I totally won a coke mirror at the state fair in 1985 but for the life of me I can't remember what it was. I passed up the opportunity to buy a purple rain one this summer for $5 which is a sign of something I guess. I also never new what they were for until the beastie boys line, but always knew them as roach clips and had no idea what they had to do with bugs.

Surely somebody has by now made the tuxedo t-shirt version of a battle jacket, right?

joygoat, Sunday, 15 September 2013 06:19 (ten years ago) link

I won a roach clip at my school carnival in 1st grade. Around the same time I got a Transformers coke mirror from the county fair or something.

Love the battle jacket upthread with S.O.D., Pantera, and Skynyrd. Pretty sure that's all I need to know about that dude.

To answer q from way upthread, no I don't have one of these. But they are still v popular at punk gigs in London, and not just the oldsters.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 15 September 2013 11:51 (ten years ago) link

I thought they might be.

the run dmc fan is clearly not sure re the band as its only pinned on ...

mark e, Sunday, 15 September 2013 14:35 (ten years ago) link

well, or they are also a fan of punk rock, where safety pins are pretty cool.

would like to see a bit more detail as to how he pinned that run dmc patch on, cos that's some seriously impressive action.

I'm going to try and get my sister to send me picture of hers. Had Nausea, Crass, UK Subs, Subhumans and a massive odd one out but I can't remember what it was.

that patch is too new (and looks like a cheap knockoff) and her jacket is ugh quilted, I am giving her low marks for that

I like the ones where the patches are collaged without much visible denim rather than evenly spaced ~just so~ bcz even though I'm usually all about symmetry they kinda scream OCD to me

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 16 September 2013 00:27 (ten years ago) link

plus, they are really easy to sell and ship.

scott seward, Monday, 16 September 2013 00:45 (ten years ago) link

bad enough that they even HAVE a britny fox patch but featuring it on the back? jeeeezus

I have two of these, but I always called them "crust vests", not Battle Jackets- maybe that's just me? I dunno.

Here's the front of the first one; you can see the Disrupt and HellHammer patches but not the Cremaster patch

http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b636/DrDrewDaniel/DisruptCrustVestFront_zps3b87d582.jpg

and here's the back of that one, with a Merzbow back patch and a C.B.T. bumflap thingie:

the tune was space, Monday, 16 September 2013 02:17 (ten years ago) link

my second one is simpler, just a "charged" field of spikes with a Matmos patch (patch was custom made for me by a street vendor in Nepal!):

http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b636/DrDrewDaniel/MatmosCrustVest_zps66291f6a.jpg

and here I am wearing it (shades of wdyll):

I guess being a 42 year old professor who dresses like this is kinda lolzy and weekend warrior-ish but whatever

the tune was space, Monday, 16 September 2013 02:19 (ten years ago) link

I think it works better with a beard and lots of alcohol, preferably in a smelly backstage area
