i was a suit & tie + mirrors stand on the ground floor, i can't find anything to love about this ... yet

i guess everybody else is also trying to work in a subterranean homesick blues joke
but nobody has figured one out yet
Tunnel Visions hasn't even been sent to radio according to Billboard.

xp i don't think 22 "tanked". maybe underperformed compared to the other two pop singles, but i think it went top 20 and i heard it plenty on the radio. not a huge seller, but not embarrassing either.
― dyl, Saturday, 13 July 2013 04:21 (ten years ago) link
iTunes says I've listened to TBTN 18 times now today. Once again, ILX, you are wrong.
Seems incredibly bizarre to release something that will certainly curtail the performance of (the actually joyless) "Tunnel Vision" at this moment.

i was thinking Love Actually actually
a Swift pop radio single missing the top 10 is kinda tanking! but w/e.

“We tried to contact him through his website and got no answer,” she said. “Then we sent him a letter Friday from our legal counsel saying ‘You used our name without our permission.’ They got back to us and said they’re sorry. His agent said ‘Justin’s a good guy! He’s a family man!’ They claimed he’d never heard of us before he wrote that song. I don’t know what country he’s been in. I suppose it could have slipped off his radar screen somehow. Somebody working for him definitely messed up.”

it's just funny because i wonder whether the phrase would even pop into your head unless you'd heard the name of the organization somewhere. obviously it's 4 perfectly common words that fit together, but i've never heard anyone say 'take back the night' in any other context ever.

I've got a writer acquaintance who's loathed Timberlake since he thought Timberlake got off easy after the Super Bowl fandango; he's been chortling all day.

mirrors is much, much cornier than what goes around... it's basically an 'n sync song. far less stately and original, epic template or not.
tunnel vision on the other hand is definitely one of my favorites on the album. neither joyless nor cloying, it's the right balance btw light and dark.
― surm, Sunday, 14 July 2013 22:26 (ten years ago) link
even now when I'm hearing it four times a day on the radio "Mirrors" still sounds bloated by endless verses and choruses.

i doubt much of anything is going to come from this... he probably will issue a statement but it's not like they're gonna pull the song from radio or anything. they still play ross' date rap verse.

I didn't suggest this will bury him. He's a slippery guy with shrewd PR skills. He'll survive. But a straight singer playing with tired ideas about nudity and exposure is gonna be in the crosshairs for a while.

if he just issues an apology and doesn't drag it out everyone will move on immediately to whatever the next controversy is
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 14 July 2013 23:06 (ten years ago) link
i mean there are a LOT of different activist-type groups out there, anytime you don't use any funky unique language in a song title the odds are the phrase has been trademarked by somebody somewhere, it's not totally insane to just have it brought up at first and assume oh, that's some tiny organization nobody's heard of. just pretty unfortunate given the tone of the song itself and the whole running theme of pop music controversies this year.
― king of steens (some dude), Sunday, 14 July 2013 23:07 (ten years ago) link
for myself, I wish he'd had a new album to promote before the Superbowl appearance to see if he would've suffered a "backlash" like Jackson did.

not even from a progressive perspective, I mean but sheer must not get into legal trademarking trouble perspective
(other option: it's trolling. it's juuuuust plausible enough, just enough on the nose.)

i have to believe nobody would troll like that on purpose, there's no upside, it's not even funny on a 'yeah, i meant to do that' level
― king of steens (some dude), Sunday, 14 July 2013 23:43 (ten years ago) link
TBTN foundation can consider all the lawsuits they want but they're highly unlikely to file and certainly won't win if they do. They didn't invent the phrase, and their registered trademark affords certain very specific protections, of which controlling whether or not the phrase appears in a work of art is not one.
Good PR move though and I'm glad they're making the most of the opportunity.

Timberlake & Jay-Z's joint show in London last night was pretty spectacular. The only lull came during Pusher Love (end already!) and the very boring Take Back the Night. But hearing him sing the hooks on Heart of the City and I Just Wanna Love U, or drop a verse of I Want You Back over Izzo, was damn fine.

― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 15 July 2013 12:15 (ten years ago) link
Jay-Z/JT are the first concert at the Ravens' stadium since U2 a couple years ago -- my editor called me a few hours before U2 hit the stage and asked me if I wanted to cover the show, so i'm still laboring under the unrealistic hope that that could happen with this show.
