"Valkyrie" is dope but ugh guest rapper get thee gone

some dude, Monday, 19 August 2013 11:33 (ten years ago) link

Those are both really good. Wish Goldenheart had included some of these newer tracks; it could have used the variety

Evan R, Monday, 19 August 2013 13:14 (ten years ago) link

"Judith" is incredible, I am really digging the dialing down of the intentional autotune overdrive to allow the real colors of her voice through

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Monday, 19 August 2013 19:04 (ten years ago) link

the polish is impressive (and a change was probably undeniably necessary) but idk i'm still yet to quite be convinced by these new ones - kinda feel like well-meaning but slightly off novel/tv adaptations of a beloved messy pulp comic book

r|t|c, Monday, 19 August 2013 19:28 (ten years ago) link

"Judith" is gorgeous

s. cloverlandthug (The Reverend), Monday, 19 August 2013 22:24 (ten years ago) link

they're both impressive in their own ways but i can understand people's reservations. i remain optimistic.

dyl, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 03:25 (ten years ago) link

these songs don't pop like the non-album tracks that came out earlier this year, but that just makes me feel like i'll need to hear it all in album context to appreciate it. still a little annoyed that some really good songs will probably remain forever uncollected, though.

some dude, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 09:30 (ten years ago) link

yeah going back to cuts like "empty room" and "love on the rocks" and "movie" it's apparent that the lack of immediacy with these is totally deliberate rather than she's forgotten how to write a hook (although i have my suspicions that she might have dredged "empty room" in particular up from the danity kane era - it's that sort of song)

apparently "judith" was inspired by the klimt painting!!!

Dawn teams with producer Cronos on “Judith,” which was inspired by the Gustav Klimt painting “Judith.” “It’s the story of a painting that is priceless and quite iconic being forgotten after being hung in a home too long,” she said.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 09:45 (ten years ago) link

like...does she actually sing from the perspective of the painting? because that is amazing.

three weeks pass...

on the one hand, "judith" and "valkyrie" have been really growing on me - in partic the remix of the latter with jojo, who absolutely kills her verse.

on the other hand, looks like this danity kane reunion has thrown a spanner in the works - http://dopeavenue.com/exclusive-dawn-richard-talks-blackheart-album-danity-kane-reunion/

So Blackheart was scheduled to come out in October, but when the Danity Kane announcement came about, many fans were left speculating about what that meant for Blackheart. Can you clarify for the Hearts what the plan of action is going to be?

Dawn: Blackheart will come after DK project. I owe it to the hearts to give a proper release. I don’t want to confuse the DK fans and hearts. It was a hard decision to make but I think it’s a smart one. Blackheart is too great to rush and not tour on. I’d have to put it out and wait to tour and the hearts know how much I love touring. But 3 projects in a year is alot to hold them over and there is still a DK single coming this year so plenty to look forward to still. Just getting started.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 08:54 (ten years ago) link

idk how i feel about the DK reunion at all tbh - i loved them but i don't get any sense of unfinished business there at all (like i do with MKS). and it goes completely against the dawn richard solo brand - but then it's really not like that was getting massive amounts of traction, and weirdly i see more people hyped about DK (though it's not like DK happened at all over here, so maybe i'm underestimating how much people cared about them to start with?)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 08:56 (ten years ago) link

yeah Danity Kane's music feels very tied to that 2006-2008 period they existed in, in a way they seem like the last gasp of the R&B-as-pop era the Ariana Grande album harkens back to, it's a little hard to imagine what they consider 'their' sound that they want to return with (although apparently the single was produced by the same guys who did "Damaged" so maybe they're just trying to pick up exactly where they left off).

yeah Noisecastle III really let himself down here

r|t|c, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:17 (ten years ago) link

is blackheart not happening or just paused until danity kane's album happens? seems like they're taking much longer than dawn normally would.

If someone has to make a 'Cincinatti Fever' bootleg out of Dawn one-off soundcloud tracks can we please call it 'False Dawn'?

Tim F, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 20:06 (ten years ago) link

no it has to be called cincinatti fever

Armor On is such an interesting album, but I prefer LTTP. The production on both of these is so overwhelming. *cries*
I need to give Goldenheart more spins.

i mean, it's worth it if this reformation actually smashes, but it doesn't seem like dawn's going to bring her own ideas to it as such

But the singer's affinity for fantasy doesn't stem from a book series or its corresponding HBO show. When Richard was a kid, she dissected the artwork of Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, studying his use of gold flakes in the 1901 work "Judith and the Head of Holofernes," based on the Biblical character of Judith. Richard was fascinated by the longing in Judith's gaze, existing underneath her beauty and the regal symbols encapsulating her face.

r|t|c, Monday, 1 December 2014 13:39 (nine years ago) link

it's really good! i never warmed up to "blow" but she sounds so relaxed here (but not at the expense of the obsessiveness she does so well). love the tropical vibes. the vocal switch-up >>>>

lex pretend, Monday, 1 December 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

the obvious thing finally hit me, peering at this song's nagelish sketch art as the strange melancholy jazz fusion chords exploded into breezy bubble economy "let's be careless and vibe yeah!" utopia - this is most surely a precision rendering of 90s japanese citypop, a such dawn very romance mr sparkles alternate reality
