i do think yall are underestimating america's propensity for forgiveness -- i mean dude is gonna have an apologetic press conference where he cries, he's gonna do a huge interview on abc or something, he's gonna go on a tour speaking to kids speaking out against violence, he's gonna apologize some more, he's gonna go away for a year or so and then he's gonna come back with a "fun" single like "kiss kiss" and life is gonna go on

i think this depends a lot on whether or not it goes to trial, how long the trial lasts, what rihanna says abt their relationship (isolated incident vs. pattern of abuse for example), past girls coming forward to testify, etc.

i don't know about whether or not i feel his career should be over, but uh, i just can't feel bad for him right now

Surmounter, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:32 (fifteen years ago) link

my bad i missed that, yeah surmounter otm

imo this is a really sad situation -- i only feel bad in the sense that im sure this is part of the cycle of abuse & at some point he was knocked around or brought up to believe that was an appropriate way to deal with his problems. Which is really fuckin sad, but now id definitely say im not feeling much sympathy for him beyond that -- at a certain pt folks need to take responsibility & figure out whats right & whats not. his career is over ... and it probably should be

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:34 (fifteen years ago) link

well sorry for having a more nuanced view of this than "omg he's evil he should rot in jail". I mean obviously what he did is terrible and indefensible but it's sad that this is his undoing considering how talented he is and how promising his career was. that's all I'm saying.

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:35 (fifteen years ago) link

look man i still listen to miles davis and ike turner & we all know the stories behind them ... but honestly how can you listen to a track like 'forever' & not have this taint the way you hear it?

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:36 (fifteen years ago) link

i think anyone who does that to someone is kind of evil, and doesn't deserve much of a nuanced view :/

Surmounter, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:36 (fifteen years ago) link

there are better places for this kind of discussion but deej is right--people arent born abusers--and its sad that this is case regardless of how talented & promising chris browns career is.

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:37 (fifteen years ago) link

i just wonder what goes through your mind when you're hitting someone like that.

Because I'm capable of divorcing the artist from the art? I mean, David Ruffin is one of my favorite vocalists.. he beat Tammi Terrell to her death practically... obviously no one can defend that, but I don't stop listening to his music because of it. His personal life doesn't detract from his talent. But anyway this is a different argument, maybe you can start a thread about it.

weekend goodtime (The Brainwasher), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:42 (fifteen years ago) link

yes, i can understand that divorce. i mean, i think music is meant to be divorced from a lot of things in life.

im not gonna get into this rite now so this is my last word on it for the moment, but most fans are invested in cb's persona as a 'real' thing & this is kind of a wizard-behind-the-curtain moment. i think u are definitely the exception to the rule if you can have that kind of cognitive dissonance

ok im done

gucci mane gretzky (deej), Friday, 20 February 2009 03:45 (fifteen years ago) link

interesting.

"bite marks"

he bit her?

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 03:50 (fifteen years ago) link

well also cb's persona is being a smoove and romantic guy so violently assaulting a pretty girl is basically anathema

You know how there are things you say to your friends which, due to verbal and physical context, come across in a completely different manner than when you say them on a message board? Welcome to there, BJO.

Chris Brown, from o to 0

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious xkcd comics), Friday, 20 February 2009 17:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Women and Girls Collective Action Network made a good point:

We hear so much of what will happen to Chris Brown’s reputation and career if these allegations are proven to be true. We hear how all Chris Brown’s sponsors and endorsements will back down, and how his entire career may go down the drain. Now we ask, what is going to happen to Rihanna? We never hear, on a well publicized scale, how this is going to affect her career. We do not even hear how she may be damaged mentally, physically, or emotionally after this incident of abuse. You would think that because she is a survivor of abuse, people would be concerned with her well-being.

As far as Rihanna goes, this is what we do know. Last summer, Rihanna had released a statement saying how she starting building her career from endorsements before she even released her hits. The LA Times recently reported that Rihanna had the reputation of representing “something very positive and in particular a strong female role model, and when she is associated with a situation like this it can have an impact.” They quoted a marketing executive as predicting that companies are likely to shun her in the future.

im pretty sure when rihanna's new album drops and she has two number one singles she won't be hurting on endorsements

THE_REAL_BLAP (J0rdan S.), Friday, 20 February 2009 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link

still, all the more reason for her to coop w/police.

what's really fucked up that i keep forgetting is that he's 19 and she's 20.

i dont understand this paragraph

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 20:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I think all that really means is that Def Jam got her a couple modelling gigs before her first album dropped and those folks are willfully misinterpreting it to mean that she makes all her money off endorsements and not records/touring.

The Fursuit of Happiness (some dude), Friday, 20 February 2009 20:40 (fifteen years ago) link

they also must have not ever heard of marketing before if they genuinely think that companies arent banging on her agents door right now... im sympathetic to the idea that the response has unfortunately been all about vengeance on cb instead of concern for rihannas welfare (which i think is true, and pretty fucked up, and perpetuates a whole cycle of cultural violence and is probably not entirely divorced from cultural concerns about angry black men, but whatever)--but come ON.

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah...the press is analyzing what this means for CB's career and not hers because obvious he stands to be negatively affected by it a lot more...she might be too, but not in nearly the same way.

The Fursuit of Happiness (some dude), Friday, 20 February 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

see i took this,

something very positive and in particular a strong female role model

as being related to the gossip reporting about her being unsure as to whether she wants to cooperate/press charges since she still loves him or whatever, and how it would be perceived if she did not do those things. still a reach and a weird point to make, but yeah.

devin harris with an appletini (call all destroyer), Friday, 20 February 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

She's 21 ! Happy birthday, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rihanna

StanM, Friday, 20 February 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah...i mean honestly i feel like a lot of things are up in the air and very ambiguous right now...a little less so since that photo surfaced yesterday, but still a lot of unanswered questions and room for both parties to negotiate the road ahead either as well as possible given the situation, or in a way that just makes things worse.

she may lose some modeling gigs but she'll recoup that when she signs on as the spokesmodel for grandpa passantino's fruit-flavored girlfriend punch

dude it's kinda weird how in the last couple hours you've started a pretty contemplative ILE thread about modern humor while at the same timing coming out swinging on all these other threads with wack tired meta jokes
