Marc New York City NYT Pick

The President understates the issue because he must try to explain but not inflame. His experience with being followed, or having similar types of encounters, is common for black men and it permeates our lives. I am an older black manager in an office in Lower Manhattan, not threatening in size or demeanor (and I even wear a tie), but I have been followed in stores, twice accused of stealing (while I was on my way to the register to pay for goods), refused service in a restaurant, told by security guards that I alone could not stand on a well known public plaza in Midtown, received irrational hostility from police, etc., etc. I had the police called on me when I was taking a picture, from a well-populated public park in Queens, of a sunset framed by the NYC skyline --the caller suggested I was taking photos for terrorist purposes with my average Canon SLR--and the police came and questioned me as a result. None of this makes sense. I don't share this stuff often with my white co-workers because they don''t believe it. But black males, many of whom have endured far more (such as my older brother), can trade endless stories. Protest is almost futile. Any miscalculated response can lead to our being arrested or worse, just because. The President was just dropping a hint, telling black citizens he understands, knowing that there is great skepticism, or outright acceptance of such conditions, by his white constituency.

the positive way to think about this is that if the president's comments hadn't provoked any racist bullshit, that would have meant they weren't useful

the "reasonable man" as applied in stand your ground cases has become a solipsist, encased in his own universe, "reasonably" obeyant to his own paranoias and prejudices. Hallucinations and motes in one's eye now justify slaying someone in self-defense. Who needs a panopticon when all that matters is what's in your head?

And team and ideology and brand and national and 'racial' loyalty are the only things most people can be bothered about

Sharpton should be indited for federal hate crimes. Zimmerman is a good guy and willing to help people. He took a black girl to the school prom and mentors young black men and even, dare I say, voted for Obama which in my opinion was a big mistake.

I don't know what happened the night Trayvon Martin was killed and I don't care. All I know is I'd rather have a George Zimmerman walking around than a Trayvon Martin.

Trayvon would have robed them blind and left.

Traygone would have tried to sell them the weed he was growing and after they bought it would have robbed them. Martins a hero, so glad a known gangbanging thug like Traygone is off the streets for GOOD.

http://hnn.us/articles/roots-white-rage

Amidst all the ink that has been spilled this week regarding the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin, a disturbing theme has emerged. Whether talking about Zimmerman's individual mindset, or the mindset of the Florida legislators who passed the now-infamous Stand Your Ground (SYG) law, or the mentality of white Americans in general with regard to young black men, the idea that fear is at the heart of the matter has emerged as a popular explanation for Martin's murder. However, there is another emotion with perhaps even greater historical valence for understanding these events: rage.

Take, for instance, Zimmerman's own words to the 911 operator the day of the killing. "Assholes" and "f*cking punks" were the words he used to describe the person he was following. Those words denote anger and resentment but not fear. Zimmerman only indicated he was afraid of Martin after he had killed him.

I grew up in the Chicago suburb where Drew Peterson lived and worked.

A high-school friend just posted on Facebook:

"Drew Peterson, an ACTUAL cop, once responded to a car accident I was in. Then he murdered 2 of his wives."

this is all from a report from "newsball.com", who are also on a weird witch hunt to expose the names/identities of the six jurors? idk man

arby's, Saturday, 27 July 2013 16:24 (ten years ago) link

It's true that this is all only on alternative sites so who knows but on the other hand, people willingly ate up the original story despite it being iffy and somewhat contradicted by the 911 tapes.

What i find disgusting are all the folks who seemed to think this 'cancelled' his previous deeds.

i do think its interesting that after the first juror came out and appeared to be a p serious 'supporter' of Z, several other jurors and said they didn't share her thinking, and that the latest one to come out says 'we all felt in our hearts he was guilty,' like to have been a fly on that deliberation room wall
