I only look at twitter through tweetbot, so I will never see this line.

Jeff, Thursday, 29 August 2013 02:43 (ten years ago) link

does anyone else remember when they did this before, for about a day, and then got rid of it? or have i gone nuts?

also, it doesn't really work with more than two people, does it? twitter conversations get muddled too quickly for it to make sense.

my line is red rather than blue, idk what that says about me.

the new conversation view doesn't work with the conversations on my tl - people aren't having then in a strictly linear you-talk-then-i-talk way. i wish twitter could have rolled it out w/ an opt-out option.

i can't see any blue lines or red lines?

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 August 2013 12:08 (ten years ago) link

only blurred lines

乒乓, Thursday, 29 August 2013 12:15 (ten years ago) link

you joke but as we type some enterprising youtube guitar comedian is writing a blurred lines/twitter conversation view "parody"

also, lex, they don't roll out new features to all users at once, so it's likely it just hasn't got to you yet - often it doesn't happen until you start a new twitter session (by logging in or by starting up yr browser and opening the twitter website)

this is kinda interesting

Mohammad Reza Sadeq, an advisor to Rowhani, has said that the tweet is false, as the president has no Twitter account, according to the Persian language version of Deutsche Welle, a German news organization.

Rowhani’s Twitter account could be run by the media office of Rowhani’s presidential campaign team.

As the election has been over for some time, “it raises the question of whether the people running the account continue tweeting in an official or unofficial capacity and whether or not they coordinate directly with Rouhani or his office,” according to the Washington Post.

Iran-watchers suggest that the president may be keeping the account semi-official to deflect criticism by internal hard-liners while at the same time showing good faith toward the West, said the U.S.-based daily.

Let me make two apologies at the outset: My apologies if this post ends up being rather long, and my apologies if this post turns into a rant. (Since I’m kind of new posting here, if anyone needs to get a general idea of who I am, there’s some information on a thread at ILM called ‘Introduce Yourselves’.)

ghostly international (the label) follows everyone who follows them

Does anyone know of some Twitter accounts like these that will follow back most of those who follow them? I’ve wanted to give Twitter a try but the prospect of having zero number of followers doesn’t appeal to me. I’m just interested in getting maybe one or two dozen followers to start me off. I don’t need hundreds or thousands of followers. People/accounts that usually follow back would be good, if actually ‘legitimate’. I’d just have to follow one or two dozen of these people/accounts and they’d follow me back and I’d have some followers. I’ve come across a few web pages claiming to list people/accounts that follow back, but I have no idea if the information presented is accurate.

yoko ono follows nearly 1 million accounts

some people just follow everyone who follows them

Yoko Ono was on at least one of these lists at these web sites, so that might explain why she follows nearly 1 million accounts; She’s probably following everyone who follows her, if these web sites are accurate/correct.

Outline of my current ‘dilemma’: My primary motivation for wishing to give Twitter a try is to tweet about animal welfare issues/stories/charities, such as The Animal Rescue Site, and to follow some animal welfare organizations on Twitter. Though, I would most likely tweet about (and follow) other accounts and stuff (music, current events/investigative journalism articles about current events, etc., and I probably wouldn’t be immune to getting caught up in various Twitter ‘wars’ or whatever they’re called). As far as I can tell, most people start on Twitter by asking people they know (friends/neighbors/co-workers) to follow them. As I live in a low-income neighborhood, my friends/neighbors/co-workers are not on Twitter. None of them are, I have asked around. Quite a few of my friends/neighbors/co-workers don’t even have computers, let alone Twitter accounts. So, I must get any followers online. I’ve looked around on the internet for advice about this but I’ve found much of the ‘advice’ to be crass, to say the least. (Examples of advice: ‘Lie and make yourself seem incredibly interesting!’, ‘Be a herd conformist who follows what’s/who’s popular, and only tweet what other people want to read!) So, I’m at a loss concerning this problem. The more I research/read about Twitter, the more outraged I become; I’ll spare you most of the details. But, for example, Twitter defines ‘spam account’ as a Twitter account that tweets mostly links and mostly retweets. This is exactly what an animal welfarist would do: Tweet links to animal welfare news/stories and retweet information from animal welfare organizations. Instead of tweeting about important animal welfare issues, Twitter would apparently prefer people to tweet about personal nonsense as long as it doesn’t involve tweeting links and retweets. So, even if I did manage to get a Twitter account with some followers, Twitter might suspend my account because I would be tweeting links (to animal welfare news/stories) and retweeting (information from animal welfare organizations). Twitter doesn’t seem concerned what the content of either the links and/or retweets might be. Typical: Twitter’s public cheer-leading for content-free communication. Twitter recently eliminated the ‘Auto-Follow’ feature. As if this is/was Twitter’s main problem: Eliminate Auto-Follow, but keep promoting content-free communication at all costs. I’ve become aware that paying for followers is considered a big no-no. I don’t have the money to pay for followers, but considering the crass Twitter advice available, I’ve concluded that bribing/paying for Twitter followers is the least offensive tactic: At least you’re being up-front about what you’re doing; None of this deceitful crap that passes for Twitter advice/rules/guidelines. I’m really beginning to hate Twitter and ‘Twitter Culture’. Despite my increasing disgust with both Twitter and ‘Twitter-culture’, I would probably still like to give Twitter a try, for the sake of animals and their welfare. I’ve toyed with the idea of maybe having zero followers and wearing my unpopularity as a sort of ‘badge of honor’ (kind of like: You don’t like me ‘cause I’m not famous or affluent? Well, fuck you then.), but I’m pretty sure that would also get my (not-yet-in-existence) Twitter account suspended. FYI: My proposed Twitter account would be a personal account, not a work-related account. So, if anyone knows of some people/accounts that actually do follow all/most of those who follow them, (or knows of some other method by which someone can get one or two dozen or so Twitter followers), the information would be appreciated.

Um, OK. That does seem a little odd to me. I really do like and respect animals. Animals and their welfare are the main motivations for me to investigate Twitter, but I would probably tweet about other stuff as well.

twitter is not going to suspend your account. follow some people you are friends with irl and some animal rights organizations, for a start. don't know what the point of having followers just for the sake of having followers is

"for example, Twitter defines ‘spam account’ as a Twitter account that tweets mostly links and mostly retweets"

I suppose twitter do not want to define a 'spam account' as 'you know one when you see one', but that's really the case: whenever a spam account follows me on twitter, or favourites one of my tweets, I can recognise it instantly. It uses out-of-context retweets to populate its account; it uses a lot of links with little contextual information, often shortened using bit.ly or a similar unnecessary url-disguising middleman, many of which lead to suspicious-looking sites; its bio is weird and generated; its follower/following account is skewed in a certain way; its content is illiterate in a way that suggests machine-reading rather than poor English. Twitter suspends accounts when they have been reported for spam a number of times and subsequently recognised as such. It does not have the processing power to crunch the numbers on every currently-active account and decide based on their link/retweet frequency whether they are spam or not: it can only wait for reports.

Please don't be mistaken that you would be starting a twitter account "for the sake of animals and their welfare", though: you would be starting it for yourself. There isn't any shame in that. Having a place where you can collate the information you want to read about animal welfare, following relevant organisations and retweeting what seems most important to you, is a totally valid way of engaging with an issue that matters to you. Maybe someone else will find it useful, down the line. Maybe someone else has already done it!

I’m really beginning to hate Twitter and ‘Twitter Culture’.

after getting really into for a while i'm finding myself tempted to delete my account. i kind of need it for work though. there's a real relief in closing it.

i'd say if you want followers then post things. perhaps you'll have opinions on the articles you rt etc, you gain followers by following people and by tweeting a decent amount. after a while you kind of make "friends" whom you may never have met who seem to post similar things to you.

if you want people to follow you on twitter or tumblr, you have to find & engage those types of people & talk about the subjects they're interested in. it's not super hard. over thinking it isn't gonna help any; in any case it just sounds like you've made up a story for yourself about what your twitter experience ~might~ be like and using that conjecture to justify your non-participation. just jump in dude, it's not exactly a high-risk proposition

Thanks for all the replies to my post.

Fair enough. You're probably right. Though, if it wasn't for the animal welfare issues/organizations that I'm involved with, I probably wouldn't even bother with Twitter; as for Twitter itself: I can (take or) leave it; it's the animal welfare issues/organizations that have actually motivated me to look into this thing called Twitter.

no i just meant the phrasing there made it sound like you were doin some leg-pulling

I just meant that if it weren't for animal welfare, I wouldn't put up with all the crass nonsense I've come across regarding Twitter, I would have abandoned the idea of creating a Twitter account some time ago. That I still might sign-up with Twitter is mainly because of my concern for animals. I would probably follow/tweet about other stuff as well but that 'other stuff' isn't my main motivation for actually trying to join Twitter.

100% there'll be an animal welfare twitter community just as there is for probably ever imaginable pastime or interest

I hope so!

didn't know condoms weren't vegan friendly

Me neither.

I think twitter has been built up into something far more than it is here

Yeah. I've also noticed that many people on Twitter no longer answer/pay attention to their email. They expect you to contact them via Twitter. This is probably more of a problem with people in general, than with Twitter, but Twitter is making this (somewhat asocial) behavior easier for such people.

it just sounds like you've made up a story for yourself about what your twitter experience ~might~ be like and using that conjecture to justify your non-participation. just jump in dude, it's not exactly a high-risk proposition

Perhaps. Hard to tell with much certainty, since I'm not on Twitter (yet).
