I'm willing to buy that it wasn't created as a racist conceit. I'm not willing to accept that it made it into print without someone along the way realizing the obvious racial interpretation. I mean, this is a well-worn ploy of the right: Annoy the left by acting stupidly and then pretending not to understand what they could have pahwwwssssssibly done wrong when called on it. The Post's editors understood very well the lines of development of this type of juvenile drama, but they didn't quite realize that they would have a wider audience this time. At least, their 1/2-assed "apology" makes me think that they're a wee bit worried, though not too much, about the backlash. They've probably tripled their sub re-up for this month, tho.

Move the last one from 'batshit' to "unfortunately very accurate and realistic"
― burt_stanton, Friday, 20 February 2009 22:30 (fifteen years ago) link
Well, firstly Europe's offer of help in Afghanistan occurred under Bush. And also http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/ukfs_news/hi/newsid_7900000/newsid_7901000/7901078.stm , combined with individual states (ie Britain wanting to increase their troop levels) makes the second part bullshit. I wish we'd said no to Bush, on both Iraq and Afghanistan, and I wish we would say no to Obama about more body bags coming home. But that's not 'accurate or realistic'.
― dowd, Friday, 20 February 2009 23:41 (fifteen years ago) link
There are 30,000 European troops in Afghanistan, which considering the people of Europe thought it was stupid is either commendable or deplorable depending on your point of view. But I live in a small village attached to a military base, from a military family, and most of my friends are in the forces, having served (usually multiple times) in Afghanistan, and I find this 'unhelpful Europe' meme to be insulting. Especially as I have yet to meet a member of our forces who thinks we should be there at all, yet are willing to leave their families to serve.
― dowd, Friday, 20 February 2009 23:59 (fifteen years ago) link
FWIW, I'm pretty neutral on the topic of commitment of European support for US (and world) interests in the current Afghanistan quagmire; the element that seemed accurate on that toon was that European political commitment and public opinion (as far as I can see from behind the US media wall) hasn't really shifted on that topic considerably since Obama has taken office, excepting the continued international extended honeymoon love for our fearless leader. Insinuations of the cartoonist were not what I was promoting as valid. I'll be honest and say I don't know what the fuck we, or anyone but the indigenous people of the region, are doing in Afghanistan or what the end game is and that I couldn't begin to start conceiving of how things can come to anything resembling a new beginning in this presidency.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The chairman of the New York Post, Rupert Murdoch, personally apologized Tuesday for an editorial cartoon published by the newspaper that drew charges of racism.
"Today I want to personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted," said the statement from Murdoch, who is also chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, which owns the paper.
"I can assure you -- without a doubt -- that the only intent of that cartoon was to mock a badly written piece of legislation.
"It was not meant to be racist, but unfortunately, it was interpreted by many as such. We all hold the readers of the New York Post in high regard, and I promise you that we will seek to be more attuned to the sensitivities of our community."
The cartoon by Sean Delonas referenced the mauling of a Connecticut woman by a chimpanzee who was later shot and killed by police. In the caption, one of the officers says, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."
The cartoon was published on Wednesday, a day after President Obama signed the stimulus bill.
The Post issued a statement the following day, apologizing but noting that the cartoon was meant to mock what it called an "ineptly written" stimulus bill.
Many critics said the cartoon played on historically racist images by appearing to compare Obama, the nation's first black president, to the chimpanzee.
Leaders of the NAACP on Saturday called for the firing of Delonas.
Delonas called the controversy "absolutely friggin' ridiculous."
"Do you really think I'm saying Obama should be shot? I didn't see that in the cartoon," Delonas told CNN.
"It's about the economic stimulus bill," he added. "If you're going to make that about anybody, it would be [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi, which it's not."

Not bad. Actually, if we apply a Burroughs-like cut-up technique to most of these strips, I think they'd all be far more enjoyable and more coherent.
Good luck working Prickly City into it, tho.
