy to wait a few weeks -- so if either the Classick or S-K want to fire up, that's fine by me.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 3 April 2014 16:41 (ten years ago) link

I could do S-K next week.

How About A Kiss For Your Cousin Doogie (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 3 April 2014 16:43 (ten years ago) link

Sorry to be anal about this, but me and Sleater-Kinney are next, yes?

How About A Kiss For Your Cousin Doogie (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:25 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, I think that's the best route. SD and TM both seem to want more time to set up. Steely Dan is finishing today I believe, so you could start today or wait until tomorrow.

WilliamC, Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:31 (ten years ago) link

OK. I could get it up late Monday or sometime Tuesday.

Question for my voters: I had originally planned to do a main tracks poll focusing on the Sleater-Kinney catalog plus the related works of Brownstein & Tucker (i.e. Excuse 17, Heavens To Betsy, Wild Flag, Corin Tucker Band etc.). However, looking at recent polls like the VU and especially the Ferry near-shutout on the Roxy rollout, would you folks prefer the non-SK stuff as a side poll instead?

How About A Kiss For Your Cousin Doogie (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 6 April 2014 18:44 (ten years ago) link

yeah that might be better. happy for the dylan delay tbh, i can throw an s-k ballot together super quick but dylan one would take awhile.

balls, Sunday, 6 April 2014 19:18 (ten years ago) link

god bless you for not continuing this "oh just throw the solo stuff in too" travesty of a mockery of a sham

It's kind of hard me to imagine that anything outside of the main SK canon will crack the top whatever, though it'd be interesting to see if the Spells or Cadallaca stack up.

Ned Zeppelin (Leee), Monday, 7 April 2014 03:40 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, the Spells record is neat, and I'd sorta dig being able to vote for it in something, but no way is it going to take up slots in my SK ballot.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 7 April 2014 03:46 (ten years ago) link

One more vote for side poll.
