Rolling 'this is sexist' thread

the headline makes it seem pretty awful and then the details are just so much worse than you can possibly imagine

That promotion for a pay money to teenage girls to see their sex videos site (but they're actually funding collge degrees!) - kind of an object lesson in 'empowerment-washing', a new thing a bit like white-washing or green-washing

still really pissed abt an acquaintance of mine. last night was out w/ a bunch of ppl and a fried who is a v. smart roboticist doing v. cool things with swarms of 'em is there. she discusses a bit about difficulties of being in a male field, etc, but also how they're working to hire women in academia, etc. other dude starts being holier than tho about if you 'really want gender parity' and also starts to keep bringing up that he is brown and has a hard time with airplane security checks (nb. she is asian). also starts talking about 'men explaining my field to me' tumblr. ok fine. then later as she's talking about her research of course he starts explaining her field to her, going on and on about math (he knows quite a bit, but only has an undergrad degree, i think, and certainly no real world experience w. robotics) and talking about how a 'serious mathematician' would handle the various hamiltonian manifold this and that. i was appalled. he's young and arrogant but i don't think he'd have ever been that much of a dick to a man.

oh and he mentions some technique in algebraic geometry and she says 'yeah i don't really know how to apply that' and he says "xxx (her husband) can help you with that." Why would he be able to help? He's in the same field as her, but there's no reason to think that he knows more about that sort of math -- if anything, she's got more of a background in that field.

my impression is she thought he was being a dumb child, and sort of rolling her eyes, but i didn't get a chance to discuss with her afterwards. i tried to diffuse and just steer the conversation away from him being an ass, wasn't under the impression that white-knighting or w/e would be appreciated.

It's hard, when you are a direct person, not to be direct on others' behalves if they haven't done it themselves!

i attend a canadian university, organising hitler youth esque rallies & branding girls with alliterative misogynistic epithets is kinda de rigueur, here; i am surprised it has not blown up before now. i almost feel like to tie the above to a particular incident undermines it, as if it's specifically insensitive rather than broadly, comprehensively insensitive. it is a very terrible way to treat & inaugurate the arrival of young people to a city/to adult life imo.

Not feeding the trolls doesn’t magically scrub out the image in your head of being told you’ll be gang-raped till you die. I'm sure 'don't feed the trolls' doesn't apply to online harrassment so it's kind of a stupid thing to say. I agree with 'don't feed the troll' when someone's just posting something challopsy or annoying just to get a rise but these people aren't trolling.

I knew a guy who was "ironically" racist/misogynist in high school, I think partially as a reaction to his school environment and his blue collar dad really being different in default stances so he went over the top, and it was my first view into the fact that you are the person you act as in daily life, not the person you internally think you are. If people see you being a sexist asshole who treats women like shit, then...

well if someone does it w/r/t someone in the public eye that i already have it in for (e.g. zimmerman) then i'm gonna be on their side, i think. so then if someone does it to someone i don't have it in for in a terrible way i'm not sure how a legal distinction is possible

i think he did in fact break the law he was accused of breaking (whether it's good law idk), but it's also true than in a highly technical and obscure case the prosecution paraded all of his online abusiveness and white power nuttiness in front of the jury and they threw him away.

he's also like the most famous 'troll' ever, there's a times profile of him from i swear like 3 years ago, if the other horrible thing's he's done are of interest.
