that entire outro is incredibly sublime though

my point is that dude's lyrics have been fantastically dumb from the start

good point

I can see us holding hands
Walking on the beach, our toes in the sand
I can see us on the countryside
Sitting on the grass, laying side by side
You could be my baby, let me make you my lady
Girl, you amaze me
Ain't gotta do nothing crazy
See, all I want you to do is be my love

J0rdan S., Friday, 12 July 2013 18:02 (ten years ago) link

This must be, pop

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 12 July 2013 18:02 (ten years ago) link

i think one can be aware of the fact that JT has always been a ridiculous goober and still note these lyrics are a cut above in the absurdly clueless appropriation dept

da croupier, Friday, 12 July 2013 18:04 (ten years ago) link

which is why I've always found his transformation into futuresex/love god so transparently ridic

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 12 July 2013 18:05 (ten years ago) link

man, the chorus to "My Love" is downright pedestrian compared to the rest of this

"Post-Oven" (DJP), Friday, 12 July 2013 18:08 (ten years ago) link

yeah, there's nothing really wrong at all with those "My Love" lyrics

lady steendriver (The Reverend), Friday, 12 July 2013 18:10 (ten years ago) link

The next single will be a tribute to the rich history of hip-hop named "Rap Culture"

;_;

he is v pretty tbh

lex pretend, Friday, 12 July 2013 19:22 (ten years ago) link

like THAT is the least surprising aspect of it all

lex pretend, Friday, 12 July 2013 19:23 (ten years ago) link

the funny thing about JT's dumb lyrics is that he IS capable of self-awareness - see his entire "shades" verse! which is 100% corny punchlines but he delivers them with a nod and a wink because he totally knows they're dumb - but the dumbest of them, the "you're not green"/"i work at my job"/"my dick is a blueberry lollipop" ones, he sings so SINCERELY and SERIOUSLY

lex pretend, Friday, 12 July 2013 19:25 (ten years ago) link

my love lyrics are amazing, especially since the first time i met my boyfriend was on the beach with our toes in the sand

surm, Friday, 12 July 2013 19:41 (ten years ago) link

but the real masterpiece is obvii:

Ridin' in the drop top with the top down
Saw you switchin' lanes, girl
Pull up to the red light, lookin' right
Come on let me get your name, girl
Tell me where you from, what you do, what you like
Let me pick your brain, girl
And tell me how they got that pretty little face
On that pretty little frame, girl

surm, Friday, 12 July 2013 19:45 (ten years ago) link

he's the rare teen-bopper who's both kept his looks and (enough of the time) figured out how to make his boyishness work for him - less of the former, he'd be michael j fox, less of the latter he'd be JC Chasez

da croupier, Friday, 12 July 2013 19:45 (ten years ago) link

Michael J. Fox is in the lost looks side of the equation?

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 12 July 2013 19:48 (ten years ago) link

not like in a 'goddamn that's rough' way, i just mean when a teenybopper doesn't age into continued pin-up status

da croupier, Friday, 12 July 2013 20:03 (ten years ago) link

to be fair, he's 20 years JT's senior. who knows what Timberlake will look like in twenty years.

lady steendriver (The Reverend), Friday, 12 July 2013 20:04 (ten years ago) link

i meannn, yeah.

point being that justin t is still insanely hot at the moment

surm, Friday, 12 July 2013 20:05 (ten years ago) link

he looks like a salamander dressed as Justin Timberlake:

at least he ditched the terrible mane

lady steendriver (The Reverend), Friday, 12 July 2013 20:08 (ten years ago) link

trying to think of BOP fodder folks who were both hot and likeable at thirtysomething - Mark Wahlberg & Ryan Gosling, but the former had to sacrifice his music career at the alter of shame and the latter just does it in his spare time.

da croupier, Friday, 12 July 2013 20:11 (ten years ago) link

Not entirely sure if that heavily airbrushed pic fully demonstrate JC's lack of sex appeal next to JT.

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Friday, 12 July 2013 20:15 (ten years ago) link

OK. I've heard "Take Back the Night" twice in the last two hours on local top 40 radio. I guess "Tunnel Vision" hasn't a chance...?

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 13 July 2013 00:10 (ten years ago) link

well they probably sensed that

J0rdan S., Saturday, 13 July 2013 00:14 (ten years ago) link

at least "take back the night" sounds more like a single than the ones from part one

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Saturday, 13 July 2013 00:39 (ten years ago) link

yeah it's possible that all along the plan was to save more marketable songs for the 2nd album since the 1st was destined to do big numbers anyway just off anticipation/name recognition. would be smart, considering how when big acts release 2 albums a few months apart usually it's the latter that has a hard time gaining traction.

Picasso Birdman (some dude), Saturday, 13 July 2013 00:51 (ten years ago) link

i'm curious to see if part 2 follows the trend in that npr article or if it's coming out close enough to the huge overseller that the one after this (if there is one) will actually be the downslope of the curve

http://www.npr.org/blogs/therecord/2013/04/04/176269938/justin-timberlake-and-the-ac-dc-rule

J0rdan S., Saturday, 13 July 2013 00:53 (ten years ago) link

how is "tunnel vision" any less marketable than "what goes around" though. I mean I still hear the latter on radio, sometimes coda and all

although in retrospect the strategy here is p. clear: porn video for streaming hits, radio single for everything else

katherine, Saturday, 13 July 2013 00:55 (ten years ago) link

i could totally see "tunnel vision" being a hit at this point, dude seems totally unstoppable

"mirrors" sounded totally like the "what goes around" of this record to me though

J0rdan S., Saturday, 13 July 2013 00:58 (ten years ago) link

"Tunnel Vision" feels kind of like it's in a "My Love" template (to a milder degree than "Mirrors" was in the "What Goes" template), particularly now that it's a single and the videos are even kinda similar, nudity aside. but it's not remotely as immediate as "My Love," to say nothing of having T.I., etc.

Picasso Birdman (some dude), Saturday, 13 July 2013 00:58 (ten years ago) link

i'd say it's closest to "cry me a river" just in terms of the darkness/moodiness but yeah obviously not nearly the tune

J0rdan S., Saturday, 13 July 2013 01:01 (ten years ago) link

i'm still annoyed that they didn't at least send "Pusher Love Girl" to R&B stations

Picasso Birdman (some dude), Saturday, 13 July 2013 01:01 (ten years ago) link

yeah I don't doubt that because this is the peak of Justin's imperial phase we'll see both singles in the top ten

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 13 July 2013 01:05 (ten years ago) link

No Strawberry Bubblegum in London tonight? 0_o

piscesx, Saturday, 13 July 2013 01:06 (ten years ago) link

i kinda doubt that..."Take Back" is so plainly more accessible and all new and tied to a new album, "Tunnel Vision" could disappear without much notice

Picasso Birdman (some dude), Saturday, 13 July 2013 01:29 (ten years ago) link

Both are possible. My fondest wish is that both bomb.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 13 July 2013 01:36 (ten years ago) link

i'm curious how much the 'uh, that title' matter will bubble up as a major topic as the song gets out there

Picasso Birdman (some dude), Saturday, 13 July 2013 01:53 (ten years ago) link

Has his tour started yet? Shifting promo gears to the new album should sync up with that pretty well.

Incidentally, new Gaga single in August. Which means these dudes have to hustle before they have to get out of the way (maybe). Did Swift's "22" tank? I didn't hear that a single time on the radio.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 13 July 2013 01:59 (ten years ago) link

tour stars next week. funny that when it was announced, we knew of 1 new album between Jay and Justin this year, now there are 3.

Picasso Birdman (some dude), Saturday, 13 July 2013 02:02 (ten years ago) link

"22" pretty much did tank, yeah, thankfully.

Gaga could do well but it's not a given, nobody's afraid of her.

Picasso Birdman (some dude), Saturday, 13 July 2013 02:02 (ten years ago) link

She does tend to hog the spotlight.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 13 July 2013 02:29 (ten years ago) link

this new single is pretty joyless

乒乓, Saturday, 13 July 2013 02:36 (ten years ago) link

katherine, Saturday, 13 July 2013 02:44 (ten years ago) link

i was a suit & tie + mirrors stand on the ground floor, i can't find anything to love about this ... yet
