It's weird, it just falls totally flat for me, I feel like that Dixon and Ame Boiler Room kind of took this sound as far as I'd want it to go.

Am on a long few weeks of p much only listening to Tim Hecker, Deaf Centre, and other stuff along those lines, cos they help me to do some writing work I've got on the go, so it may be bad timing for me.

I was only so-so about the album in the end too tho.

There is one track near the end I liked as well as Old Song, had heard it before, it's the DJ Samo one.

Old Song is all-time tho.

I particularly like the way he mixes the Young Marco remix of "Heterotopia" into "We Doubt (You Can Make It)". It's the kind of two-totally-different-songs-become-one trick that Villalobos used to pull off on the rare occasions when he felt like being gregarious.

The Dixon and Ame Boiler Room is a good reference point for this, but it has some of the "let's build a soundworld" portentous swirliness that I associate with the Wighnomy Bros' Metawuffmischfelge and Mayer's Immer 2.

i'd guess its eyerolls are probably much like when a daaaaark outlier spin-off of a beloved genre of mine gets hipster kisses out of the blue

Your night bus comment would appear to support this.

ya this mix bored the hell out ofm e

flopson, Thursday, 28 November 2013 18:38 (ten years ago) link

i quite liked it

the late great, Thursday, 28 November 2013 18:38 (ten years ago) link

Haha Matt I've probably written that exact line before.

rtc of course correct about Wonderland09 but that's one of the finest mixes of my or any lifetime, so.

Tim F, Thursday, 28 November 2013 19:09 (ten years ago) link

i'm sure i'm just being awfully gauche but i really am finding it hard to fathom how you can listen to this in its entirety and pick out 'old song' (or the deployment of) as a particular highlight above all others... just seems like taking the mix on terms that arent its own

he kinda clangs the mix into it as well imo tbh, although being jarred isn't necessarily bad here

WONDERLAND09

??

Have only heard this mix maybe half a dozen times and have really enjoyed it every time, although it tends to wash over me in one go - although the dixon/ame boiler room did that for a while too before crystalising, so I imagine this will too.

toby, Thursday, 28 November 2013 20:35 (ten years ago) link

(this mix = talabot)

toby, Thursday, 28 November 2013 20:35 (ten years ago) link

ah ok wonderland09 is presumably a ref to this:

funky house sceptics, let me draw your attention to this

anyone have a link?

toby, Thursday, 28 November 2013 20:38 (ten years ago) link

I've still got Wonderland09 knocking around somewhere, will upload it at the weekend.

I thought he kind of clanged the Old Song transition as well but then I realised I was listening on Spotify and there was a track left out just before that. (WTF is up with that btw?)

Almost entirely cos it's a few years old, I have it on vinyl in my parent's house, used to play it out a lot, and it was on a Superpitcher mix years ago, so all your points are fair!

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Thursday, 28 November 2013 23:03 (ten years ago) link

i think the segue from the Untitled track into Round - Glass (kind of a google proofed-who is this guy?) works really well too. also all the comparisons to the Dixon/Ame Boiler set from last year are otm, didn't make that connection myself but it fits.

I feel like the arrival of "Glass" is the actual "ascend into soothing house classicism" moment that everyone describes the arrival of "Old Song" as being - like, if you didn't know the latter already and then read reviews, when "Glass" starts up you'd think "oh this must be that Old Song track".

Separately, Mohr must feel like his title for "Old Song" becomes more and more appropos every day.

Tim F, Friday, 29 November 2013 01:51 (ten years ago) link

It was fitting even when it came out, and not cos it's like retro in a dance way, it just kinda sounds old in a different way.

same, sounding very good in the heat

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 18:04 (six years ago) link

I'm a bit nonplussed by it myself to be honest. It lacks the euphoria and sunshine of Talabot's solo work and the personality of Boman and all the Studio Barnhus axis.

i mean i admit i was pretty high when it was finally opening itself up to me but yeah there's def not much in the way of direct sunlight

yeah, this passed me by. need to check it. i listened to FIN an absolutely obscene amount.

four weeks pass...

Samsa is my jam and far and away the best thing on this. I appreciate what they're going for here, but sometimes the melodic ideas run their course pretty quick for me and it feels weird. For the most part this is a killer summer record though and is very good as a companion to movement.

Unchanging Window (Ross), Thursday, 6 July 2017 01:35 (six years ago) link

*feels weird cuz this is a deep house record and not sure why I care about whether a melody has changed after 7 minutes

Definitely into checking out the Shy Layers live set. Haven't heard of the other two but thanks for the tips.

Jex Opolis is great. Check out last year's Ravines album.

And Eddie Ruscha has released lots of great albums as Secret Circuit and was also half of Laughing Light Of Plenty with Thomas Bullock
