Doug Loft. That's a name for a footballer, that is. (Or a feller who plays keyboards with Rush)

dean leacock's hair.

Oh, is that the Roland Gift-looking dude for Notts County?

Orient's shirt has a gradient!

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 3 August 2013 23:33 (ten years ago) link

My highlight of the opening day so far has been the Soccer Saturday reporter who described Wade Elliott as having Shoreditch trustafarian hair.

Davie Weir appears to be mutating into Peter Capaldi. Hopefully he'll embrace this and start doing post-match interviews in the manner of Malcolm Tucker.

Fffffffucking hell that Newport throw-in.

bugger i missed the throw in, was it challinorial

r|t|c, Saturday, 3 August 2013 23:42 (ten years ago) link

It was positively Delapesque.

ailsa, Saturday, 3 August 2013 23:43 (ten years ago) link

It was near-enough on the far post. Frightening. Possibly not as remarkable as that Mansfield penalty miss, though.

I bought a book about Rochdale today, quite excited. (Also stopped from getting on a bus for having food by a driver who looked remarkably like Micky Adams)

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 3 August 2013 23:45 (ten years ago) link

Also, look at that picket-fencing on their far stand. Marvellous.

Leroy dropping "my assistant manager at Gloucester City" into the conversation like it ain't no thang.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 3 August 2013 23:46 (ten years ago) link

is it me or is everyone on the field for cheltenham burton massively overweight

r|t|c, Saturday, 3 August 2013 23:48 (ten years ago) link

Ooh, that away stand at Exeter is the stuff of dreams. All standing, barely any tiering, L-shaping around the corner. Magic.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 3 August 2013 23:49 (ten years ago) link

This may possible be the shirts, Burton's discount polo effect vs whatever Cheltenham's thing is meant to be.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 3 August 2013 23:50 (ten years ago) link

league two highlights are the best highlights

r|t|c, Saturday, 3 August 2013 23:50 (ten years ago) link

Yellow and white stripes for Torquay. I think I like it.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 3 August 2013 23:51 (ten years ago) link

Red shirt, white sleeves, blue shorts - Sensible Soccer-tastic stuff from York.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 3 August 2013 23:52 (ten years ago) link

And Marvin Gaye over the end credits? Yes please.

Getting a bit fed up with Sky continually referencing how long clubs have been around for "Preston v Blackpool, that's a historic game" etc, also this Sky rebranding of everyone not in the Prem as FL72 is fucking ridiculous.

ailsa, Sunday, 4 August 2013 15:35 (ten years ago) link

it's nice when they occasionally acknowledge that football didn't start in 1992 tbh

phasmid beetle types (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 4 August 2013 15:39 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, but they're going completely overboard with it. I expect this will finish as soon as The Best League In The World gets back off its holiday.

ailsa, Sunday, 4 August 2013 15:44 (ten years ago) link

you bet

phasmid beetle types (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 4 August 2013 16:16 (ten years ago) link

Oh duh, thanks, I've just realised they're doing it because most of TBLITW is going to BT and they're sponsoring all the non-Prem teams. Sorry, bit slow on the uptake, despite them referring it to the Skybet League a gazillion times an hour.

Morecambe 1 - 0 Wolves

Jackett otm. Normally takes the Big Clubs a couple of seasons stranded in League One before they abandon those distracting cup runs.

oppet, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 21:27 (ten years ago) link

You can still get 33/1 on Newport for L2.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 21:54 (ten years ago) link

Also, Rory Delap plays for Burton Albion now?

oppet, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 22:07 (ten years ago) link

For some reason I thought he was younger than 37.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 22:24 (ten years ago) link

I bet Mowbray has been having a lot of dreams about dying recently.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 22:31 (ten years ago) link

Teams Boro have beaten in 2013: Hastings Utd, Aldershot, Leeds, Cardiff, Notts Forest.

oppet, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 22:40 (ten years ago) link

I read earlier on a football betting site a guy going "put money on Accrington. Guaranteed". Thought he might have been at it due to allegations about betting irregularities, but stuck a quid on at 11s anyway, and that was when it was 1-1. A winner is me.

ailsa, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 00:01 (ten years ago) link

not a terrible disaster last night tbh, kids looked okay, long way to go, lot of learning to do, need to practise getting lumps kicked out of them with no intervention from refs, not exactly the "humiliation" the hacks are pitching

Can't see my lot getting anything against QPR today. Looking at the probable line-ups it looks like a cup tie. Town had one of the worst goals against columns in the league last season and no pacy, composed centre back signings yet. If only the chairman hadn't baulked at Sean Morrison's price when they could have signed him and it would have been a bargain.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Saturday, 10 August 2013 11:26 (ten years ago) link

was this when morrison was leaving swindon? i don't think reading have ever had any intention of letting him go. v good defender i agree

too early to know what to expect from rangers, two wins so far but hairy moments during each that you feel would have changed the tide had they resulted in oppo goals (hit post and bar now i think about it). everyone can already see that austin is a huge improvement on the basically immobile bobby and judging by what you're saying about the hudds defence that selection will prove crucial today

vaughan, paterson, scannell, hamill can all be dangerous players on their day imo so idk. jon stead also has an absurd scoring record against us

r|t|c, Saturday, 10 August 2013 12:24 (ten years ago) link

SM was on loan for the 11/12 promotion season and enquiries were made and the chairman said at a fan Q+A that he was beyond our budget. Since then they must have noticed he is good, he signed a 4 year contract extension last year and was a decent performer in the prem. Our chairman made a similar mistake with Lambert and didn't want to pay a mill for a 28 year old player from Bristol Rovers "because he had no resale value at his age". Tbf on him he has invested a lot of money on training facilities, wrangling the stadium shares back from the RL chairman who knicked it for 2 quid and set up a rental formula that financially crippled the club for years.

Injury problems for Town today, Hunt and Hogg out. That is a major blow.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Saturday, 10 August 2013 13:34 (ten years ago) link

Huddersfield: Smithies, Clarke, Gerrard, Lynch, Hammill, Clayton, Norwood, Gobern, Carroll, Vaughan, Paterson. Subs: Scannell, Ward, Bennett, Stead, Wallace, Hunt, Crooks.

QPR: Green, Simpson, Onuoha, Hill, Yun, Granero, Barton, Henry, Hoilett, Austin, Johnson. Subs: Dunne, Wright-Phillips, Jenas, Zamora, Murphy, Ehmer, O'Neil.

r|t|c, Saturday, 10 August 2013 13:38 (ten years ago) link

LOL granero and henry what a combination

bewildering recall - granero looked to have been totally frozen out, the big pansy. no faurlin is a kick in the balls

r|t|c, Saturday, 10 August 2013 13:42 (ten years ago) link

Oh Hunt is on the bench, someone said Hunt is out on a msg board. Manager was livid with Hunt after tuesday's cup game. The team is weaker without him, despite his lapses of concentration.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Saturday, 10 August 2013 13:50 (ten years ago) link

weren't swansea rumoured to be interested in him? i've certainly heard rave reviews

r|t|c, Saturday, 10 August 2013 13:52 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I think they turned down a bid from the Swans a couple of months back.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Saturday, 10 August 2013 13:56 (ten years ago) link

seldom seen at this level three at the back for hudds, hmm

live commentary on bbc london btw if you can get it

Hunt is a versatile player who can play on the right of either defence or midfield, where he can showcase his general all-round athleticism. He currently lives in Rothwell, Leeds. He is often referred to by Huddersfield Town fans, most notably the writer of the unofficial fansite "HTFC World", as "The Helmet" following a comment made on Twitter.[2][3]

Danny Gee's cartoon match reports are top notch. Hunt is always calling critical or abusive fans "helmets" on twitter.

at what stage in our vocab development do we settle on the snap-default insult that we reach for in an instant for the rest of our lives i wonder
