production here is some shitty, knock-off Kid A shit. Absolute torture on headphones.

well it kind of sounds like if goldenheart had been mastered like a tell tale heart

乒乓, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 22:33 (ten years ago) link

i liked that track

some dude, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 22:35 (ten years ago) link

yeah that track hardly seems the jumping off point if you wanna get off the dawn treader... let's wait until the drake collabo

Armor On is such an interesting album, but I prefer LTTP. The production on both of these is so overwhelming. *cries*
I need to give Goldenheart more spins.

i mean, it's worth it if this reformation actually smashes, but it doesn't seem like dawn's going to bring her own ideas to it as such

lex pretend, Thursday, 15 May 2014 10:15 (nine years ago) link

this is great
in an obvious way indeed

But the singer's affinity for fantasy doesn't stem from a book series or its corresponding HBO show. When Richard was a kid, she dissected the artwork of Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, studying his use of gold flakes in the 1901 work "Judith and the Head of Holofernes," based on the Biblical character of Judith. Richard was fascinated by the longing in Judith's gaze, existing underneath her beauty and the regal symbols encapsulating her face.

this is so much better than "blow"

j. winters (josh), Monday, 1 December 2014 08:33 (nine years ago) link

ok i really love this song

r|t|c, Monday, 1 December 2014 13:39 (nine years ago) link

it's really good! i never warmed up to "blow" but she sounds so relaxed here (but not at the expense of the obsessiveness she does so well). love the tropical vibes. the vocal switch-up >>>>

lex pretend, Monday, 1 December 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

the obvious thing finally hit me, peering at this song's nagelish sketch art as the strange melancholy jazz fusion chords exploded into breezy bubble economy "let's be careless and vibe yeah!" utopia - this is most surely a precision rendering of 90s japanese citypop, a such dawn very romance mr sparkles alternate reality

r|t|c, Monday, 1 December 2014 19:06 (nine years ago) link

quite obsessed with it myself can u tell

lol knew i could set my watch to that

it's actually the "what are you afraid of...?" bit with all the whirring behind i find most evocative but i can't pin down of what specifically

r|t|c, Monday, 1 December 2014 19:12 (nine years ago) link

That lil' flute thing is very Gran Turismo running in Demo Mode

Not that they're not otm.

Also getting some late 90s post peak 808 State vibes off this one.

is the next line "i'm dripping dreams in your cup"?? the contrast between the voices reminded me of shakespear's sister for a moment

let's be careless and vibe <3

(think that's what she's singing, if it isn't it should be)

fucking hell this album is just...making my head spin. where the hell is she getting these beats from? i never expected anything like this after the druski split, the DK fiasco etc.

bad news "physical" isn't on it (neither are "judith" or "valkyrie"), good news is that "physical" was a really good indication of what's going on here. the sonix are ridiculous but where goldenheart was heavy, this is so so light

lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 17:40 (nine years ago) link

"swim free" is even more towa tei than "physical"

"adderall / sold" purports to be two songs in one but it's more like seven

we have a shameless equivalent of "faith" here as well

lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 17:41 (nine years ago) link

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 7 January 2015 17:44 (nine years ago) link

bf thought the outro sounded like aphex twin (i've never heard aphex twin so can't confirm or deny)

what the hell is going on with these incredible beats though

lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 17:45 (nine years ago) link

'physical' (and i'd imagine most of the album) was this guy again

https://twitter.com/noisecastleiii/status/539144414854017024
https://soundcloud.com/noisecastleiii/sets/dawn-richard

seems to favour a skewed tinkering (also produced a lot of the jojo agape tape http://www.noisecastleiii.com/#!jojo/c1r8z), idm familiarity quite likely

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 18:35 (nine years ago) link

kinda funny/possibly instructive that if he was going for moroder with 'physical' then a lot of its appeal came from how he got it slightly "off" (hence japanesey pseudosimulacra vibe), presumably unintentionally

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 18:39 (nine years ago) link

;__; I want to hear this soooo bad I always associate DR with the middle of winter

fgti, Wednesday, 7 January 2015 18:45 (nine years ago) link

this record is very weird
