I could totally live without the Meters (and I like lots of New Orleans r&b! They always seemed like funk for jam band fans to me.)

I like Prince fine through 1987 or so; after that, he just gets more annoying to me by the minute (speaking of funk for jam band fans).

And I've never had any use of Juliana Hatfield or Fugazi at all (in fact, if anything, I'd say I actively dislike both of them).

Well, their songs usually just never seemed to me to have SONGS attached, which was the problem, I guess. They always just seemed like clinicians to me, laying down Funky Grooves in a workmanlike fashion I couldn't imagine why anybody particularly cared about (better for sampling, I guess, than for actually listening to.)

(then again, admittely, it's been a while since i tried listening to them. maybe i'd think differently if i listened to them today. but when i've tried before, they seemed way less fun than people said.)

I'm quite surprised by Lex's post. I mean, even I like a bit of Abba, aside from the campier bits (Dancing Queen etc) and "The Visitors" is one of my favourite records that I've ehard in recent times - and I'm as rockist as they come by ILX standards. Queen are good too. How can anyone hate on pop/rock gems like Killer Queen and Don't Stop Me Now?

mixed-gender pop groups - abba, s club, steps - usually come with this blue peter sheen to them which really distracts from any emotional import their lyrics would have in the hands of others; also the men, especially if they sing, tend to be completely superfluous to proceedings. i like songs here and there by all the above groups, but as entities i'm not particularly enthused.

that's a good summary of mixed-gender groups. I fidn I often have a similar problem with mixed-gender duets, particularly on the Gothier side of Metal.
