Voyage of the Damned used to get aired on Sat afternoon teevee in the eighties. I've no memory of it except Faye Dunaway's hair; she was done up like a third-rate Hannah Schygulla.

I'll retract what I said about Straight. For being such a small performance it's so damn uneven, in large part because of Chayevsky's high-minded gobbledygook, to quote a poster on StinkyLulu's site. She's best when she laughs and says "You're in for some awful grief, Max."

partly because sassy black women are allowed to win it now, just like 1939? (There was a thinkpiece about the racist implications of this re Oprah in The Butler a few weeks ago)

If the thrust of that article was that Oprah should be considered for Best Actress instead of Supporting, the author's out of their mind.

― surm, Friday, 4 October 2013 05:11 (ten years ago) link
that was not the thrust, Eric -- it was it's "the kind of role" black actresses get attention for.
― eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 October 2013 05:19 (ten years ago) link
Seems to me that article is actually praising Oprah's performance as transcending that stereotype. Clickbait title, et al.

Went through Wikipedia's list of American films for '76, didn't really spot any other obvious possibilities from what I've seen myself. Maybe Tatum O'Neal in The Bad News Bears. I think one of the five best American films that year--most memorable, anyway--was on television: Sybil. So possibly Joanne Woodward, too, although it's pretty much Sally Fields' show.

Guessing Foster logs about 10 minutes? Three scenes--De Niro in the room, De Niro in the diner, and dancing with Keitel--and a bit more. Laurie's role must be the largest by a wide margin.

Stinkylulu (linked above) breaks it down like this for the stats addicts:
Alexander -- 5:40 (2 scenes)Foster -- 15:48 (8 scenes)Grant -- 12:01 (18 scenes)Straight -- 5:13 (3 scenes)Laurie -- 19:07 (10 scenes)
― midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Monday, 14 October 2013 15:23 (ten years ago) link
(The third scene for Straight she's literally sitting in the living room watching TV with Holden and their daughter as Howard Beale gives his "I'm as mad as hell" speech. I think you might see her in profile or with her back to the camera.

On the flip side of Straight/Alexander, I imagine Hailee Steinfeld is near the top of the list for most running time for a supporting actress nominee.
― midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Monday, 14 October 2013 15:45 (ten years ago) link
Olivia de Havilland in Gone with the Wind too, just on the sheer accumulation during that 222-minute running time.

Some guesses for 20-minute+ supporting roles, based on a quick scan of nominees:
Julianne Moore -- Boogie NightsJoan Allen -- NixonLorraine Bracco -- GoodfellasCathy Moriarty -- Raging BullMary Steenburgen -- Melvin and HowardKaren Black -- Five Easy Pieces
All films I love--maybe they just loom large in my own mind. Janet Leigh must be at or near the top of the list in Psycho. (Skipping the special case of Linda Blair.)

I voted Foster, but from the discussion here was expecting Laurie to sweep. The results for the top two being so close (and all but obliterating the other three contenders) feels correct, though.
