no, there was this one fellow who wasn't only the token "nice guy" for the assault victim, he was ALSO the token "nice white guy" for Omar Epps!

AW

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:43 (twenty years ago) link

You're welcome, Anthony.
I think it was designed to be watched while extremely drunk and obnoxious. Let me see if I can remember the five symbols on the poster...
Female, Black Fist, Swastika, Peace...
Star of David? Dollar Bill? Please Recycle?

sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:49 (twenty years ago) link

I really appreciated how each lead character had a specific band that played behind them on the soundtrack. Very Peter And The Wolf.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:59 (twenty years ago) link

I'm with Miccio here. Also, Big Boi BETTER have a cameo as Otis Redding.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 03:00 (twenty years ago) link

It probably helps that I think Jimi Hendrix is really really funny already

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 03:02 (twenty years ago) link

Enrique Iglesias IS Santana! Oh God, if you're listening...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 03:03 (twenty years ago) link

Bright Eyes as Pete Townsend, DMX as Miles Davis, Dizzee Rascal as Little Richard...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 03:05 (twenty years ago) link

Dre is much taller than Big Boi, who despite the name is only about 5ft8in.

Apparently Dre's English accent is pretty shit - he tried it in that interview in the last issue of Muzik.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 13:08 (twenty years ago) link

Jimi's presumably was too

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 13:23 (twenty years ago) link

I have never for one second thought that Jimi Hendrix affected a British accent, and I've been a massive fan for around 20 years. Where in the heck did that come from?

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:18 (twenty years ago) link

Those Hughes Bros. are some controversial negroes I tell you what

Annoyed with pop culture (ModJ), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:40 (twenty years ago) link

Anything that's either going to be classic or crap is GREAT. Mediocrity is the true hell.

OTM OTM OTM!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:48 (twenty years ago) link

Higher Learning was great if only for Busta Rhymes' character.

Is everyone being sarcastic or do most of y'all really hate Hughes bros. movies? As far associal commentaryism goes I would say 'meh', but as far as tales-designed-for-emotional-manipulation-of-the-audience, they're top fucking notch.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:51 (twenty years ago) link

Anyway, I cannot even begin to imagine Andre being a worse/less-accurate Hendrix than whoever that asshat was in the last (incredibly shitty) Hendrix biopic.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:52 (twenty years ago) link

Dave Chappelle should be Hendrix.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:53 (twenty years ago) link

Hendrix was a funny guy.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:53 (twenty years ago) link

I adored FROM HELL. My GF, who isn't a guy or a film reviewer, loved it too.

The girl thing in it was pretty bad, but otherwise, a real pretty hoot. I like the idea of them doing, um, making a Hendrix biopic.

Will Trower dub the live show sequences?

Ian Grey (Ian_G), Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:22 (twenty years ago) link

From Hell was bad, but I read the comics and can't divorce the film from the story I was expecting. Maybe I'd like it if I hadn't read them.

if they're gonna do a black acid rock biopic the better choice (and the better story) would be Sly.

They can't do that one until he turns up dead.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:48 (twenty years ago) link

ok, I'm no longer so horrified about this, my focus has shifted to the news of Mos Def being cast as Ford Prefect in a "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" movie.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 29 January 2004 03:11 (twenty years ago) link

Seriously?

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 29 January 2004 03:16 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't like From Hell, and I've never read the comics. I hate Mos Def's "acting".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 29 January 2004 03:17 (twenty years ago) link

Robert Downey Jr. would have been a great Zaphod Beeblebrox.

sym (shmuel), Thursday, 29 January 2004 03:18 (twenty years ago) link

he had. a bad. experience.

No Hendrix music in Hendrix biopic

great idea

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 18:17 (eleven years ago) link

Janie Hendrix is taking a lot of shit in the comments there, but am I right in thinking that his estate was a shambles before she took over? Also, it looks like the filmmakers never had any intention (or at least not enough intention to bother asking) of using any original Hendrix-written material.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

ya right

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 22:21 (eleven years ago) link

Actually, I'd be in favor of more music biopics framing themselves as "how they got there" pieces rather than dramatizations of the super famous years. Hendrix did a lot of session work and scraping by before Are You Experienced? that I'm not at all familiar with.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 22:28 (eleven years ago) link

most good biopics are about a very limited period in the subject's life i find. cradle to grave ones always suck

blossom smulch (schlump), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 22:57 (eleven years ago) link

Hendrix's most iconic visual performances were of non-originals by Chip Taylor and Francis Scott Key anyways

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 23:02 (eleven years ago) link

and my favourite Hendrix track was written by Bob Dylan

this is very true, although at this point i feel pretty scorched earth about biopics in general and especially music biopics and ESPECIALLY ones that are an ego trip star vehicle for a musician-turned-actor. so basically still feel the same way i did upthread 8 years ago, fuck this shit, i hope it's a catastrophe, fuck andre, hendrix 4ever etc.

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 01:09 (eleven years ago) link

yes agree on all that. they're not always good when they do that. they're usually, as a rule, bad!

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Thursday, 5 July 2012 01:12 (eleven years ago) link

i think the last one i didn't venomously hate was the Andy Serkis-as-Ian Dury one, which i think got a lot of help from me not having too much familiarity with the subject to get hung up on accuracy/resemblance/etc.

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 01:14 (eleven years ago) link

not really a biopic if its not comprehensive, more of a memopic

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 July 2012 01:16 (eleven years ago) link

the only music one that i can remember liking is 24 party ppl and it doesnt even really belong in the category

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Thursday, 5 July 2012 01:27 (eleven years ago) link

a non-music one i really like is ed wood

man who fell to earth is p good

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 July 2012 01:29 (eleven years ago) link

stuck too much to the facts, u need to take creative liberties to tell a good story

the man who sold the world on the other hand, great bio-song

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Thursday, 5 July 2012 01:34 (eleven years ago) link

that's true, but i think a bigger issue with this for me is when you make a movie about a TV age celebrity/public figure, the viewer knows exactly what the real person looks/sounds/acts like and it becomes such a preoccupation or requirement. i mean i don't think The Doors is a very good movie but i'm pretty impressed with it just on the level of how uncanny Val Kilmer is as Morrison. (xpost)

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 01:35 (eleven years ago) link

the doors is such an amazing funny movie

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 July 2012 01:35 (eleven years ago) link
