??? There's nothing bad or offensive about any of these songs but I don't see what the big deal is. They sound like any multitude of bands you'd see covered by Alternative Press. Like a late 2000's emo band reinventing themselves as an opener for Maroon 5.

I'm jealous of how much you guys are liking them, I can hear that I should be into it but they remind me too much of every tool hanging out at the Old Blue Last (which I have no reason to believe is a fair assessment) for me to listen with adequately open ears.

yeah the reason i find them pretty novel is i don't have a precedent for a hybridization of emo and '80s r&b

The instinctive aversion of people with taste kinda makes me enjoy them more? idk

Just turned in my AP review this morning, ha ha. It'll be on their website early next week.

i'm curious as to your take on it phil. looking forward to the review

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 30 August 2013 19:10 (ten years ago) link

I'm curious how AP's readers will respond to it, since to me this album sounds super '80s - I reference Wang Chung, Fun Boy Three, General Public and John Hughes movie soundtracks.

I'm loving "Heart Out", though it does make me want to start singing the lyrics of "This Must Be The Place" on top of it.

I've got the Shipley's covered on this one.

Missing the more ambient, drifting tracks from the EP's.

MikoMcha, Saturday, 31 August 2013 04:29 (ten years ago) link

Those are cool n all but this album is something special. No complaints at all.

I’m pissed off for greatness (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Saturday, 31 August 2013 04:42 (ten years ago) link

I think the second half is even better than the first half.

I’m pissed off for greatness (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Saturday, 31 August 2013 04:43 (ten years ago) link

"menswear" is an excellent hybrid of the ambient drifting stuff and the stuff on the album so it's hard for me to miss that aspect

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 31 August 2013 04:55 (ten years ago) link

also "menswear" is literally about going to a wedding in a remote location and not being able to find drugs and therefore getting piss drunk

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 31 August 2013 04:55 (ten years ago) link

Oh, I was hoping it was a subtle jab at Scott Schuman.

I listened to one of their songs on YouTube
Sounded like John Mayer

Ha, Menswear is a jam. I didn't think it was going to go anywhere beyond what it was doing but that abrupt drop is perfect.

I’m pissed off for greatness (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Saturday, 31 August 2013 05:11 (ten years ago) link

The first few listens didn't do much for me beyond Sex, The City, and Settle Down but after listening to it on my "good" headphones instead of the ones I usually use, ones where the right earpiece falls off the band if I tilt my head too far to the right because I didn't tape it well enough, anyway, I listened to this on decent headphones and I'm suddenly enjoying it a lot more.

Murgatroid, Saturday, 31 August 2013 05:13 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, the absence of the ambient stuff isn't anything like a deal breaker, since the album is so focussed and most tracks are total pop songs with big hooks.
