Hey! The second half of Carnival of Wife was boring dadrock but the first half of it was lovely melodic Ride as we know and love them. So there.

::we now return you to your regularly scheduled vitriolic outburst of hatred::

DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE!!!!!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 12:46 (twenty years ago) link

Am I the only one who really loves both GBA and Carnival? The strange thing with Carnival for me is that I totally LOVE 5 tracks and can't be bothered by the other 7. But those 5 are SO good IMO that I just love the whole album. I know it's dad rock, but I don't care.

POO of both albums seems impossible. Carnival is probably the easiest: 'Only Now'. The melancholy!
GBA: 'Twisterella'? 'Chrome Waves'? 'OX4'? 'Leave Them All Behind'? Don't know...

Crispijn, Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:06 (twenty years ago) link

Only Now is my LEAST favourite song on all of Carnival. Yeesh!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:09 (twenty years ago) link

I always loved Grasshopper on the B-side of Leave Them All Behind.

And I'm so downloading that live gig when I get home.

James, Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:21 (twenty years ago) link

It still goes back to "Leave Them All Behind," for me...a song which brings to mind (alas,) the Spinal Tap phrase about "the majesty of rock," but...phew. What a monster that song is.

I gots no axe to grind with "Carnival of Light," of which I dig portions, and I happen to think "Black Nite Crash" is acceptable fake-Stooges...

M Specktor (M Specktor), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 14:55 (twenty years ago) link

i still love their take on the creation's 'how does it feel to feel', but that's an anecdote.

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 15:16 (twenty years ago) link

"Seagull" for sure. "Vapour Trail" is nice but a little bit too twee for me.

Clarke B. (stolenbus), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 16:28 (twenty years ago) link

Like A Daydream, because everyone else has said Leave Them All Behind already.

I like the intro to Chrome Waves plenty.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 16:28 (twenty years ago) link

The cello on "Vapour Trail" is ever so slightly out of tune, too, which kind of takes away from the grandeur the song aims for (which "Seagull" in its noise flurry achieves). I mean I know it's indie and they're not like Chicago or anything, but man, you'd think a cellist would have at least some sort of ear, it not being an instrument you just kinda pick up and learn.

Clarke B. (stolenbus), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 16:30 (twenty years ago) link

"twisterella" and "leave them all behind" cassingles are the only good things they did IMHO.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 16:35 (twenty years ago) link

Carnival Of Light! WOOOOO

In all seriousness, "I Don't Know Where It Comes From" is incredible.

Samuel Bloch, Tuesday, 24 June 2003 17:33 (twenty years ago) link

There can be only one... "Leave Them All Behind". That one part towards the end when the phased guitar lead comes in is one of my favorite moments in music ever.

The "Leave Them All Behind" single is the greatest thing ever, you've got LTAB, a nicely roughed up version of "Chrome Waves" and "Grasshopper".

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 17:52 (twenty years ago) link

Except that single has, by default, the single edit of LTAB, so no. You need the full damn thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 17:59 (twenty years ago) link

Like a Daydream

Tracks 3->6 on the first album

Twisterella

I got Mark Gardener to play "In a Different Place" when he came to Detroit earlier this year. One of these days I'll post the pics from that on my website.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 18:03 (twenty years ago) link

As it tends to occur with most bands whose singles i'd collected, the new remasters offer a bunch of tasty's only hereto available as a b-side -- and yes, the single version of LTAB is the equal of "boar-hog teats" -- and anotherthing, Tarantula is utter rubbish (as was (most of) Carnival).

--The remasters, though, any comment on their improved headroom?

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 18:40 (twenty years ago) link

I love Carnival of Light. It was the first Ride record I ever heard, and it has a special, special place in my heart. (And 'Crown of Creation' is my favourite song off it, for reasons best left unmentioned.)

'Vapour Trail' for me. My tape of 'Nowhere' died from too much rewinding back to that song.

cis (cis), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:03 (twenty years ago) link

like a daydream, cause it was the first one i heard. 'today' is second, 'todeay forever' was their most perfect release, i will treasure it always.

keith (keithmcl), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:34 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, today forever is the top of the pile, especially the fishy sleeve

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:43 (twenty years ago) link

"Seagull", preferably live. Loved the early Ride gigs, but even at the height of my regard for the band the albums were kinda flat. Had totally lost interest after the 2nd LP.

Wandering Boy Poet, Tuesday, 24 June 2003 23:32 (twenty years ago) link

All due respect to the early records, but their place in Valhalla was secured by their digging up Jon Lord and letting him Hammond all over 'Moonlight Medicine'.

Jeff Wright, Wednesday, 25 June 2003 02:09 (twenty years ago) link

seeing the ride and lush tour when i was a teenager changed my life, it didn't actually, but what about those days when you actually wanted to see opening bands ride/lush, ride/slowdive, catherine wheel/slowdive, house of love/catherine wheel, even bloody revolver and the dreadful drop nineteens.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 02:24 (twenty years ago) link

MarkH:

you're not alone, "Taste" is the best one, with "Seagull" a close second.

beaty (beaty), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 04:50 (twenty years ago) link

I never actually answers the question. Um, LTAB I guess. Though there are plenty others i might say after just hearing them.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 10:05 (twenty years ago) link

I completely forgot about like a daydream , so I'm changing my mind to that.

and also I'm off to buy a cd or two to replace my v old vinyl copies.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 10:15 (twenty years ago) link

Ride Reunion?
http://www.nunuworldmusic.co.uk/photos/040303/8.jpg

I still wished I'd done something to Andy Bell.. for being in Oasis and all that.

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 10:33 (twenty years ago) link

"Kaleidoscope", for its aggressive sugary pop-ness. why oh why was it never a single ?

darren (darren), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 11:06 (twenty years ago) link

God, he looks so old. What's wrong with his head? That man is the same age as me. That scares me.

DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE... (sorry.)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 11:11 (twenty years ago) link

surely that was Chapterhouse Kate?

HMV in Uxbridge = NOT ONE RIDE CD!!!!!!!!!!

chris (chris), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 11:52 (twenty years ago) link

What was Chapterhouse?

kate (kate), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 11:58 (twenty years ago) link

Chapterhouse? Big swirly dreampop guitars, angelic harmonies, long greasy hair and a drum sample from "When the Levee Breaks."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 13:21 (twenty years ago) link

Chapterhouse did DIE DIE DIE didn't they (or am I completely imagining a 13 minute long swirly bit of cool nonsense?)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 13:28 (twenty years ago) link

I know what Chapterhouse the band was. DUH! I was asking Chris what he thought I was referring to Chapterhouse in the previous post.

Big swirly dreampop guitars, angelic harmonies, long greasy hair and a drum sample from "When the Levee Breaks."

I am so easily pleased...

Cross-post... whoa...

I was telling Goldrush to DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE. If Chapterhouse want to help, they're certainly welcome to!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 13:29 (twenty years ago) link

Don't you "DUH!" me, young lady.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 13:34 (twenty years ago) link

Don't you patronise me, old man!

;-)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 13:37 (twenty years ago) link

Ah, you kids today.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 13:46 (twenty years ago) link

Me and Mark Gardener are BOTH older than you, Raggett!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 13:50 (twenty years ago) link

Think about what you're saying. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 13:54 (twenty years ago) link

I'm fat and bald and old? Waaaahhhhhhh!!!

It looks like he's bleached what's left of his hair. What is he THINKING?!?!?

kate (kate), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 13:57 (twenty years ago) link

Heh heh -- he HAS. Donut Bitch confirmed this at his recent show in Seattle. Thatch falling out and bleached. Checking mail from yesterday via A Secret Source for more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 14:12 (twenty years ago) link

read this thread yesterday, then got out GBA for another spin and i'll be damned if it isn't one of my top 5 of ALL TIME. absolutely brilliant songs, solid production and the track order/progression owns. how can you not like this album?!

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 17:34 (twenty years ago) link

gba would have been better if they had swapped out 'not fazed' and 'mousetrap' with the b-sides 'howard hughes' and 'stampede' from the twisterella ep.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 23:49 (twenty years ago) link

yeah those guys losing their hair should all be shot hey

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 23:55 (twenty years ago) link

Heh heh -- he HAS. Donut Bitch confirmed this at his recent show in Seattle. Thatch falling out and bleached.

He was at the BJM/Lovetones show. Hair massacre confirmed.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 03:32 (twenty years ago) link

I know this, I already know this, and it doesn't make me that sad. I'm just distressed about the Eminem bleachjob. THAT worries me.

kate (kate), Thursday, 26 June 2003 07:15 (twenty years ago) link

one year passes...
Just got back from a Melbourne to Sydney drive and played Nowhere through once at the beginning of the trip and again at the end. Awesome too.

Very nice, that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Isn't it? Hadn't actually heard the record in many years, but it really held up. Fantastic.

piers (piers), Monday, 20 September 2004 00:54 (nineteen years ago) link

"Like a Daydream"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 20 September 2004 06:46 (nineteen years ago) link

This thread is hilarious. I mean, that's a beginner's guide to shoegazing, isn't it? The pretty bit "cello cello cello cello cello" then the big, ugly, wall of sound MBV explosion "DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE!!!!"

The 120 Days Of Streatham (kate), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Love this stuff but bonus DVDs do nothing for me. Now, if they included a digital download for the live gig too...
