what you guys dont realise is that I found out yesterday Nick had planned the alltime poll with another (ex?)ilxor months ago(its part of a bigger picture apparently) so I had to drop the idea, but then they decided to let me help out with the ilm thing. It was going to happen anyway and William's projections are hilariously WRONG.

And yet when I join the queue for a poll, as you all were bitching about I receive a personal attack by William (not for the 1st time) who likes to make things about me as he cant hide his personal hatred.

There is no reason why some dude cant run his poll. The alltime poll wont even be voting for a month and another month for actual voting as decided by nick.

Look, we all decided on a community standard a few years back. It works really well. When multiple polls are running, it kinda cluttered up the board and it's difficult for the poll respondents. Not everyone has the time to devote to creating ballots for more than one of these at a time. I mean, a successful poll in everyone's eyes is gonna have more voters, right? We all take a break for the eoy polls and sometimes we shoehorn on special memorial polls when notable musicians die. I put in for the hair metal poll back in 2012 or something? I'm looking forward to running it maybe this fall. Don't really understand why scik mouthy and your poll should be some kinda magnificent exception to this.

how's life, Friday, 14 February 2014 12:57 (ten years ago) link

I think the point is more that everyone is focusing on Herman at the moment when they should also be spending some time yelling at Nick (who seems to have disappeared?)

dont yell at nick. Im a big boy I can handle all the bullshit. The point djp is no one should be yelling at anyone.

Guys, this thread and the ordering system was started for artist ballot polls. When I was talking about maybe doing a 'best music videos' poll I was *specifically* told that I shouldn't put that on this list, because it was a separate thing. So no, there is no community consensus, and no, these poll-obsessed weirdos don't need your permission to run something that will probably be terrible.

emil.y, Friday, 14 February 2014 15:11 (ten years ago) link

which artist is "the 'Classic Rock' canon"?

sent as gassed to onto rt dominance (DJP), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:22 (ten years ago) link

was started for

Reading comprehension, do you have it? People have started fucking around and putting various things in here. But fucking around with what a thing is for is not the same thing as having a community standard in place.

emil.y, Friday, 14 February 2014 15:24 (ten years ago) link

re: classic rock, emil.y's point might stand actually - I was the one who threw that one in the lineup here, totally disregarding the 'artist polls' thing. I think it might have just slipped past, or at that time it was so far in the future that nobody would have considered that it might pop up at the same time as a general/decade/genre poll.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 14 February 2014 15:24 (ten years ago) link

which artist is "Producers"? how about "Motown singles", "Stax" and "Disco"?

sent as gassed to onto rt dominance (DJP), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:26 (ten years ago) link

^ I refer you to the reading comprehension post

I refer you to the fact that the producers poll was suggested and claimed within two days of the beginning of the original thread.

i've got to say, speaking as notorious enemy of pollery and general mean git, that this system that's evolved seems to work really well for the poll fans - i think you probably maximize your contributions by narrowing your focus. and obv i hate "poll poll poll poll poll" all over this place but hey people are still free to express themselves in whatever ways they see fit (however quixotic) and these things live or die by people choosing to play or not

i wd respectfully ask our bird-house dwelling chum not to go nuts with the advertising tho - people who wanna play, will play

the undersea world of jacques kernow (Noodle Vague), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:33 (ten years ago) link

I mean, the actual argument here is that all of these polls are about individual songs and this one was a album poll and that kind of makes it its own thing, but no one seems to want to make that argument but instead wants to make easily disproved comments about the "intent" of organizing these polls (which IIRC was "stop running all of these damn polls at the same time, let's put them in order so we don't turn ILM into a budget version of rateyourmusic.com")

sent as gassed to onto rt dominance (DJP), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:34 (ten years ago) link

maybe we shd just finally create an "I Love Polls" sub-board

the undersea world of jacques kernow (Noodle Vague), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:36 (ten years ago) link

Classic rock has been in the queue, and widely anticipated, for ages - if the organisers want the board's kind-of-undivided attention for a couple of weeks, I'm in favour of respecting their wishes.

pariah newsletter (seandalai), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:37 (ten years ago) link

I'd be happy if all non-eoy polls went on the conveyor belt, without exception. At the moment though, I don't think that the "rules" are as strict as that.

pariah newsletter (seandalai), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:42 (ten years ago) link

lol, "easily disproved". Thread for coordinating the order and timing of ILM ballot polls

In that thread: some people ask whether or not non-artist polls should be included, some people talk openly about not including them, some people claim a space for their non-artist polls. Not in that thread: an establishment of a community standard.

IF mods want to decide that this thread constitutes a rule that needs to be followed for all polls, THEN they should enforce that. However, until that happens, Nick and AG are not breaking any rules, and they shouldn't be pilloried.

emil.y, Friday, 14 February 2014 15:45 (ten years ago) link

If you don't want to contribute to a poll, don't contribute to a poll. It's quite simple. I barely ever contribute to any. I barely ever look at them. Thus I have no idea why people get so pissed off about them.

the drummer is a monster (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:47 (ten years ago) link

and.... what was the outcome of that conversation? a producers poll, a disco poll, a Stax poll, etc etc. How is this a problem with my reading comprehension?

sent as gassed to onto rt dominance (DJP), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:48 (ten years ago) link

Your comprehension is clearly poor as you still seem to think I'm denying the existence of those things when I'm very obviously noting them, and claiming that they don't make a rule, and that nowhere in these threads is a rule created to deal with them.

emil.y, Friday, 14 February 2014 15:55 (ten years ago) link

yep

pariah newsletter (seandalai), Friday, 14 February 2014 15:58 (ten years ago) link

rules aren't necessarily formally laid out on a board like this, but the absence of a Rule doesn't mean there isn't a rule; the process you're thrashing thru now is part of establishing that kinda rule? like the difference between laws and social conventions

the undersea world of jacques kernow (Noodle Vague), Friday, 14 February 2014 16:01 (ten years ago) link

^^^

sent as gassed to onto rt dominance (DJP), Friday, 14 February 2014 16:06 (ten years ago) link

I mean basically the problem is that this thread and its predecessor work on the assumption that too many polls at once is bad for all of them - people can't make ballots, can't find time to participate in the threads, it's a drag. BUT: an unscheduled poll may, based on its topic, be really appealing to lots of people who aren't necessarily following the order-and-timing thread. They are, like the people making ballots in the current Albums poll, stoked to participate. That wouldn't be a problem, except now, the next person to start a poll that is on the 'schedule' is put in a bind: Do I start this long-scheduled poll, at the risk that much of ILM will see it as the late-comer that's adding to a pile-on? "Crap, I would totally have made a classic rock ballot, that sounds awesome, but..." Or do I wait, even though a) I've been waiting my turn, b) we just waited out the EOY polls, and c) waiting is in turn holding up every other poll further down in the queue?

Unless there's a larger ILM consensus to stick with the ordered-and-timed schedule, then that schedule can always get derailed completely by an unscheduled (I'm trying to avoid saying "rogue") operator.

My feeling is that there has been something of an ILM consensus about the validity of the order-and-timing threads in the three years since they've been in use. It's possible of course that I'm overstating that, or reading too much into the success of the polls they've spawned. I do think the results of this system have met with much more public approval than the results of a hypothetical world where all of the last twenty polls had taken place the same month would have! We don't really have a moderation test case though - the rogue Madonna poll was locked, but because it was a swipe at a particular poster, not specifically because the O&T list was "law."

It might be that this current situation is sort of a once-in-a-blue-moon freak storm, just because both Classic Rock Canon and Favorite Albums Ever are kind of broad-base things that you expect lots of ILMers might get on board with - and have to split their time between. Whereas I'm not sure that's true of some artist vs. artist combos - but this is ILM, a place more likely than anywhere on the internet to have people who are fans of both Billy Joel and suicide metal or whatever.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 14 February 2014 16:15 (ten years ago) link

ha i guess i did end up saying "rogue" but ykwim

Doctor Casino, Friday, 14 February 2014 16:16 (ten years ago) link

the process you're thrashing thru now is part of establishing that kinda rule?

Yeah, I agree with this. A "crisis-point" happens and the reactions to it will establish what happens in the future. Which looks like it may well be all non-eoy polls... on the conveyor belt, without exception, and that will be fine. I just feel like there is an unfair reaction going on here, when this is more the establishing case than a rogue rule-breaker.

emil.y, Friday, 14 February 2014 16:16 (ten years ago) link

yeah this feels more like a test case than a shocking faux pas

the undersea world of jacques kernow (Noodle Vague), Friday, 14 February 2014 16:18 (ten years ago) link

firmly in the "starting a huge poll on your own is a dick move" camp, fuck that

k3vin k., Friday, 14 February 2014 16:19 (ten years ago) link

It's not really the first time we've been over this, tbh - it's come up in reference to other polls with some of the same characters involved, but it played out on other threads and I wouldn't say that a final consensus was reached.

I won't be voting in the albums poll for all the above reasons, but if I'm honest I don't know if I would have anyway - I don't know as many albums as some folks and my ballot would probably be pretty corny/ignorant/naive.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 14 February 2014 16:22 (ten years ago) link

obv compromise is slot all-time poll in the queue and nominations can continue until said time it's due to start.

I'm planning on setting up a dozen socks, then all of us submitting ballots made up solely of Sgt Pepper, Blonde On Blonde, Blue, Nevermind, etc etc

Ismael Klata, Friday, 14 February 2014 18:06 (ten years ago) link

i apologize if my 2 testy posts yesterday stirred the pot for this maybe kind of unnecessary clusterfuck. truth be told the classic rock poll will probably be sooner than later, i was just annoyed.

I regret airing out my problems with AG on this thread; AG, I apologize. My feelings don't rise to the level of hatred as you characterized them, but the difference is meaningless when I show my ass in public like that.
