That's a flawed (leaves out sales in numerous countries) biz sales chart but it includes some interesting songs

The Guardian wont ever do that EZ. Their writers and readers look down on it.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:46 (ten years ago) link

hmm?

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:47 (ten years ago) link

except for Dom Lawson obviously

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:47 (ten years ago) link

Pimp themselves? Is that it? Because let me tell you, my ballot did not effect much on that list.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:48 (ten years ago) link

Nice to see Summoning on that list!

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:48 (ten years ago) link

no no no, Im jusy saying that you will never see a metal list on the guardian. You wont even see it represented in their eoy poll. Places like that usually have a token entry at best. They're as bad as every other site for ignoring certain genres.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:49 (ten years ago) link

I can't deny that and I'm as guilty as anyone apart from Dom. I find metal utterly alienating, sorry.

Deafening silence (DL), Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:52 (ten years ago) link

xp

Well my mind doesn't grade music numerically so lists are a waste of time and space as a rule, filed away next to games of "Babe or Minger", but it is nice to see "oh cool we listen to a lot of the same records"
― fear of zing failure

This misses the point. If you only focus on the top 3-10 on the lists you'd get the illusion that people listen to the same stuff, but it's just not true. Despite ballots being limited to a measly 10, Pazz & Jop for example usually has a couple thousand albums. If the ballot were expanded, it would probably get near 10,000, with more varied results near the top too. I always thought these lists were an opportunity to check out stuff you didn't discover yourself previously. I guess some people just aren't interested in that.

xxp I agree it would be great to have a weekly digest of the best articles, think pieces, reviews and interviews from music sites for Kindle. I have cheap Kindle subscriptions to Pop Matters and The Onion, but lately they've been excluding the music pieces, argh!

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:56 (ten years ago) link

Is a Whiney doing his noise list for Spin before he goes?

grumbling führer (NickB), Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:58 (ten years ago) link

no worries DL its not a personal attack on you or anyone. I get the feeling the Guardian would be like that whoever they employed but its not just the guardian anyway.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 12 December 2013 18:09 (ten years ago) link

In terms of features, the Guardian does more metal than any of the other UK broadsheets, and more reviews, too. But it's a fight to convince print section editors that they should carry it. I've been able to get "classic" metal in; I've been able to get some young Brit metal in; when I was editing Film&Music, we covered a fair bit. But people who have no interest in metal require a big sell: "They burn churches1" or "They worship Satan!" or "They're the wildest band in the world." Saying: "Metal people think this band is really important" doesn't cut it. Sadly.

Unsettled defender (ithappens), Thursday, 12 December 2013 18:36 (ten years ago) link

But people who have no interest in metal require a big sell: "They burn churches1" or "They worship Satan!" or "They're the wildest band in the world."

That's pretty sad & depressing actually :( Would have hoped The Guardian would be above such stereotypes. Imagine all music coverage was based on stereotypes?

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 12 December 2013 18:48 (ten years ago) link

All music coverage IS based on stereotypes.

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 12 December 2013 18:49 (ten years ago) link

Obviously I listen to a lot more than just metal but every year these lists that have the same top 10s practically ignore a LOT of what is going on.

xp

dan that is depressing then

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 12 December 2013 18:50 (ten years ago) link

my favorite discovery from these year-end lists are john wizards (tbh i think curmudgeon mentioned them to me right before i started seeing them in a ton of lists) - cannot stop listening

You could totally sell metal in the same way as jazz, avant and experimental music these days I reckon.

I'm kinda hoping the exact opposite is true, actually.

I love that Moderat album, especally "Milk" (which seems kind of odd to be a standout track, considering it's a subdued shuffle groove with minimal expansion that goes on for over seven minutes, but all seven of those minutes are perfect)
