grantland got a redesign, its pretty bad
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:00 (ten years ago) link
yeah it sucks but i always say that about new designs so we'll see
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:09 (ten years ago) link
yeah i always liked the simplicity of the old design (esp w/ adblocker) but this is understandable, does a better job of promoting all their content or whatever. mainly just relieved they haven't gone to that 'this will look like garbage if you're not reading it on a tablet' design new republic and a bunch of others have adopted.
― balls, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:14 (ten years ago) link
i liked the old design, never had trouble finding anything. it looks more cluttered now.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:15 (ten years ago) link
yeah their old design was more in keeping w recent white space and readability trends, tho they werent really clever or detail oriented enough to fit that much content in there, the new one has tons of content but is a total mess and a definite step backward as far as the evolution of web design, and its got a bunch of really corny lowest common denominator details, especially that sticky top stories box in the margin my god what is this techcrunch, nagl for a publication trying to brand themselves as quality

lets get some of those full width images everyone has nowok cool good idea what if the headline overlapped that in a odd haphazard waygreat and we can add some navigation above that where if youre reading the most recent feature there will be an awkward empty space
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:27 (ten years ago) link
ugh @ all that ugly white space after the article title & summary
― Clay, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:29 (ten years ago) link
oh also you know those side notes that are kind our thing lets just cram em in there lol

― lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:29 (ten years ago) link
o it definitely feels like a step back
xpost jeez thought it was just the splash page or whatever, didn't know they'd fucked up the actual readability of the posts now
― balls, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:31 (ten years ago) link
over 34K ppl follow jacko on twitter. wtf.
― balls, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:33 (ten years ago) link
i don't have that weird overlap with the headline on my comp
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:37 (ten years ago) link
oh n/m i didn't realize it was on the feature page, not the homepage
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:38 (ten years ago) link
are you looking at the article page or the home page ha xp tech support is reading yr mind
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:39 (ten years ago) link
hahaha yeah the article page redesign is horrific
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:40 (ten years ago) link
its like the opposite of what the times did w their redesign, like its fine i guess to try and just cram everything into the home page but the article pages shd be designed to maximize readability otherwise people arent going to like reading yr articles and they wont even know why theyll just not like you

They used to turn into footnotes on tablets and they still do only now no "jump" link to return to the article sure ill scroll up 10k words after I read this one line DJ mbenga joke actually nope
― z-time champion (agent hibachi), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:52 (ten years ago) link
the whole thing is just so dumb, do not have notes of any kind unless you have a ton of sources to site its v annoying and pointless
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:57 (ten years ago) link
obvs its not hard to imagine simmons brainstorming ways to fit more inane asides into his writing
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:58 (ten years ago) link
i don't read much grantland other than simmons or lowe but lowe could really do without the footnotes anyway, actually he should basically stick to x's and o's i basically hate every opinion he has
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 January 2014 04:38 (ten years ago) link
that basically how i break it down to an extent
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 January 2014 04:39 (ten years ago) link
hate the footnotes because they don't work in my offline reading app where i pretend i am going to read things later
― Clay, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 04:41 (ten years ago) link
'it hurts so much that we failed [our asshole writer]'
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 01:10 (ten years ago) link
people said mean things to him on the tweets

Grantland looks like a 1999 website now
― 龜, Friday, 24 January 2014 06:08 (ten years ago) link
yeah major step back
― Spottie, Friday, 24 January 2014 06:18 (ten years ago) link
its bad
― puple prijan (lag∞n), Friday, 24 January 2014 15:02 (ten years ago) link
yeah the entire aesthetic of this is terrible, and not in a "way different but you'll get used to it" kind of way
― frogbs, Friday, 24 January 2014 15:10 (ten years ago) link
its designed to cram as much stuff as possible in there w any concern for the reading experience or visual hierarchy or anything, and it does look very specifically dated for sure
― puple prijan (lag∞n), Friday, 24 January 2014 15:14 (ten years ago) link
"content everywhere" is such a bad design but I guess the intent is to get the most clicks-on-page so whatever works I guess
― frogbs, Friday, 24 January 2014 15:16 (ten years ago) link
clicks on clicks on clicks
― puple prijan (lag∞n), Friday, 24 January 2014 15:17 (ten years ago) link
wonder if grantland wasnt doing as well as espn wouldve liked and they forced this design on them cause iirc simmons explained a lil bit of the original design and he seemed to understand re user experience and readability, which i think most writers do
― puple prijan (lag∞n), Friday, 24 January 2014 15:19 (ten years ago) link
but even if youre determined to cram all the clicks in there this is just really poor execution, like look at buzzfeed they have tons of shit everywhere but its way more user friendly than this
― puple prijan (lag∞n), Friday, 24 January 2014 15:20 (ten years ago) link
i will not look at buzzfeed
― k3vin k., Friday, 24 January 2014 15:28 (ten years ago) link
you know youre a 90s kid when you wont look at buzzfeed
― puple prijan (lag∞n), Friday, 24 January 2014 15:31 (ten years ago) link
I really liked the old site, one of my favorites on the whole internetz
― Spottie, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:26 (ten years ago) link
the old site was good from a readability pov but imo but kinda lacked attention to detail otherwise, obvs the whole olde timey aesthetic is total garbage too but w/e
― puple prijan (lag∞n), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:28 (ten years ago) link
yeah v readable
― Spottie, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:36 (ten years ago) link
oh wow theyre showing preload ads now too
― puple prijan (lag∞n), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:36 (ten years ago) link
the hipster design aesthetic was trendy yeah but the articles just read so nicely
― Spottie, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:37 (ten years ago) link
ya thats by far the most important thing
― puple prijan (lag∞n), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:38 (ten years ago) link
that and ease of navigation
and fast loading
― puple prijan (lag∞n), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:39 (ten years ago) link
I hate sidebar footnotes but yeah I liked the old design a lot
― frogbs, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:42 (ten years ago) link
i thought the old design was awesome, very readable who cares about the rest
― k3vin k., Friday, 24 January 2014 17:01 (ten years ago) link
it couldve been even more cooler and you wouldve liked it
― puple prijan (lag∞n), Friday, 24 January 2014 17:06 (ten years ago) link
