What about the dude that sang the hit version of "Brother Louie". The group was The Stories, the guy Ian Lloyd, right?

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:59 (nineteen years ago) link

My friend thought Doug Martsch, on "Randy Described Eternity", was female. Understandable.

That *is* a woman on the Spinners' "Games People Play." The group was out of the country when Thom Bell was cutting that vocal part.

Cassandra Wilson is my vote for man-sounding-woman. More so than even the Auotmatic vocal by the Pointer Brother.

Mike Scheidt, singer/guitarist for the Oregon doom-metal trio Yob, sounds remarkably like a woman, specifically Lori S., singer/guitarist for stoner-metal trio Acid King.

I only just realized recently after hearing it at least 100 times that the Robin McNamara who sang "Lay a Little Lovin' on Me" was a dude.

It kinda goes both ways in Zep's "Battle of Evermore"--half the time I can't tell if it's Robert Plant or Sandy Denny singing.

Grazie to RW for the fact-check on "Games People Play." But weirdly, the guy with the handlebar mustache sings the female part in this Soul Train clip:

WHOA!

tony orlando and dawng (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 19 September 2008 02:41 (fifteen years ago) link

That's pretty ridiculous, but I'm pretty sure that like American Bandstand, performers lip-synched to the single on Soul Train.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 19 September 2008 02:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Or Horace Andy.

I had Horace Andy on one time and my mum came in and said "who's this woman you're listening to?" She also thought Nina Simone was a man once.

Death Vessel guy Joel Thibodeau is pretty uncanny.

Yar. I went to a Books concert where Death Vessel was the opening band and I spent the whole opening song trying to decipher if it was a guy or a girl, both for the voice and the androgynous look.

I had the opposite problem with "Pump up the Jam". I always thought it was a dude.

Z S, Friday, 19 September 2008 19:20 (fifteen years ago) link

The first time I heard Material Issue was "Kim the Waitress," which I could've sworn was sung by a woman with a husky voice (like Carla Bozulich), and I thought it was a lesbian-crush song.

The first time I heard "Border Song" on the radio when Elton's first record came out I was pretty sure "Elton" was just an unusual name for a woman.

I had the opposite problem with "Pump up the Jam". I always thought it was a dude.

There are a few as well. Thao Nguyen per example, i kept thinking it was a dude, I had to go to youtube to see the voice actually coming out of her to make sure it was a girl. Not that she has a very masculine voice, maybe all indie rock male singers are effeminate.

Also Courtney Love. I'm too young for Nirvana, so I first heard Hole through some friends and all the time I thought it was a dude singing until I saw a video.

Re: Todd Rundgren's resemblance to Carole King: I heard "I saw the Light" while watching the movie Kingpin last weekend and I immediately started a search for it on the internet assuming that it was a Carole King hit. I guess I'm not the only one.

the members of The Rock Mafia do not appear in the video for their song "The Big Bang"...i assumed the lead vocalist was female until i saw a male member of the band perform the song on TV this morning.
