OMG! Neko! So crazy!

quincie, Saturday, 12 October 2013 18:33 (ten years ago) link

Got a strict no getting on beds policy with Max which is a shame but ultimately unavoidable(the only way I can be sure he wont pee on them, don't know why he still does this), was told Huskies can be very obstinate when it comes to beds if they develop attachments to them so that makes sense.

tsrobodo, Saturday, 12 October 2013 19:23 (ten years ago) link

yeah she has a weird relationship to beds - before we brought her home, when we would spend weekends with her, we once brought her back to our old place and she was totally chill till she saw the bed then she went NUTS. it was the first time and it totally freaked me out!!

now i know it's playful dominance (her tail always wags but there's def a vibe of "look who's boss" going on). we have a night time routine where she is led in quietly at bedtime and she goes straight to her own bed, and never tries to get in with us during the night, but once she knows we're awake in the morning...

Oh man, there was this (or what appeared to be) a big adult/tiny puppy Bernese Mountain Dog duo I saw today. I nearly melted.

OMG!!! <3

get thee to a local obedience course, like sirius or something. that's about the extent of what i know to do with puppies.

*warning: i'm going to talk about poop a lot*

yeah, the training process has been a rollercoaster. we got her about 3 weeks ago from a shelter, so she's not housetrained. we weren't able to take her outside for the first week that we had her because she hadn't had all of her vaccinations, but she was really good at using the puppy pads. i was amazed at how quickly she picked it up - only a few accidents elsewhere in the apartment. the transition to going outside started with some promise. within 2 days she was taking a piss outside within a few minutes of going outside, and on the 3rd day - similar in spiritual power to jesus being resurrected - she took a giant dump outside. i was so proud. she was still using the puppy pads in the apartment, but generally the trend was in the right direction.

then this week happened. she just stopped refusing to piss or shit outside. i would take her back in within 10 minutes, assuming that she didn't have to go, and then as soon as she got inside she'd go on the pad. grrrrrrr. OR, especially when i knew she had to go, i would wait fucking forever, like 30-40 minutes, for her to go. she would get really feisty and start straining at her leash to run inside, and then finally go when she couldn't wait a second longer. this has been going on all week, getting worse and worse.

i can understand the difficulty of the transition, but i don't get why she was able to get it immediately the first week, and then suddenly reverted back to refusing to go to the bathroom outside. whenever she successfully did it during the first week, we showered with her praise and tons of treats, everything you're supposed to do. i dunno. i guess in the grand scheme of things it's only been a few weeks and i'm sure she'll get it within a few months. but it's really frustrating right now, and plus i wanted to take this opportunity to write a really long post about pooping.

Karl Malone, Friday, 17 October 2014 00:43 (nine years ago) link

Bird is adorable!

About your situation, though--I dunno. I'd always go for positive reinforcement over negative (rubbing her nose in the mess and shouting "What's this?!"), but it sounds like you've done everything you're supposed to re: positive. Like you said, though, she's still new to your family, so give it time.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Friday, 17 October 2014 00:55 (nine years ago) link

re: reinforcement - yeah, we're trying to just do positive and not do the shaming thing too much, although when on occasion she takes a giant piss in the bedroom it's hard not to be like "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS BIRD? ONLY I AM ALLOWED TO PISS ALL OVER MY BEDROOM!!"

i guess one really annoying thing is that we live on the 6th floor and typically use an elevator which takes forever, so "going outside" is typically a really long process as compared to the suburban thing of letting your dog out the back door into your yard or whatever. when you do all of that and then wait outside for 30 minutes and then take her in and she immediately shits on a pad, it's really frustrating.

Karl Malone, Friday, 17 October 2014 00:59 (nine years ago) link

anyway i complain because i'm a complainer and also because she's 99% a perfect pup, so the housetraining journey sticks out. love her so much.

Karl Malone, Friday, 17 October 2014 01:00 (nine years ago) link

eh don't stress about it. neko was 2 yo when we got her and house-trained. never peed in our apartment. then i took her work and she would just pee and shit on the concrete floor. pretty soon i figured out the times she likes to go out (she lets me know now anyway, but when we first got her, she wouldn't). a few months went by, she was all good, then she just decides to start pissing on the floor at work again! it stopped, thankfully. probably just her way of making sure that i know who's really the boss.

and if birdie is going on a pee pad, that's still pretty good. and dog pee is mostly odorless. there is also a spray you can get to encourage them to go while they're outside, but it didn't really work for us (neither did the repellent spray, either).

just1n3, Friday, 17 October 2014 01:17 (nine years ago) link

that makes me feel better. it's hard to be patient sometimes!

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 17 October 2014 02:02 (nine years ago) link

neko likes to do that on the couch and the bed. surprising, both are still in one piece.

and yeah, it just takes a really long time to train. wish tza was still posting here, she's the best and knows lots about dog stuff. we've been pretty lax about really training neko but we taught her 'shake' so that's all that really matters, right??

just1n3, Friday, 17 October 2014 02:40 (nine years ago) link

She's beautiful!
Don't know what the weather's doing in Karl's part of the world, but sometime pups that pick up being house-trained fast have a big lapse if the weather turns cold or wet--they want to be obedient, but not as much as they want to stay warm and dry.

Would bringing the pads with you on your outdoor potty breaks be of use? Caveat: I learned that trick from Bruce Almighty.

aw, is she a husky? a good friend of mine's alaskan husky used to do that!

ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 12 November 2014 00:34 (nine years ago) link

yeah she's a siberian husky (UM HELLO have you not seen the 1001 photos of her on facebook already??). it seriously freaked me the fuck out the first time - especially bc her eyes/inner lids will kinda twitch and roll really fast while she sleeps - she looks demonic in a way that doesn't come across in photos.

just1n3, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 01:03 (nine years ago) link

Having a demon dog might really come in handy sometimes though. If the apocalypse comes you're going to be set

it's grosser when her outer lid is completely open, while her inner lid is closed and she's "looking" right at me. that was the first time i've managed to get a pic bc she normally wakes up before i can.

great photo

7 years isn't really "old man" for a smallish dog, no? more like robust middle age.

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 November 2014 18:02 (nine years ago) link

late middle age, i suppose...

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 November 2014 18:02 (nine years ago) link

also, i found this youtube very moving:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPdijiDJ0dU

the girlfriend is clearly just overwhelmed. the way the puppy struggles to get up into her lap, and then once s/he does just curls into her arms.... aw man.

Xps I still consider her my puppy! And she acts like a baby most of the time.

just1n3, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 19:31 (nine years ago) link

nah well he is a robust middle age man but he is so lanky and porky compared to his early years xp
