tehresa (tehresa), Saturday, 16 April 2005 17:34 (nineteen years ago) link

there are people named "marquis"????

I had two students named "Marquis" last year. And they didn't pronounce it like Marcus.

I also had Quonicus, Royal, Queen, Precious, a couple of LaToyas, hmm any strange names are leaving me now as I really no longer saw them as strange.

My sister-in-law's name is chaka.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:10 (nineteen years ago) link

According to my sister, there is this girl at my former high school who named her baby Shinequa Shinishe Shinene Johnson. I thought that was so cool. Its like the ultimate "fuck you, white people" name.

and before you think i'm a racist / complete asshole (wait u already do...well someee of u _locals_ do), do i actually have to pre-emptively state that i am *not* trying to offend anyone here by giving into generalizations, and that i could just as easily list the most common indian or should i say DESI nicknames (of ppl whose natural habitat is the uni library's computer lab and wear 80s clothes "unironically" ) are stuff like Pinky, Tunku, and Bonny etc that few here would get, as well as those strange attempts at hinglish crossovers, like "Shaun," or "Neal / Neil" or "Jay / Jai" and "Sheila," "Lina," "Nina," and all that?!! k? (and im theoretically just an " ABCD" who's sold out with the englishization of my own nickname by spelling it w/ a C instead of a K on this board anyway, so i have no cred here)

oh, and i have problems buying that black female list. where is

Taneesha
Lakeesha
Chaunte / Shawn-tae (i've worked w/ like 3)
Shantiqua
etc ? i've known so so many

i thought i was the only one to observe that all indian boys are named neil and vic!

Its because our parents are image-conscious sell-outs. I'd rather have been a Neil though...Neil is at least sexXxy

Vic in Alderaan (Vic), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 10:22 (eighteen years ago) link

i think maybe a lot of the asians (esp. koreans) who give their children anglo-esque names (on birth or later) are also very often quite religious, so they are names associated with either religious texts or religious leaders.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I saw a little kid and someone who was either a parent or a nanny, and she was urging the little kid to "Hurry up Schlomo!" and asking him "how was school, sclomo?"

i was taken aback.
