One of these dudes has a pretty significant drug problem that is not very secret, but they've just kicked him out of the band before. Makes me wonder what it would take for them to cancel dates?

Avey Tare seems to have a lot of throat issues.

Treeship, Friday, 12 July 2013 02:39 (ten years ago) link

Maybe his vocal chords are fxed up

Treeship, Friday, 12 July 2013 02:40 (ten years ago) link

"health reasons" or "family problems" always raise red flags

I don't think it should be required of anybody, but coming clean is a good look. I did like it when Fiona Apple cancelled a tour because her dog died.

I didnt know deakin had a drug problem before this thread. He was hilarious in concert because he wore the collar of his oxford shirt flipped up and would dance around while playing his guitar, in contrast to the other, more staid band members. My ex gf and i kept saying "deakmeister" "the deak" and "fuckin D" the whole concert. I miss her.

Treeship, Friday, 12 July 2013 03:54 (ten years ago) link

Anyway, everyone here knows i love this band and i wish them all the best.

seconded. I would like details on deakin too.

In this case though spazmatazz, i think the issue is avey's vocal chords because he has had laryngitis and complications from that over the past 8 months

Treeship, Friday, 12 July 2013 17:50 (ten years ago) link

ah ok. i wouldnt be surprised if the way he sings has damaged his voice already

The details are: Deakin doesn't do drugs. Or maybe he does!

that motherfuckin' Deak. just like the Deak to cancel a tour so he can get high. what a Deak.

Treeship, Friday, 12 July 2013 20:08 (ten years ago) link

i love Deakin.

i want Albert to come back and give us the deets on what he said before. or should i say the Deaks

Treeship, Friday, 12 July 2013 20:09 (ten years ago) link

i mean, like i said before, he was dressed in a risky business sort of way when i saw him in boston, with his collar flipped up. maybe they had to cancel the tour because he took a job at an investment bank.

Saw them live at roskilde. They managed to play ten songs in eighty minutes, lots of droning interludes. Started out with Moonjock and What Would I Want? Sky, which means that the first fifteen minutes was in 7/8. At that point most of the audience had sortof realised they weren't going to get a dance-party. The audience only livened up when they played My Girls and Brother Sport. It got really bad reviews, but I loved it. Sorta.

Frederik B, Monday, 15 July 2013 15:00 (ten years ago) link

Jealous you were in denmark. I studied abroad there and it's a great country.

Treeship, Monday, 15 July 2013 15:05 (ten years ago) link

I'm Danish. And yeah, it's quite great, though the summer-weather is rubbish. Roskilde was really fantastic this year, but I've never been to any other big festival, so I can't really compare it.

Frederik B, Monday, 15 July 2013 15:11 (ten years ago) link

I had to leave right before roskilde and i was devastated. Do you live in Copenhagen? Thats where I (predictably) was.

Treeship, Monday, 15 July 2013 15:14 (ten years ago) link

Yup. Well, technically Frederiksberg, but it's all Copenhagen to me. Where did you study, and what?

Frederik B, Monday, 15 July 2013 15:24 (ten years ago) link

I went to a school called the Danish Institute for Study Abroad for a semester, which is on Vestergade. All my classes were in English and were related to the humanities - philosophy, russian literature, art history and nordic mythology. My best class was on kierkegaard. I should have tried to learn at least a little danish but it didnt seem like there was enough time

Treeship, Monday, 15 July 2013 15:34 (ten years ago) link

Oh right, that sounds logical. I think it's a part of the University of Copenhagen, where I studied humanities as well, but still it's own thing.

Frederik B, Monday, 15 July 2013 16:26 (ten years ago) link

wait, deakin said the n-word??

i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Monday, 15 July 2013 18:28 (ten years ago) link

Yeah. And the worst part is, this most recent outburst earned him his own radio show.

Listening to Centipede Hz again. One more track until Amanita. Excited.

Treeship, Monday, 15 July 2013 23:04 (ten years ago) link

merriweather didn't speak much to me when it first came out but it's been a really spectacular part of my summer. what a wonderful hippie album, totally joyous. also is this the best appropriation of all those kompat pop ambient collections ever? i feel like all those sounds are such a part of MPP. i also pulled out person pitch again for the summer and it's really perfect.

centipede isn't speaking to me now, seems denser and inaccessible and without space. i've only given it a few listens though.

marcos, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 19:36 (ten years ago) link

i think centipede is more of an avey tare album and merriweather a panda bear one: the former is nervous and jittery and each of the songs seem to want to do a few different things as once. this is what i like about it, but i like merriweather too for the things that it does well.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:25 (ten years ago) link

Just to be sure: Dave Portner is Avey Tares real name, and Abigail Portner is his sister, who has made several of their album covers, right? They must be quite ugly shoes, then.

I hung my head in shame at the record store today, as I finally caved and bought the Prospect Hummer thingy with Vashti Bunyan (which is the reason I got it). I was totally amused that the spine credits the band as "AC." Teehee.

anyone else at the 9:30 show on monday? it was great, first time i've seen them play the Centipede stuff, which really came alive (especially "Father Time," which I didn't think much about beforehand). can't wait to see what they do next, together and individually! what an honor and a privilege to be around to see a legendary band in its prime!
