Soundslike! I am so glad to be able to reach out across the digital divide and give you a virtual fist bump. I was one of the lucky recipients of your original 1981 box years ago. I still remember standing in my tiny room in Red Hook and pulling out the box from the envelope and finding it hard to believe that someone had put all of this work into something and give it out for free. And the music...things never heard before or since. Years passed and sad to say, I lost place of the box. So happy to come across across this post on ILX and want to say thanks for the music...your achievement is towering.

Thanks very much! That's why I made it--hoping people for whom the music was new would have an experience like that. I miss physically making mixes--glad knowing the boxes are out there somewhere (I didn't manage to keep a physical copy myself, actually). You may have already seen, but all the '1981' mixes are available for download at the blog :

Just put up two new, related mixes, one focusing on late 60s/early 70s Library and soundtrack and early electronic pop; and the other the heirs to those sounds who picked up the torch in the 1990s through now. Both were inspired by the effect Stereolab and Broadcast had in serving as gateways into these kinds of sounds. I hope to follow up with a mix covering the Krautrock/motorik and late 70s/early 80s eletronic-tinged Library, and the 1990s-now offspring. Hope you guys enjoy it--thanks for listening! This one was percolating for a long time--some of these tracks have been earmarked for years (Bohannon's "I Found My Love on a Saturday" was the first song at my wedding six years ago!). Real life has almost entirely gotten in the way of making mixes, but I'm always listening (and purchasing, for better or worse) to so much new-to-me music and thinking of mixes I want to make. So really hope to do better next year than the one mix I finished this year. But at least the back catalogue is well over 50 mixes and people seem to trickle in.

Can I poll folks--does anyone here prefer the streaming (mixcloud) set up to downloadable mp3s? It takes a good amount of time to get the mixes on there with timestamped tracklists, but I'd like to have all the old mixes (or at least the best ones) on there, just not sure if it's worth the time...

Personally I much prefer downloads but YMMV. If Mixcloud had a direct download option I wouldn't care either way.

I prefer downloadable as I do all my listening on a Sansa clip or iPod classic.

Thanks guus--I'll always do the downloads (for as long as they last, since some get pulled down for whatever reason), but just wondering if setting up streams for old mixes is worth the time. Young people I talk to seem to stream exclusively, and then only if theres an app (which there is for Mixcloud). But it's probably a rare millenial who is interested in this sort of music...

Mom, sorry I missed your comment. Glad you like it! I'd say I put a similarly stupid amount of time and effort into culling, refining, sequencing and "packaging" all the mixes as this one, so you'll hopefully find a lot you like.

As far as my format preference... dealer's choice. I like streaming, so I can listen to it in different places, but I've also downloaded your mixes before. Either way.

Didn't know I had one! Something Wordpress sends out if you subscribe perhaps? It's a bummer for all blogs that the days of Google Reader ended--have to imagine almost everyone's audience became a fraction of what it was. Part of it was that I could make a new mix every few weeks a decade ago, and I'm lucky if I manage two a year now; but it used to be any mix I put up got hundreds or thousands of downloads, now they're lucky to top a hundred or two. Oh well--still makes me happy to put them together, and if a few folks find things that are new to them then I'm content.

Totally man. I remember getting your original 1981 box in the mail and freaking out, so cool.

It likely won't last long, but thanks to Mediafire doing away with file size restrictions, I've finally shared the *truly* complete '1981' box set, with the never-before-shared-online 'Briefcase' disc. Brings the total collection to well over 500 tracks, 28 hours or so. Enjoy, and pass the blog post along. Thanks!
