Strange to read that a breakup with Alexa Chung is what inspired the Arctic Monkeys album. She's the worst thing about FUSE News. You'd think the songs would be more celebratory. Perhaps when Alex Turner dates a real woman the songs will be even better.

Uh.

In terms of EOTY wipeouts, Mosquito is this year's Centipede Hz. RIP GAPDY.

Deafening silence (DL), Monday, 2 December 2013 17:33 (ten years ago) link

I mean, I know this is ILM, but that little slice of casual misogyny really did come from out of nowhere.

Interesting Magnet list. I haven't heard all of those, but the Wooley, Rempis and Mazurek discs are all really good.

Bill Meyer's list, totally trustworthy guy as far as music recommendations go ime.

If you are going to express casual misogyny, you have to have good beats to go along with it.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 2 December 2013 17:53 (ten years ago) link

Haven't heard these from RS list:

37. The So So Glows - Blowout
36. Waxahatchee - Cerulean Salt
29. Bombino - Nomad

― Fastnbulbous, Monday, December 2, 2013 12:24 PM (42 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Waxahatchee is Top 20 for me. Recommended if you think Kathleen Edwards might sound good doing Exile-era Liz Phair.

a fifth of misty beethoven (cryptosicko), Monday, 2 December 2013 18:11 (ten years ago) link

Waxahatchee + Bombino both great imo.

Mordy , Monday, 2 December 2013 18:13 (ten years ago) link

I don't know who Alexa Chung even is, but that didn't come across to me as misogynistic as it did a personalized Alexa Chung burn.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 2 December 2013 18:14 (ten years ago) link

No, Alexa Chung is an annoying celebrity who is famous for being famous, it's still VERY CLEARLY sexist.

that's all i saw too
i don't even know who she is but if she is a female human being, she is probably a "real woman"
it's disappointing to read shit like that

sweat pea (La Lechera), Monday, 2 December 2013 18:24 (ten years ago) link

I can't believe people would even put themselves out there defending that statement from allegations from sexism until I remember that last month we had a poster defending the position that the dick-dressed-up-in-blackface picture Lily Allen tweeted at Azealia Banks wasn't actually in blackface

deX! (DJP), Monday, 2 December 2013 18:28 (ten years ago) link

Depressing that such basic shit still requires explaining

lex pretend, Monday, 2 December 2013 18:30 (ten years ago) link

Nah, I wasn't really putting myself out there defending it. I was just sharing how it struck me the first time I read it. I agree there's no reason to bring up her womanhood qualifications.

Also, now I know who Alexa Chung is.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 2 December 2013 18:35 (ten years ago) link

But really, thanks for the dogpile everybody!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 2 December 2013 18:38 (ten years ago) link

i'm not dogpiling on anyone
i'm just disappointed that someone would use that kind of "real woman" language and i also wondered what on earth makes her less than real and who is an example of a "real woman"? just a lot of questions, as usual.

sweat pea (La Lechera), Monday, 2 December 2013 18:44 (ten years ago) link

I guess you'd have to ask Fastnbulbous. I've carelessly gone overboard when trying to land a burn on someone before, so I just assumed that's what he'd done. I'd like to think he knows all women are real women.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 2 December 2013 18:45 (ten years ago) link

I don't really want to talk about it, those were just the questions running through my mind. I would rather talk about Year-End Critics' polls 2013 tbh! That's why it came as a surprise disappointment.

sweat pea (La Lechera), Monday, 2 December 2013 18:48 (ten years ago) link

Fair.

Is anyone publishing singles/tracks lists yet? Albums are boring.

the songs i actually know/like aren't written up v well on the popmatters list. like come on, as if any of the things mentioned in the "merry go round" writeup is what makes the song good.

Really enjoying this. I even kinda like the two Chris Brown things!

a fifth of misty beethoven (cryptosicko), Monday, 2 December 2013 20:41 (ten years ago) link

Good grief, I came back from the dentist, had no idea I'd caused such outrage. Apologies if you think that's sexist, that was not my intention. I should have worded it more neutrally, like "more mature person of substance." I watch FUSE News, perhaps out of nostalgia for the old days of music-related MTV news, but Alexa Chung just seems horrible. She's almost always grating, with her attempts at snark and sarcasm making her sound like she's all of 16 years old. Not to say all ex-fashion models don't have something to offer as TV hosts/broadcast journalists. Liz Walaszczyk and Matte Babel are also pretty faces who may also be ex-models for all I know, but are less annoying in the context of the show. Maybe Chung is a lovely person off camera and will grow into her role on the show. Jack Osbourne has become quite charming and likable on the show too.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 2 December 2013 20:52 (ten years ago) link

Jack Osbourne has a job? I clearly never see Fuse.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 2 December 2013 21:16 (ten years ago) link

i don't even know what fuse is or what show you're talking about!
generally speaking, i wish people would say "mature person of substance." instead of using easily misinterpreted shorthand like "real ______"
i also don't think it's worthwhile to make generalizations about anyone, so i'm glad you cleared that up fnb.

sweat pea (La Lechera), Monday, 2 December 2013 21:22 (ten years ago) link

Thanks. Ironically, it's my wife who really hates Chung to the point where I'm not allowed to watch FUSE news when she's in the room! Speaking of generalizations, J0rdan "manically obsessive cataloger of rock music" S. can f-off.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 2 December 2013 21:38 (ten years ago) link

These lists are honestly my favorite part of the music crit year. What sucks is that right after they're published I learn about doper noise that dropped the same year.

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 2 December 2013 22:31 (ten years ago) link

Jeez, I have really not been keeping up with the albums this year...only familiar with the last three on your list there. So much noise, so little time.
