This game bored me to tears.

American football is fucking great; speaking as someone too scrawny and anti-social to play it on a team at any point in my life. Soccer is a horrible communist abomination.

Has it been 10 years since Half Life? Daaaaaaaaamn. I remember playing Counter Strike at my first office job.

Not getting into this argument, but American sports are based around the draft system, which seems to me to be the only currently existing example of full-scale Marxism in the Western world. Football, on the other hand, is straight-up capitalism: the team who has the richest Russian oil magnate/Italian media mogul/faceless Saudi investment group bankrolling it wins the most trophies.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I have an anthology of MEGA reviews from like 1995, this UK sega mag reviewing every genesis game, and they give madden 93 and 94 the second highest scores of *anything* (Sonic 2 is top). And the whole review they're apologizing, saying look, they don't even know the rules of the stupid sport, but this is amazing.

Also Madden 2008 on PS2 with the insane league where you fight invisible icemen and then DEVILS IN HELL = late flowering.

Tin Pan Alley Tetrapaks 47 Upper Roarington Silly Nannies 6

blueski, Sunday, 4 May 2008 17:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Sports games that have wacky side-shit like that are the best. FIFA has never been better than when you could play IN THE 1930S, with the players all Brylcreamed up and with a sepia tiny camera shot.

xp

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 17:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Seriously whatever you think of american football, those early-mid nineties madden games have as pixel-perfect a sense of inertia as Sensible Soccer does.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Sunday, 4 May 2008 17:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Aren't Madden games more "tactical" than "smooth" though, presumably like EA Rugby?

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Half-Life cover character = nerdiest looking 'hero' ever?

Surely a huge part of its success! You play as a rogue nerd whose nerdy place of employment suddenly becomes exciting and intense and YOU SAVE THE DAY!

re: #1, I still think Tetris has a huge shot at it, with SMB3, Civ, and the usual RPG suspects also being contenders.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

#1 Tetris, #2 Civ

Raw Patrick, Sunday, 4 May 2008 17:43 (sixteen years ago) link

The later ones (which I love too) are totally tactical, yeah, these interlocked series of satisfying minature puzzles? Defence is way more boring in them though, as a cost.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Sunday, 4 May 2008 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Yea, you're right Dom, but not at the youth/school levels.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 4 May 2008 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

FF7 already eliminated not boding well

yeah i remember a lot of this sort of thing which only added to the WTFness

DG, Sunday, 4 May 2008 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, but I think FF3 and ChronoTrigger may have a broader base of support...

Question for Dom - did games tend to get on the charts through a few high-placed votes or a swell of lower rankings? Like, what was the lowest "highest position"?

I'll check this at a later point, but in general old school arcade games got a wide spread of low votes, but sports games got a few high placed ones. In general.

Ok, I'm going to complain about the rank of the original Legend of Zelda. Fuck this. This game is still fun. I played through it in 2006 when my girlfriend was at work and I wasn't feeling good in Boston.

I wish KD and We <3 Katamari had been reduced to a single nom. Should be way higher than this.

ha i like this! someone write a paper stat. btw you left out salary caps and revenue sharing which make american sports even more communistic. (tho baseball doesnt have a salary cap)

jhøshea, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I was going to say the same thing as Dom about UK football - particularly the 'false consciousness' that there is some meritocratic system in it. I don't know shit about that foreign football.

why are sensible soccer etc condensed into one nom and these others split up?

Arbitary decision to make sports games series and non-sports games not.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:22 (sixteen years ago) link

When we do this again in a few decades, I vote for things can only be condensed if they are self-evidently the same game AND the same engine. So Katamari is one entry, but the various sports series or King's Quest or whatever aren't.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

when we do this again zelda and metriod should be in the top 10

jhøshea, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:25 (sixteen years ago) link

When we do this again the top 20 should just be C64 games with digitized speech.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Super Metroid and Link To The Past still have their shots. I would argue that both games are basically the NES games, but with better grahpics and a lot more depth.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:34 (sixteen years ago) link

SB2 was good game apart from the megadrive version had some weird bugs

DG, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:35 (sixteen years ago) link

It's basically Rollerball: The Game. Endlessly captivating, probably the first game it was ever fun to play through an entire league season of. Lots of wacky power ups and opportunities for bank shots, bonus points for crippling opponents.

xxxxp

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:36 (sixteen years ago) link

glad my nomination made it, didn't think it would

best Bitmap Bros game easily - they pretty much dined out on this as all their other games were meh at best. always intricate graphics and excellent music...but only with SB2 did they get the gameplay bang on imo
(nb never played anything they did after Magic Pockets)
