oh god I miss soulseek! OSX CLIENT NOW!

Just follow the instruction in the slsk board and use the nicotine client. It works great!

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:03 (twenty years ago) link

I got my windows laptop working, but I never find the stuff I really want on Soulseek, or else the queue is 1000+ (Opal - Early Recordings, Black Monk Time)

i am sharing the Opal album, it's ripped from an original copy. i am "electricsound" if you wanna add me

Is there a way to install slsk for OSX w/o registering to be an "Apple developer"?

how the hell did I get dragged into this? (or my "minions," so called, or whatever?)

It's free and relatively straight forward. If you have the boxed copy of Jaguar or Panther you probably already have the developer tools.

Ironical thing is blount tried messaging me when I was "away" once

What is this nicotine client?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 20 December 2003 01:56 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I'm interested in more documentation on how to run it on osx, if anyone has any. I tried the web, but cannot find anything of use. Help! I need illegal music badly.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Saturday, 20 December 2003 02:05 (twenty years ago) link

My life depends on the getting of la musique illegale!!!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 20 December 2003 02:29 (twenty years ago) link

Recently I got a message from someone who was all "thank you your music selection is the best and you have great tastes!" or something to that effect. This user was downloading about 12 of my albums at once, which I considered booting him for, but the kiss-up sort of warmed my heart so I decided even's even and I started to download a few of his folders as well.

I was immediately banned.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 20 December 2003 04:42 (twenty years ago) link

@d@m, it's slsk WHICH MACINTOSH CANNOT SUPPORT HAHAHA.

Actually somewhere out there is a Mac version.

Leee Marvin (Leee), Saturday, 20 December 2003 06:14 (twenty years ago) link

Good grief folks, is it THAT freaking difficult to use Google?!

The first result on Googling on "nicotine soulseek" is TA DA "Installing SoulSeek (nicotine 1.0.6) on Mac OS X 10.2 or 10.3"

Or if you have even bothered to look in the Soulseek forums, you'll see TA DA a "Linux/Mac Soulseek" forum.

Yes, you will need to compile some stuff and, yeah, it's a hassle but how badly do you want free music? Plus compiling apps builds character.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 20 December 2003 07:33 (twenty years ago) link

I build mark's slsk by ssh remote access to his computer, I can do the same for you but do you really want to give an internet mentalist the key to your computer with admin privileges. I don't think so. It is not too difficult,

The instructions Elvis posted are pretty good.

HELP ME please. I've gotten everything done to install this Nicotine as far as I can tell. I am stuck at the part where I am supposed to open a program called "X11" which doesn't appear to exist on my computer. There was an x11.pkg in developer tools which I clicked on etc but I dunno what to do at this point. I opened terminal to try to put in the commands there and got "unable to open display" error on it.

I was so psyched too as everything went so smoothly with everything else. There is something called "XDarwin" in the place where "X11" would've been according to instructions but I can't figure out how to use it at all.

Allyzay, Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:02 (twenty years ago) link

Go to the boring computer questions thread Ally and maybe follow what Piuma had to go through. Hopefully you won't have so many troubles.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:05 (twenty years ago) link

By "the commands" that I "put in" "there", I mean this one:

/sw/bin/python2.3 /sw/bin/nicotine

Which is supposed to open the program, but I think I have to type it in this "X11" thing.

xpost i didn't see that thread? I'll search on it. I'm just wondering if "X11" and "XDarwin" are the same thing.

Allyzay, Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:06 (twenty years ago) link

Elvis Telecom knows his sh*t with regards to this.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago) link

Got it to work

Uh how do I actually download anything now?

Allyzay, Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:29 (twenty years ago) link

Anyone find it harder to get fast transfers with slsk than napster?

788, Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago) link

Ally: click on the 'file search' button up top, type a name and hit return. Wait a bit for results to come back in (black means it's available right now), pick one, it appears in 'Transfers' window.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:00 (twenty years ago) link

Also woohoo new computer + phone extension cable from two moves ago = first sweet sweet file theft in 2.5 years last night!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:01 (twenty years ago) link

I've been SoulSeek Classic on os 9 quite a bit lately. It works better then I originally gave it credit for, especially for the less popular stuff.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

you have to connect, Ally. Which is under the "file" menu. Also, I think the default server in nicotine is wrong so you have to type something else in there (server.slsk.org:2240 instead of mail.slsk, which is what was in there when I installed it).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

haha yes akm's advice is probably a good idea as well.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago) link

It's fucked for me.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:03 (twenty years ago) link

what happened?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:06 (twenty years ago) link

No no I was connected and doing searches fine, I couldn't figure out how to actually select a track and download it. Apparently I have to highlight it, option-click it, hold down option-click, scroll down to "Download File(s)" and then it will download files. Which seems really awkward and retarded to me but I got used to it pretty quickly. I know on the PC I was able to just highlight and hit enter, and on Kazaa it is supa eazy. Apparently no one is interested in trading files with Mac users or something, judging by how complicated and stupid this all was but Elvis is right about the character building and the sense of real accomplishment.

What does it mean that some files are grey and some files are black? My username is Allyzay and I think I left it on so y'all can go steal the entire contents of my computer if you want.

Allyzay, Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:01 (twenty years ago) link

Gray means there's a queue for the file, black means it's open.

Buy privileges, it's well worth the $5 to get bumped to the head of the queue.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:03 (twenty years ago) link

Do you get like more "points" the more people download from you, like Kazaa? I Never really used slsk before because I hated the interface and it wasn't working right on my old computer. I honestly don't quite understand their settings for uploading/downloading.

I'm also having a hard time telling if I'm actually toggled "away" too.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago) link

What does it mean when Nicotine keeps asking you to reset your shared folder at startup? Mine does this, and then just keeps "listening on port 2234", but nothing happens.
