it's funny to imagine the contrast between the caligulian frenzies that you read on yelp and the quotidian image of them sitting there and calmly eating it.

They wouldn't open the doors for me when I showed up 5-10 minutes before official opening hour, even though the staff was just standing around waiting. They wouldn't even let me drop some cash for a baguette so I could make my 7am date. Boo!

So the food's ~4 stars. 3 stars because I'm pissed that they kept me from having breakfast one day.

NO BITCH YOU DON'T GET TO DOCK A STAR BECAUSE THE STORE WOULDN'T OPEN EARLY SPECIFICALLY FOR YOU ONE TIME THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS

allowing people to comment and reply to specific reviews would lessen the circle jerky quality of their reviews, but i guess they don't want that...

Great way to start a review:

Hipsters are like Mexicans. If it weren't for the food I don't think I'd be able to stand them at all. Pharmacy Burger is one of those places where I have to be careful what time I go in there because I hate 95% of the clientele but am willing to put up with them because the food is just that good.

Once again, my little group, The Fungry Foodies, was unleashed on another unsuspecting small town (this time, Pasadena) and we descended upon this teenyish restaurant off of the main drag. Once again, we ordered the entire menu (save 3 dishes, because let's face it, we're pigs, not gluttons). And once again, it was stellar night.

I loved the attentive waitress who didn't quite believe us when we did order everything; and later, I loved that the chef herself had to come out to meet the crazy group who ordered and DEVOURED all that food.

There were a few misses, like the cod fritters, which didn't taste like any fish at all and just frittery; the husbster (self-professed octopus expert) did not like the overcooked octopus; and I didn't like the crab salad atop the bread at all (the crab didn't have any particular taste at all which lead me to believe that it was either canned or frozen).

Also, they brought out dishes at a break-neck speed (perhaps they thought we were going to riot if not) so it was kinda a hectic pace the entire night, though it did slow down the last 5 or so dishes.

Despite those missteps, everything else was just fantastic--from the skirt steak done perfectly medium rare, to the anchovies, to the squid ink pasta, to the egg-topped mushrooms, to the delectable scallops. And the desserts were yum-yum too; and yes, we ordered all three.

Their wine list was quite affordable and the tempranillo we tried that night was superb as was the refreshing cinnamon-infused sangria at the beginning of our meal. And the price was absolutely accurate for the amount of food we got and the mastery of the chef. We spent about $160/couple for everything--about 26 dishes with liquor, dessert, and coffee. And the service was great.

Fantastic night; fantastic spot; fantastic Fungry Foodies strike again!

Well, in her/his/their defence, though Pasadena is large, geographically, it certainly does feel like a small town.

That's how I feel about it and non-US people I know who go to, say, Old Towne for the first time get the same vibe. "Cute town" is what I hear more often than anything else.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. I mean, a lot of it does feel residential.

FUCK OFF ADULT BABIES.

It is much better to imagine The Fungry Foodies as a group of actual adult babies being escorted to a restaurant by their caretakers, settling into oversized highchairs loaded into the restaurant from an accompanying equipment van, wearing giant bibs and soiling themselves as they order every item on the menu, save three.

The Down And Out

I have to admit something.

I'm kinda dangerous.

That's right kids, this seemingly mild mannered (yet potty mouthed) teacher likes her peligro.

Guys with tattoos that carry knives, eating questionable sushi from shifty restaurants, driving in Alhambra...yup. I'm a regular bad ass.

So naturally, I like the Down n Out. With mug shots on the walls and Jameson shots at the bar, it's the perfect spot for a seeker of all things dangerous to spend a few hours getting dangerously intoxicated with a group of other dangerous downtowners.

I'd tell you to come down and shoot some pool or kick it on the newly alcohol free patio (because the people drinking outside were so dangerous, the bar got their permit yanked...see? Baaaaad!) but I don't think you can hang.

Pussy.
