Is that Chris Brown? Don't let Alex In NYC see that!

He pops up occasionally. I'm sure he knows about those pics.

I used to see loads of these battle jackets with Public Enemy patches alongside Anthrax/Slayer/Megadeth etc I keep forgetting how much Public Enemy crossed over to the metal crowd

The Chris Brown pic ... while roundly indefensible ... is indeed ancient history. I already addressed it back in November of 2012.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 13 September 2013 19:02 (ten years ago) link

ahhh .. say his name 5 times ...

mark e, Friday, 13 September 2013 19:06 (ten years ago) link

Told ya!

EZ Snappin, Friday, 13 September 2013 19:07 (ten years ago) link

But did he have a battle jacket with a Killing Joke patch?

skillz.

how many of these were done by the mums ..

(and yes, i know there is a chance that the dads may have done them, but you just know they were done by the mums .. )

mark e, Friday, 13 September 2013 19:58 (ten years ago) link

nah what else do you think they did during the home economics lessons they forced on us first two years of high school

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:05 (ten years ago) link

that last one is very organized

My Little Pono (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:06 (ten years ago) link

exactly upper mississippi ..

a hormonal spotty 16 year old would never have arranged them like that.

My Little Pono (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:14 (ten years ago) link

well most battle jackets i see now are guys older than i am. and im pretty sure the great majority of jackets were bought from someone else. Im damn sure a lot of ppl wore patches by bands he'd never heard (my old mate from school had one he wore to donington in the 90s and he had only heard the black album by metallica nevermind the other patches on it

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:15 (ten years ago) link

That last one looks like the patches were all sewn on at the same time, i.e. a poser's jacket

Addison Doug (Matt #2), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:20 (ten years ago) link

I was told (by someone that knew them well) that a slightly renowned retro-rock band of a few years ago actually paid someone £600-odd to make up patch denims for them.

Addison Doug (Matt #2), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:22 (ten years ago) link

do they not have punx in UK?

My Little Pono (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:22 (ten years ago) link

2 jackets actually, £600 each

Addison Doug (Matt #2), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:22 (ten years ago) link

i want to be very clear here. that Saxon jacket is. fucking. mint.

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:23 (ten years ago) link

s'pose i shd confess i'm not a big fan of punker leathers tbh, unless it is 1983 and you are in the Anti-Nowhere League

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 September 2013 20:24 (ten years ago) link

Again i used to see punks with discharge/gbh/crass leathers but not for ages (unless im in glasgow shopping)

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 13 September 2013 21:00 (ten years ago) link

Another patch always on jackets round here early 90s was Hawkwind.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 13 September 2013 21:50 (ten years ago) link

There's a bit in Whiney's Nation of Millions book saying that Chuck D and Hank Shocklee admired the way Megadeth and Maiden gave their album covers an identity by using the same logo/font every time, and how PE did the same.

where did people get hold of metal patches? Places like Affleck's Palace I guess, but also mail order? I seem to remember back pages of Kerrang! would feature mail order ads for them.

Neil S, Saturday, 14 September 2013 09:34 (ten years ago) link

used to be shops/market stalls that wd have big displays of patches for sale back in the 80s

Cap'n Save-a-Co. (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 14 September 2013 09:37 (ten years ago) link

Music t-shirt shops seem to have disappeared in recent years, except in a few places like Camden Market. Thx internet!

Neil S, Saturday, 14 September 2013 09:38 (ten years ago) link

yeah free with albums, record shops (you can get them still in a 2nd hand record shop in Glasgow along with drug paraphernalia and those big band flags you put on yer wall and tshirts ) and yes mail order. Was never into it but had a few nice patches with records over the years.

Too many of these have bright new patches on them - not showing any wear or signs of battle on them. Also, if you don't devote a large part of the back to your favorite band, I think you're doing it wrong.
