fortunately i don't know what a FB macro is

not bad, but typical Conan derail; nothin good comedically can ever come from a Springsteen riff

i tend to think that

a) it doesn't matter if louis ck actually is wedded to his iphone or not

b) it doesn't matter where he took stuff from if he builds satisfyingly on it

i mean he's a performer, and a great one, do you really care if in his personal life lines up precisely with his routines?

yeah it's kinda like "HEY THAT BIT ABOUT HIM BEING ON AN AIRPLANE YESTERDAY WAS PATENTLY FALSE, I SAW HIM ON ANOTHER L.A.-BASED TALK SHOW THREE DAYS PRIOR"

Jean-Claude Brand Ambassador (some dude), Saturday, 21 September 2013 16:20 (ten years ago) link

right but i think that by contrast with other comics people tend to treat ck as if he's actually using his routine to express beliefs he feels strongly about and wants other people to hold. whereas in fact he's just trying to say stuff that's funny, as far as i can tell. e.g. i'm sure lots of comics are actually totally fine with airplane food! but that shouldn't stop you from making fun of it in public if you can make it funny.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 21 September 2013 16:27 (ten years ago) link

he probably DOES feel strongly about it!

i feel strongly that I should get off my butt and exercise but does that mean I'm doing a 2k run this morning?

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Saturday, 21 September 2013 16:43 (ten years ago) link

I think people tend to forget that half of what Louis says is about how much of an idiot he is himself. I do believe he wants people to think about what he is saying, but everything should be taken with a grain of salt.

Frederik B, Saturday, 21 September 2013 16:44 (ten years ago) link

i don't think anybody is totally fine with airplane food

Loving season 3. Those kids are amazing actors. And love the Community Bookstore.

just finished it last night, loved it but man are the female characters even more messed up than usual. the ex-wife character is the only one who acts like a human.

Oh, I've definitely met variants of the Parker Posey character. But the Sevigny character may have been a bridge too far.

Simon H., Monday, 7 October 2013 16:46 (ten years ago) link

yeah agreed that was a little much and made me look back on the other women (delores, parker posey, maria bamford) in the season.

btw i died laughing every time louie's manager stared blankly or the camera revealed that he had been sitting quietly in the room for a whole scene.

Funny how about a third of the stories felt somehow conventional/familiar (though really funny)--especially the bratty kid, the Melissa Leo date--versus a whole other original genre.

I've said it before, but I really like how starting a Louie episode is a lot like reading a new short story by a favorite writer--no clue as to whether it's going to be epic or intimate, light or dark, rather than just comedy or drama.

oh yeah, forgot about melissa leo!

And if i've not OTM'd you before, I am OTMing you now. OTM!

I loved the reveal about what he does on his day off: smoke weed, get in a taxi and people-watch, and go to an Imax movie.

Hate how my brain is trained to see "2 episodes a week!" translated to "network with little confidence in product is going to burn it off"

This is p much the only-ever exception to that case, if the FX chief is to be believed.

three weeks pass...

watched the pilot episode of Lucky Louie last night. weird sitcom format. also noticed that he's had that matriarchy/first guy to punch his mom bit that he did on SNL last week for quite some time.

tonight at 10pm 2 new episodes of LOUIE on FX. I hope you like to look at and listen to them.

j., Monday, 5 May 2014 17:18 (nine years ago) link

I took a year off between last season and this one, mostly so I could have more time to do the show, to make it better. This season is very different from past seasons. The first three episodes are pretty typical of what we've done in the past, Self-contained stories. But the next 6 episodes after that are all connected in one story. Then we have a three part story and a two part story. So lots of… parts stories. Yeah.

I am pretty excited!

haha 'parts stories'

like 'chapter books'

the scene with the garbage men really fuckin' nailed it, that was every Tuesday at my last apartment

frogbs, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 04:47 (nine years ago) link

I admit that if I was gonna guess this season's guest stars, Charles Grodin and Yvonne Strahovski would not have been my first picks.

Simon H., Tuesday, 6 May 2014 08:07 (nine years ago) link

had a nightmare about paying a rich man 5k a month for the rest of my life. maybe not quite that detailed but that was certainly the gist.
louis is good at hitting those terror spots; the doughnut store bully still engages fight/flight when i watch it.
