Please don't be mistaken that you would be starting a twitter account "for the sake of animals and their welfare", though: you would be starting it for yourself. There isn't any shame in that. Having a place where you can collate the information you want to read about animal welfare, following relevant organisations and retweeting what seems most important to you, is a totally valid way of engaging with an issue that matters to you.

Fair enough. You're probably right. Though, if it wasn't for the animal welfare issues/organizations that I'm involved with, I probably wouldn't even bother with Twitter; as for Twitter itself: I can (take or) leave it; it's the animal welfare issues/organizations that have actually motivated me to look into this thing called Twitter.

I just meant that if it weren't for animal welfare, I wouldn't put up with all the crass nonsense I've come across regarding Twitter, I would have abandoned the idea of creating a Twitter account some time ago. That I still might sign-up with Twitter is mainly because of my concern for animals. I would probably follow/tweet about other stuff as well but that 'other stuff' isn't my main motivation for actually trying to join Twitter.

100% there'll be an animal welfare twitter community just as there is for probably ever imaginable pastime or interest

Yeah. I've also noticed that many people on Twitter no longer answer/pay attention to their email. They expect you to contact them via Twitter. This is probably more of a problem with people in general, than with Twitter, but Twitter is making this (somewhat asocial) behavior easier for such people.

it just sounds like you've made up a story for yourself about what your twitter experience ~might~ be like and using that conjecture to justify your non-participation. just jump in dude, it's not exactly a high-risk proposition

oh thank god i thought I somehow changed some preference and couldn't figure out how to fix it. Mine is back to interactions now.

For anyone who's interested: I have now created my Twitter account. It can be found at https://twitter.com/AmCuriousNJ and @AmCuriousNJ is my Twitter handle. My first two tweets were about two nonprofit organizations I support (one is for animal welfare, the other one is for humans, animals, and the environment). These two organizations have FREE ways for people to help the less fortunate (whether the less fortunate are humans or non-human animals, or even if one considers the environment a 'less fortunate entity'). And my profile image is that of a female specimen of the official New Jersey State Bird, the American Goldfinch bird. I think that's fitting because I'm someone who's interested in animal welfare, I'm from New Jersey, and the bird fits in with Twitter's overall avian theme. For reasons of privacy, I probably won’t use my real, actual name and image until if/when I decide that I actually like Twitter, and if/when I decide that I’m actually having a good experience being on Twitter.

I will probably also tweet about some music that I like, such as Nico (especially from The Marble Index through to Fata Morgana), Stereolab, and Jason Falkner. There's also an investigative journalism publication that I subscribe to that I will probably tweet about from time to time. And, of course, I will probably get caught up in the general 'Twitter Wackiness' that seems to occur on Twitter. So, there's that.

So, if you know of anyone who is interested in any of these topics, feel free to suggest they have a look at my Twitter account. Anyone who wishes to re-tweet my tweets is free to do so. I think I will be tweeting at least several times per week but, I hope to tweet at least once per day.

Agree that the adverts are getting annoying, though.

the two biggest problems i have with the ads are (1) that they're not demarcated clearly enough, so I don't know they're ads until I've already read them; (2) they're frequently for companies i wouldn't piss on, so i have go to out of my way to block them

I went to "edit profile" and it had a bunch of text under my picture, which I assume showed up if someone else viewed my profile. none of which I had entered myself. I would certainly never call myself a fan of any professional sporting team.

and yeah I don't need to see ads from fucking Taco Bell and American Express or whatever, blocking had no effect. but hey they're going public soon! IPO cash for everyone!

I have never heard of that happening. Maybe you got hacked? Or maybe it was a suggested placeholder that you unwittingly accepted? That's what almost every bot's profile description looks like.

I dunno why anyone would bother hacking my account. it clearly had things in there that were extrapolated from actual data about me (ie, I live in SF, must be a Giants fan! I posted about pizza at some point, must be a pizza expert! I have mentioned my band, which has the word "rockets" in it, I must build rockets for a living!) just dumb shit I would never write

shakey, how are you accessing it? i can't bring up anything like what mordy described in desktop browser or on ios.

I feel like the amount of ads is pretty reasonable for a website that has no other ads and is free, and the ads are far less eerie and annoying as those I see on Facebook or Amazon or other sites that use your browsing history in a more brazen manner. And I still enjoy the heck out of the site ... I keep finding cool new people to follow.

well I'm not on facebook either. Amazon is kind of a different deal, I kind of expect to be advertised at while I'm buying stuff

I have a strong recollection that after one of the redesigns they tried to get people to add bio to their profile, and I think it had boilerplate info in it that you could replace or delete if you wanted to. Very easy thing to accidentally approve.
