All of their tortillas fall apart when I try to use them for tacos, and the flour tortillas have an odd naan-like taste.

Immediate Follower (NA), Sunday, 15 December 2013 01:21 (ten years ago) link

I like their handmade tortillas, but they can be ridiculously thick around the edges and have that naan taste, too.

one month passes...

the chile-onion flour tortillas are pretty good!

also digging:

-dried green beans (they have these stocked next to the potato chips, popcorn, etc.)
-no-sugar-added dark chocolate with almonds
-the greens+ energy bars
-the prepared boneless/skiness roasted chicken strips, because shut up, that's why

i'm still mourning the loss of my beloved green curry tuna, but tj's sai tung green curry & red gaba rice is pretty good, at least as good as what you'd get at the vegan thai joints around here.

I could murder a box of green curry tuna but before they dropped it I was starting to notice the sweetness and not as much...something. Dunno. So hungry right now.

I wish they'd just put the soyrizo in a plastic bag, though. I get red stuff everywhere.

the new soyrizo is not vegan:

That sucks. And like the guy who wrote that, I too still miss the roasted flaxseed peanut butter.

What kind of sauce and cheese? I find that TJ's block cheeses are pretty great (big ups to the X-tra X-tra Sharp New York Cheddar), all of the shredded ones I've tried have been horribly bland (Mexican, mozzarella, etc) with the exception of the sharp cheddar.

The chicken fried rice is pretty great, but the chimichurri rice is EXCELLENT, esp when you mix a protein in. I had some leftover shredded pork and it was so supreme.

peanut butter chips are next level, totally upped my daily trail mix game

What kind of sauce and cheese?

I've been kind of lazy with it, tried enchilada sauce (bland) and kind of intuitively whipped up tomato and adobo sauce (better), I plan to make cilantro pesto next... For cheese I've actually been going with Mexican "Quesadilla cheese" from the super market - I just use a little bit in slices (like a margherita pizza) and throw on some mushrooms, soyrizo and sliced red jalapenos.

Frozen mango chunks are an amazing snack FYI, esp in the summer, just grab a bunch out of the freezer and eat

musically, Tuesday, 27 May 2014 03:51 (nine years ago) link

two months pass...

I bought this trail mix that I thought was mainly a mix of honey-roasted and regular peanuts. I start eating it and there are huge chunks of peanut brittle in here? It's like 20 percent peanut brittle. It's delicious but not exactly a healthy treat.

Of all the TJ's snacks and treats my boss has sent me over the years, my favorite is the dark chocolate pistachio toffee.

Harper Valley PTSD (WilliamC), Wednesday, 6 August 2014 15:22 (nine years ago) link

joe's o's are kind of gro'ss. pale and flavorless.

a series of sleeps (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 6 August 2014 15:49 (nine years ago) link

I like the new-ish Happy Trekking trail mix - almonds, cashews, pistachios, chocolate, cranberries, and cherries - but I probably shouldn't be eating chocolate regularly. My goto mix is the Sweet and Salty (something like that) one that has nuts, cranberries, and little chocolate/butterscotch/white chocolate chips.

nickn, Thursday, 7 August 2014 00:01 (nine years ago) link

the dark chocolate pistachio toffee.

SO MANY TIMES YES. The toffee destroys my teeth, though. I will also eat an entire bucket of the dark chocolate peanut butter cups but it's too hot right now--I'll get back to them in the fall.

the herbal tea with the fox on it -- yesssss, very good
"spicy chicken sausage" with some sort of korean seasoning - revolting, easily the worst sausage i have eaten (rather, tried to eat) in years

How is the canned chili? iirc they have several varieties; I hear turkey is good but I WANT OPINIONS

Also I am going tonight and I ALWAYS freeze up and never know what to get so if someone could hold my hand and tell me some nice fings to buy, or to make a recipe with, I wuld be truely forever greatful

Gay Fire Beautiful Dong (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 17:57 (nine years ago) link

Canned chili is okay. I mean, it's definitely canned chili, but it's decent enough that you don't feel like you're eating dog food.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 18:01 (nine years ago) link

was gonna rep pizza dough but ;_;

I'm slowly and begrudgingly coming to the realization that the fresh pizza dough (which I seem to by constantly) just isn't all that good.

Mr Veg has a long-standing addiction to their Meditteranean Hummus, which is pretty much the king of non-homemade hummus in our houses

I always feel guilty when I buy the smaller hummus tubs because I feel like they lack the value of the larger tub hummus flavors. but this sounds good, and I may have made up that bit about larger tub value.

Bitterer than Bitter (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

the tomato and basil hummus is bascially marinara, however

Bitterer than Bitter (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 18:22 (nine years ago) link

The edamame dip is godlike. The bags of frozen boneless chicken breasts for $7 are a good deal and I use them a lot (there are also bags of thighs if you prefer).

I don't normally use TJ's own brand of diced tomatoes bc they have too many stems in them--I usu pay more for the Sclafani or San Marzano ones at a regular store (when I can find them).

The smoked trout is p good? And the price on a package of garlicky, salty Boursin cheese is about HALF what grocery stores charge, so I always get Boursin at TJ's.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 18:40 (nine years ago) link

be warned the garlic hummus will leave your breath reeking of garlic more than almost any other garlic food i can recall

Also their beef jerky is my favorite outside of getting locally made stuff from some small northern town.
