and by "cool" I probably mean "would be a fun project" because no bald, doughy dude is gonna make that cool

I dont think anyone who wears battle jackets worries about being cool. It's not very metal.

i'm kind of psyched on this idea thank you AG

i expect kids to be stupid, it's always disheartening when you see adults doing it and presumably getting paid for it

SPOT THE ODD PATCH OUT

I wouldn't have said Foo Fighters (though they do suck); what caught my eye was the Mago de Oz patch. They're a weirdo folk-metal band from who've been around for about 25 years.

誤訳侮辱, Saturday, 14 September 2013 17:28 (ten years ago) link

tbf i never heard of them

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 14 September 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

btw from that rnb jacket guys tumblr

t's an exploration of the music industry's relationship with fashion and branding, I intend to raise questions about the power of a brand, what a musician or a band means beyond the context of just their music, what they represent culturally or emotionally to people. When one becomes aware of this power, and re-arranges and recontextualises these symbols, it can open up new meanings and questions.

Music also has the ability to mark personal growth or change, life stages, tastes, subcultures etc. I grew up during the late nineties and early noughites when it was pretty common to just be labeled one thing, punk, goth, homie, etc. depending one what you listened to. Why limit yourself to being so one dimensional?

I also have a vested interest in exposing the hypocrisy of punk, it seems the movement (if you could call it that) was so much about 'Fuck everything, do what you want EXCEPT listen to hip hop EXCEPT go to university EXCEPT get a nine to five job EXCEPT eat meat.' I began to see it as a mini fascist regime, and the negative reactions from music fans on both sides about this project just go to prove this. That was exactly my intention."

Foo Fighters wouldn't be the odd ones out with Audioslave and RHCP on that jacket as well, to me.

emil.y, Saturday, 14 September 2013 17:39 (ten years ago) link

well I never noticed audioslave but my thinking was more along the lines of rhcp were around in the 80s and metal fans liked them whereas FF were more a younger alt crowds band. but i suppose audioslave ruins that

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 14 September 2013 17:41 (ten years ago) link

i thought the odd one out was bon soddin' jovi.

Interesting (but not surprising?) that the rap/rnb crowd criticised it too.
I knew a ton of people in the 90s who loved metal and rap. Did nu-metal kill all the goodwill on both sides?

US ilxors like sean and rocky were as much into rap as metal.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 14 September 2013 17:44 (ten years ago) link

Ahh the guy who did the rnb jacket/vest is from Australia

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 14 September 2013 17:47 (ten years ago) link

When did punk -> straight-edge happen? Going off the 'except eat meat' thing from that guy. I guess Crass were vegan/vegetarian, but was it a UK thing or transported from US hardcore?

Did that start the trend for abstinence or reflect/name an already-existing trend, though?

xp ah, right you are

emil.y, Saturday, 14 September 2013 18:00 (ten years ago) link

Did you guys have those coke mirrors with metal album covers in the UK?

My Little Pono (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 14 September 2013 18:04 (ten years ago) link

emil.y does brighton have a sXe scene still?

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 14 September 2013 18:04 (ten years ago) link

When I say "still" I dunno if there was a big sXe scene there but it seems the kind of place that would

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 14 September 2013 18:05 (ten years ago) link

I guess I consider 'hardcore' as a different genre to 'punk' so it seemed weird him talking about vegetarianism in the hypocrisy of punk. But maybe that's just the narcissism of small differences.

xxxp

AG - I wouldn't know about that sort of thing, hahahaha. There are punks of several stripes, though.

emil.y, Saturday, 14 September 2013 18:05 (ten years ago) link

Late 80s everyone liked metal & rap

My Little Pono (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 14 September 2013 18:07 (ten years ago) link

don't think I'd quite go that far, in the UK anyway. thrash metal fans did seem to be open to it thanks to Anthrax/Public Enemy/Beastie Boys/Slayer.
