>>I'd say this only compares to chatham or branca live, but boadrum was free and more kid friendly.

Not to take away from last night because it was pretty amazing, but I saw Branca's 100 Guitars at Disney Concert Hall last year and it was one of the greatest things I've ever experienced. The sheer number of guitarists accomplished something that only 100 guitarists could. Last night didn't really need 88 drummers.

seeing chatham's 200 gtrs on friday so I will compare and contrast

Cool! Now that you've established that for yourself - you don't need to visit!

Savannah Smiles, Sunday, 10 August 2008 15:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Gottsching I am definitely making it to. I hope it is good :{}

That was totally fucking sweet even though I didn't get together with any of the people who I knew who said they'd meet me there.

Though if Ned took those shots, I think he was about ten feet to the left of us.

It was not nearly as crowded as I feared, though I was annoyed at how many people came there and just wanted to chit chat through the whole fucking set, including one dude who had a volunteer badge and some chick who was up for a promotion and "Like, I totally deserve it." I felt like such an old man telling people to shut up, but Christ, during that tickety-tockety quiet bit, I wanted to hear the music, not the 15-year-old dollar-store Adrock behind me.

Ah, I'm a bit pissed that I missed this...but then I was one of the lucky few who actually made it into the one last year. I wonder if they'll do a 9/9/09 one? That'll fall on a Wednesday or something though.

Shit, they should just do a variation of this EVERY summer. But maybe that would get stale after a while. I dunno.

1010 drummers in 2010.

(And on second look, I think those pictures were actually taken from across from where we were.)

Hahah! Well, I did in fact take those shots I posted, so there you go. (xpost) Although as you say maybe opposite -- were you facing Eye at all?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 August 2008 00:16 (fifteen years ago) link

I just realized that the pics of the stage setup remind me of Close Encounters--they should do next year at Devil's Tower.

BoaDrum was very original. I had never heard the Boredoms but the music was much prettier than I expected and I got a sense of sonic waves.

It is still above me but I can imagine why people get so into it.

i am also going to murphy/mahoney/etc

i went to this and it was really poorly organized. the space was way too small for the number of ticketholders, thus packed crowds inside and long lines outside and not very much room to dance after 1am or so. the line was so long for the bar that it took over most of the dance floor. lincoln heights is a great area to hold a party like this, but next time they should take over a disused warehouse instead of a tiny studio.

get bent, Monday, 11 August 2008 23:59 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost, true about the size of the space, but i liked the small sweaty atmosphere. there are better venues, but the sets kept me there til the party was over

Marty, that was very interesting music

gabbneb, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 00:08 (fifteen years ago) link

does anyone have a boot of either performance yet?

Creeztophair, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:05 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost felicity - it is less music and more pure energy translated into sound!

Yes, I am starting to get what that means. Pretty cool.

Now that it’s all said and done and there’s been some distance, I listen way way way more to the rock band version of bore more than the sun cult drums and guitar wall version.

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 12 March 2021 23:45 (three years ago) link

Did this band change their name to an Ilx shibboleth after everyone learned that 88 was a Nazi shibboleth

Oh I guess I’m off base on what this is the name of or whatever

Oh man I couldn't get into 77 Boadrum so I had to watch from the Brooklyn Bridge. It still ruled

J. Sam, Saturday, 13 March 2021 00:09 (three years ago) link

Sorry I just am worried about 88s usually

Canon in Deez (silby), Saturday, 13 March 2021 00:13 (three years ago) link

That 77 Boadrum show was so intense live, it's hard to explain! The first time they all did the improve freakout I had to try really hard to hold it together just watching from the side.

Evan, Saturday, 13 March 2021 00:23 (three years ago) link

several of my friends played the 88 L.A. one ... they had section leaders and there was definitely a, uh, diverse range of aptitudes represented. My friend whose husband played got to meet Kevin Haskins from Bauhaus so that was cool.

sarahell, Saturday, 13 March 2021 00:25 (three years ago) link

It was cool. Still have the shirt!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 March 2021 00:32 (three years ago) link

Me too!
