lag∞n, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 16:50 (ten years ago) link

oh thank god i thought I somehow changed some preference and couldn't figure out how to fix it. Mine is back to interactions now.

For anyone who's interested: I have now created my Twitter account. It can be found at https://twitter.com/AmCuriousNJ and @AmCuriousNJ is my Twitter handle. My first two tweets were about two nonprofit organizations I support (one is for animal welfare, the other one is for humans, animals, and the environment). These two organizations have FREE ways for people to help the less fortunate (whether the less fortunate are humans or non-human animals, or even if one considers the environment a 'less fortunate entity'). And my profile image is that of a female specimen of the official New Jersey State Bird, the American Goldfinch bird. I think that's fitting because I'm someone who's interested in animal welfare, I'm from New Jersey, and the bird fits in with Twitter's overall avian theme. For reasons of privacy, I probably won’t use my real, actual name and image until if/when I decide that I actually like Twitter, and if/when I decide that I’m actually having a good experience being on Twitter.

I will probably also tweet about some music that I like, such as Nico (especially from The Marble Index through to Fata Morgana), Stereolab, and Jason Falkner. There's also an investigative journalism publication that I subscribe to that I will probably tweet about from time to time. And, of course, I will probably get caught up in the general 'Twitter Wackiness' that seems to occur on Twitter. So, there's that.

So, if you know of anyone who is interested in any of these topics, feel free to suggest they have a look at my Twitter account. Anyone who wishes to re-tweet my tweets is free to do so. I think I will be tweeting at least several times per week but, I hope to tweet at least once per day.

Anyone who wishes to follow me is free to do so. I will follow you back.

Thanks go to Treeship for following me, as well as for re-tweeting my tweet about The Animal Rescue Site. And of course, I follow Treeship on Twitter.

adios twitter account. just more and more ads every day. and then I looked at my profile and saw that it had filled in all this bullshit info about me: "pizza expert. Giants fan. parent" wtf only the last one of those is accurate.

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:39 (ten years ago) link

wait, it did what??

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:41 (ten years ago) link

?!?!

Agree that the adverts are getting annoying, though.

emil.y, Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:41 (ten years ago) link

the two biggest problems i have with the ads are (1) that they're not demarcated clearly enough, so I don't know they're ads until I've already read them; (2) they're frequently for companies i wouldn't piss on, so i have go to out of my way to block them

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:43 (ten years ago) link

I went to "edit profile" and it had a bunch of text under my picture, which I assume showed up if someone else viewed my profile. none of which I had entered myself. I would certainly never call myself a fan of any professional sporting team.

and yeah I don't need to see ads from fucking Taco Bell and American Express or whatever, blocking had no effect. but hey they're going public soon! IPO cash for everyone!

fuck the internet

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:45 (ten years ago) link

I have never heard of that happening. Maybe you got hacked? Or maybe it was a suggested placeholder that you unwittingly accepted? That's what almost every bot's profile description looks like.

polyphonic, Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:48 (ten years ago) link

I dunno why anyone would bother hacking my account. it clearly had things in there that were extrapolated from actual data about me (ie, I live in SF, must be a Giants fan! I posted about pizza at some point, must be a pizza expert! I have mentioned my band, which has the word "rockets" in it, I must build rockets for a living!) just dumb shit I would never write

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:51 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, almost all of the real spambots I've seen have that format: "Bacon lover. Moustache enthusiast. Unicyclist."

emil.y, Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:51 (ten years ago) link

And most hacks are just opportunist hacks that take any account, not b/c you're anyone important. Not saying you're not important.

emil.y, Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:53 (ten years ago) link

and yeah I don't need to see ads from fucking Taco Bell and American Express or whatever, blocking had no effect.

it is doubleplusannoying that accounts i block keep showing up as follow suggestions

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:53 (ten years ago) link

"Bacon lover. Moustache enthusiast. Unicyclist."

i would follow this account

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:54 (ten years ago) link

And most hacks are just opportunist hacks that take any account, not b/c you're anyone important. Not saying you're not important

right. I dunno, I figure if the account was hacked and people were getting spam from me I would've heard about it, but who knows. at any rate I just deactivated it, they have officially reached friendster status in the usefulness dept imho

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:59 (ten years ago) link

hey shakey, it's not hacked i don't think. i just went to edit my profile and it said the exact same description. i think it's just randomly generated.

Mordy , Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:06 (ten years ago) link

more like randumbly generated

JEFF 22 (Matt P), Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:07 (ten years ago) link

well whatever, I don't like having random marketing demographics affixed to my identity so they can fuck right off with that shit and advertize their shitty products to someone else

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:11 (ten years ago) link

glad i never got twitter, facebook is all the social media idiocracy i need. i look forward to the day it's basically a wasteland and the resulting content 77 posts.

JEFF 22 (Matt P), Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:13 (ten years ago) link

shakey, how are you accessing it? i can't bring up anything like what mordy described in desktop browser or on ios.

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:14 (ten years ago) link

I feel like the amount of ads is pretty reasonable for a website that has no other ads and is free, and the ads are far less eerie and annoying as those I see on Facebook or Amazon or other sites that use your browsing history in a more brazen manner. And I still enjoy the heck out of the site ... I keep finding cool new people to follow.

polyphonic, Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:18 (ten years ago) link

idg why you people are not using third party apps (unless you're windows users)

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:19 (ten years ago) link

well I'm not on facebook either. Amazon is kind of a different deal, I kind of expect to be advertised at while I'm buying stuff

yeah I use Windows. I'm at work!

wow that is the same wtf

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:26 (ten years ago) link

I have a strong recollection that after one of the redesigns they tried to get people to add bio to their profile, and I think it had boilerplate info in it that you could replace or delete if you wanted to. Very easy thing to accidentally approve.

polyphonic, Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:28 (ten years ago) link

it's just weird that 3 out of the 4 things in that boilerplate are related to my actual life

*puts on tinfoil hat*

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:30 (ten years ago) link

That looks like a suggestion for the 'about' field, not something that others would see?

emil.y, Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:32 (ten years ago) link

yes i think emil.y is correct. i don't think it was approved - just a suggestion

Mordy , Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:33 (ten years ago) link

Just going from it being greyed out, really. But I checked too, and Mordy has nothing like that written on his page. xp

emil.y, Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:33 (ten years ago) link

Maybe you should try getting into the Giants.

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:35 (ten years ago) link

or pizza

mookieproof, Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:36 (ten years ago) link

I wonder if they use the Giants because there are two popular pro sports teams with that name and it boosts their chances of being right (more so than if they used the Cardinals even).

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:36 (ten years ago) link

yeah, grey text indicates it's an instruction/suggestion, and i'm not seeing it because i already have a bio

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:44 (ten years ago) link

Yeah it's the same for me, it doesn't get shown to anyone

badg, Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:57 (ten years ago) link

u guys shd make some cool bios for yr twitter page

☪☮⚤✡i☯✞ (lag∞n), Friday, 27 September 2013 00:13 (ten years ago) link

I mainly use my Twitter to make dumb jokes. I would like to keep using it for that purpose but also for some professional networking too. Should I: just use my current Twitter but maybe go through and delete the rare profane joke, delete my current account and just deal with starting over from scratch, or not use Twitter for professional networking?

Immediate Follower (NA), Monday, 30 September 2013 17:15 (ten years ago) link

I wish I could have multiple accounts under the same email.

Immediate Follower (NA), Monday, 30 September 2013 17:16 (ten years ago) link

a small trick for that is registering two accounts to a gmail address with one as @gmail.com and one as @googlemail.com.

opie dead eyed piece of shit (Merdeyeux), Monday, 30 September 2013 17:21 (ten years ago) link

Eh it's too much of a pain in the ass to bother with separate accounts. I see there are sites that will automatically delete all your tweets before a certain date. I could do that and then reconfigure with a limited history.

Immediate Follower (NA), Monday, 30 September 2013 17:28 (ten years ago) link

not sure what industry youre in but def in journalism and tech it doesnt seem to hurt peoples carers at all to be silly on twitter

lag∞n, Monday, 30 September 2013 17:31 (ten years ago) link

i feel like it maybe works to find the people/situations that youd vibe to on a personal level to be more yourself

lag∞n, Monday, 30 September 2013 17:32 (ten years ago) link

Yeah. I'm more concerned about current boss/coworkers finding me and seeing how I spend my workday. Probably just paranoia.
