I've never liked Neil Young very much.

Letta Mbulu is a good choice! At least everyone who's HEARD her. All three of us.

I find Al Green really really annoying actually.

MCR?
MC5?
MC Hammer?

the guy who said Smokey Robinson and the Miracles was right all along.

Can't stand the bloody Meters. Not that bothered about Hatfield either.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 10:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Smokey Robinson seems like a good bet.

I can appreciate the Beatles for what they accomplished, but I wouldn't call myself a fan.

James Brown. Go ahead and tell me I'm wrong, but I think James Brown is it.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 22:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I could totally live without the Meters (and I like lots of New Orleans r&b! They always seemed like funk for jam band fans to me.)

I like Prince fine through 1987 or so; after that, he just gets more annoying to me by the minute (speaking of funk for jam band fans).

And I've never had any use of Juliana Hatfield or Fugazi at all (in fact, if anything, I'd say I actively dislike both of them).

xhuxk, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 22:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Weird. I find the Meters to be one of the least jammy funk bands -- especially since all their songs were so short.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 16 March 2006 01:37 (eighteen years ago) link

the monkees dammit
everyone loves the monkees

powpowpow, Thursday, 16 March 2006 03:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Everyone who deserves to live loves the Vaselines. When the Doomsday Machine goes off and we have to decide who to let into the nuke-proof mineshafts, I dearly hope they only let in Vaselines fans.

Oh, really?
Wow. For some reason, I thought you would be a Young fan.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 16 March 2006 03:18 (eighteen years ago) link

> I find the Meters to be one of the least jammy funk bands -- especially since all their songs were so short.<

Well, their songs usually just never seemed to me to have SONGS attached, which was the problem, I guess. They always just seemed like clinicians to me, laying down Funky Grooves in a workmanlike fashion I couldn't imagine why anybody particularly cared about (better for sampling, I guess, than for actually listening to.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 16 March 2006 15:10 (eighteen years ago) link

(then again, admittely, it's been a while since i tried listening to them. maybe i'd think differently if i listened to them today. but when i've tried before, they seemed way less fun than people said.)

i was playing a meters tape in my car once and a friend asked "is this the grateful dead?"

this has occurred to me, too. so good for sampling that it's probably true even if you like them.

James Brown. Go ahead and tell me I'm wrong, but I think James Brown is it.

I not only dislike him. I blame him for everything that is wrong about music today.

The "1974: most important year in pop?" debate continues...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:39 (seventeen years ago) link

i revived the thread because of Lay All Your Love on Me! i dont think that song is from 1974. wtf are you on about

fez (fez), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:42 (seventeen years ago) link

i fucking loathe queen, and i find abba resolutely unlovable

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:43 (seventeen years ago) link

There is no ILx consensus on anyone!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I wonder exactly what Lex's aversion is apropos mixed-gender groups?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm quite surprised by Lex's post. I mean, even I like a bit of Abba, aside from the campier bits (Dancing Queen etc) and "The Visitors" is one of my favourite records that I've ehard in recent times - and I'm as rockist as they come by ILX standards. Queen are good too. How can anyone hate on pop/rock gems like Killer Queen and Don't Stop Me Now?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:48 (seventeen years ago) link

That'll be the "Why I Hate" column in the next Plan B sorted out, then.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Kraftwerk is still the best answer to the question.

fez (fez), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I wonder exactly what Lex's aversion is apropos mixed-gender groups?

mixed-gender pop groups - abba, s club, steps - usually come with this blue peter sheen to them which really distracts from any emotional import their lyrics would have in the hands of others; also the men, especially if they sing, tend to be completely superfluous to proceedings. i like songs here and there by all the above groups, but as entities i'm not particularly enthused.

queen vfo'prfuss\jkbnc AAAAAAARRRRGGHHHHHH

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 13:59 (seventeen years ago) link

that's a good summary of mixed-gender groups. I fidn I often have a similar problem with mixed-gender duets, particularly on the Gothier side of Metal.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 14:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Complaining there's no emotional import to S Club lyrics is like complaining there are no nice melodies in grime.

I love this thread, especially when people are like "surely EVERYONE loves Yo La Tengo!"
