Murat was game I thought - I don't know, I have a lot of love for Hopkins but it's frustrating to me how good he is at getting away with cheating and I felt like Smoger was being pretty "eh, what can you do, it's Bernard" about it. Still I don't feel sad to watch Bernard fight. I like watching a guy even older than me go 12 rounds and still be throwing real punches in the 12th, and he gives some of the best post-fight interviews ever. Dementia pugilistica's is horrible for sure but idk where I'm at in life right now I'm like "you're gonna grow old and die anyway and it's gonna suck, you should do the things you want even if they make the end harder," I know that's not the most rational position (and I don't know Hopkins's financials; it's sad when a guy keeps boxing because he needs the money even though he's too old and he's getting beat up) but...he's winning, he's shoring up an actual place in the history of the sport that remade his life

this is something i have discussed with someone i know who is acquainted with a lot of the major uk boxing people

condlusion something like if you're the sort of person who is amenable to the 'you already have a few million and no parkinsonism yet' line of reasoning you probably won't have the temperament to be a great boxer

david haye an example of a good not remotely great boxer who hasn't got hit that much and would doubtless rather be whoring himself on the after dinner circuit than changing that

I don't think Hopkins should retire for his health, I think he should retire because if he actually fought Stevenson or Kovalev he'd get embarrassed.

didnt see rios-pac but im glad pac won decisively - he needed to. my fantasy is he walks through bradley, jmm and floyd in that order and then retires

that would be so rad but he is very much not the Pac of old. he boxed more than I've ever seen really and he didn't turn on the FINISH HIM style really hardly at all. it was really something watching him continually moving to the right - Rios didn't know how to deal with it because both of them are usually stand-and-swing dudes but it's clear Roach has retooled Pac's style. think Floyd's been successful in his "at all costs, find a way to put Pac off til he's older" strategy

Marcos Maidana beat the hell out of Adrian Broner last night. Knocked him down twice and delivered the most dramatic intentional headbutt I've seen in a while - which Broner earned, imo, he was holding Maidana's arms tight to buy time. On the undercard Soto-Karass couldn't put it together at all against Keith Thurman but Thurman is a truly outstanding fighter in my opinion, there's not a lot of people who'll look like much against him. He hasn't faced anybody of note yet but he's gone through everybody they put in front of him and I think he'd beat Robert Guerrero decisively. However he's the mandatory challenger for Maidana now and I really don't think he's ready for that, Maidana's got a huge arsenal of tools - last night he came in charging, boxed going forward, boxed on the ropes, just looked great. Broner's record isn't exactly littered with big names but I think he's better than his detractors say - still, Maidana exposed that B can't really think under real pressure. Honestly I think after he got knocked down in the second round he never fully recovered, fighters with a "never been knocked down" badge are setting themselves up for failure when the day comes

it's a jorge paez move from way back. paez was an entertaining fighter for sure but he's on nobody's list of greats. when paez did it it was to say "you're clinching too much" though - w/broner it seemed much more in keeping with his pretty dull machismo (leaking of vine of himself having a threesome earlier this week, etc)

broner's young and has a hell of a skill set no doubt but I think tasting the canvas was traumatic for him and having to hear the decision was possibly worse - he wants to be Floyd, but Floyd is dead serious about boxing - most of his hammy shit is just to drive numbers imo. I don't think Broner gets that and I think it'll be a minute before he gets another title shot.

also in this fight some very shitty ref'ing which was why Maidana did the headbutt in the first place - in that situation, where your arms are being held and the ref isn't calling it, the headbutt was exactly the right move. take the point deduction to let the other guy know that if the ref isn't going to make you pay for this I will and I don't give a shit. broner should have had a point docked at least once, pretty questionable ringwork by the ref

Laurence Cole is pretty much the worst ref in America who works big fights

so, Chavez Jr vs. Brian Vera was a pretty good fight - Jr. showed up ready to go, fought really well, landed amazing punches. Vera's game and never went down but can't hit hard enough to take out the Jr who showed up last night. Round 12 was annoying showboating that was wholly unnecessary but 1-11 were nice

i dunno if it's just bradley's demeanor or what, but between rounds he looks totally unresponsive and it's starting to freak me out a little

I didn't buy this fight. just didn't figure it'd be worth the scratch and it sounds like it wasn't. Always glad to hear Pac won, but honestly I think it's time for him to go out on a winning note.

thought that was a shit fight, cracking shot to finish it

idk i thought it was alright in a scrappy, uncertain, tactical way, ko was so good because despite having been mostly outclassed, for the last round or so groves was irritating him and then suddenly that happens

that amir khan interview was strange, possible case of dementia pugilistica outside of the ring maybe

too tactical for my liking - felt they were both too worried about getting hurt/making a mistake

I agreed with Jim Watt that Froch won 4 or the first 5 but much of twitter was calling Watt punchy and saying Groves won 4 rounds idk wtf people were seeing that I missed
