I was in Big Sur just a few days ago.

Ten Packs for me, the other sample is too obvious and All 4 the Money is already one of my favorite tracks ever so it's impossible to overwrite that.

How is this one?
I like Gibbs a ton but his fill lengths of the last few years haven't done it for me for some reason

production on this is kinda boring :/
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 14 March 2014 01:14 (ten years ago) link
Yeah this is just barely OK to me. Shitsville and Real are the standouts but I like ESGN better as a full length.
― Spottie, Monday, 17 March 2014 23:00 (ten years ago) link
i dug 'cold day in hell' but 'esgn' grabbed me zero at the time. he still gets outsparkled by his guests, but i think madlib sort of autopiloting the production is ok, it's got stuff going on to complement gibbs' gruff monotone.
― j., Monday, 17 March 2014 23:09 (ten years ago) link
cold day in hell is the best of the last few years yeah. esgn has Eastside Moonwalker, FAME, DOA, Ten Packs of Backwoods and 9mm which were all very good.
I guess i just expected Madlib not to autopilot on this.
― Spottie, Monday, 17 March 2014 23:12 (ten years ago) link
so did i for some reason, but oh well
i don't really know what i want from gibbs, i think just srs raps, it can get kind of exhausting to be endlessly on the hunt for fresh style or a bearable persona and beatmaking innovation. i can't really think of a super positive way to put that, though.
― j., Monday, 17 March 2014 23:20 (ten years ago) link
closing track is p awesome

Is that the track that ends with Mac miller making a billy Madison reference in 2014
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 18 March 2014 00:32 (ten years ago) link
It all seems really stale. I think the label was in sample clearance hell for a while because they've been sitting on a lot of these tracks. A majority of the times I've seen madlib these past few yrs, Gibbs has come out and been pretty boring so I didn't have high hopes for this, but the production is wayyy more uninteresting than I thought it would be.

when i think of gibbs i often think of this etahn p post
"Flint Town" by Dayton Family
at least i think i do, can't read it to check whether i'm remembering it right, think it has this great description of listening to the same thing every day back and worth walking to work, getting deep into this kinda boring no frills record

― out comes stanley, Monday, 24 March 2014 20:35 (ten years ago) link
I love this album, if the production is Madlib on autopilot then he def needs to stay on autopilot.
― xelab, Wednesday, 26 March 2014 16:01 (ten years ago) link
production is certainly more interesting than the rapping but yeah, echoing everyone's comment that this feels like a RAP ALBUM without being necessarily worthy of great praise or insult and while totally listenable it's difficult to care deeply about

Freddie was good! had nice stage presence and energy but it was kind of adorable how he kept looking at his watch nervously, realizing how much time he had left. got him to sign my ESGN shirt afterwards, very nice guy, took time to meet all the fans.
Tech N9ne actually put on a real good show but I knew like 2 of the songs - have like 5 of his albums yet he managed to do mostly stuff I didn't know, despite this. still, he's a good showman, even if yr not into his devilesque speed rap thing.

First I heard it of it but then I’m just struggling to keep my head above water so I’m no kind of gauge of clout.
In honor of Freddie Gibbs' long-awaited major label debut dropping tomorrow, @Willydasquid ranks every album in the Gary legend's discography. I don't personally agree with the order, but let the arguing commence. https://t.co/AkGJB1AeQe— Otto Von Biz Markie (@Passionweiss) September 29, 2022

Yeah was not aware he finally got another shot at a major label release, and this time it's out! Looking forward to hearing it but surprised some of the early Warner singles are not on the album. Special Editions will be coming no doubt.

Gah Joe Rogan cameo wtf. Sadly I read that before I listened to the release, then I listened to that James Blake-produced number — just awful, they both phoned it in. Or quite possibly James Blake ran out of ideas long ago.

So anyway that’s as far as I got so far. Maybe I need a palate cleanser or just some time to reflect and I will be ready to give it a go.

not freddie’s best by a long shot, i liked both pre-release singles more than anything that actually made this
also completely disagree with the passion of the weiss list, cold day in hell is way too low
