So I'm not entirely sure what this is; short songs, not dancefloor focused, often feels lacking in melody, not ambient, not especially beautiful... Some of it is very nice indeed but I'm left feeling a little shortchanged so far.

Are you really that nonplussed by it? It doesn't feel any less dancefloor focussed than, say, a Field or Gold Panda album. In fact that whole middle section - from Kool Aid through to Aerial, feels pretty dancey. Or at least, he's putting house and techno and various post-garage genres through his usual aural hipstamatic filter.
I can understand feeling disappointed if "beauty" is all you go to Four Tet for but this is rhythmically and texturally interesting enough as it is. I'm usually faintly irritated by the doe eyes that Four Tet records usually seem to be pulling, so I'm quite happy with one that makes you work a bit harder.

I'm also underwhelmed. Seems to me the album is a bit of blur until the HEY HEY HEY, which is annoyingly mixed way too loud and ruins Kool FM for me

as someone who finds a lot of his stuff beautiful but bland and a bit too samey/pretty, i like this album a lot. its dancey, but very detailed, structurally, but without it sounding anal. its the sort of thing he does better than i ever imagined he could/would.
