As I said on the last Gin Blossoms thread, these guys were really damn good for a radio rock singles band. "Allison Road" for the win. I guess I'd discuss it whenever it came up, I guess? Like if the guy's still currently touring with the band it'd probably come up quickly when they ask "what do you do for a living?".

i would not tell them for months and then when i told them make a huge deal out of it. "you thought, all this time that i was just a normal person. but actually, all this time, i have secretly been ROBIN WILSON. yes, THAT robin wilson. i will never forget that you showed me kindness while thinking i was a lowly, worthless nobody. never."

Treeship, Sunday, 7 July 2013 05:54 (ten years ago) link

i just went down an early 90's rabbit hole and remembered Live. Now, that would be a more embarassing admission yet I'm sure Ed Kowalczyk tells everyone he meets immediately who he is. Also, wiki tells me he is a giant crooked douche who weaseled his bandmates out of loads of money and now they're suing him.

"Mrs. Rita" and Marshall Crenshaw-penned "'Till I Hear It From You" also top-notch. Like Treeship said, nothing wrong with this band.

Jesus, Gin Blossoms fans are so defensive! I don't think I'd ever come out of the GB's closet, because I'm afraid people would pat me on the back and give me some patronizing fluff like, "you guys were really damn good for a radio rock singles band." and whenever they saw me in a bad mood, they'd try to cheer me up by saying, "stop feeling like you're a guilty pleasure or a one-hit wonder, because you're not." I just don't think I could deal with that.

(too bad I can't change my vote from "wait 10 years" "never tell anyone")

* "wait 10 years" to "never tell anyone"

all of the Gin blossoms albums are out of print. EXCEPT for the Rarities edition of New Miserable Experience, which is mostly outtake tracks and alternate versions.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 July 2013 13:26 (ten years ago) link

I can't imagine anyone reacting that way. Most people are really excited to know anyone with any connection to celebrity.

I wouldn't immediately drop that I was the lead singer of any somewhat-famous band; just not a good way to make an intro IMO.

This is OTM. I'd let it come up naturally.

Treeship also makes a good suggestion, though.

That was an xpost to unregistered.

I mean, "I was in the Gin Blossoms" sounds like it would be easier for the average acquaintance to relate to and appreciate than e.g. "I'm a new music composer".

Gin Blossoms played at Disney Food and Wine recently.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 July 2013 13:31 (ten years ago) link

they were actually well received, as far as those type of shows go

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 July 2013 13:33 (ten years ago) link

I still love that first album.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 7 July 2013 13:58 (ten years ago) link

I want people I've recently met to like me because they enjoy my company, not because they like clinging to famous people. I'd be plenty proud of being the lead singer of the GBs, but telling people that right away would attract fame/attention whores, not people who genuinely liked me. I like the story of how Lily Allen enjoyed frequently hanging out with her dad's friend "Uncle Joe" when growing up, whom she regarded as her godfather. She had no idea he was Joe Strummer.

I would be like "Hey, check it out. Remember all those bitchin' Arizona rock songs from the mid-90s that still give you chills as you drive through the desert at night? Well, I just sang them. But the guy who wrote them killed himself. That's how good they were. Can you watch my dog for a week?"

i would say the same things, president keyes. except if i were robin wilson, one of my affectations would be addressing everyone as "sexy".

"Hey Jealousy" is such a magnificent song.

Funny thread, this.

N/a. I'd say I was from Spacehog

I like the approach of saying you're in a different band, to open their mind to the possibility that you're in a band that was popular in the 90s, and then once they're comfortable with that, come totally clean about being in the Gin Blossoms.

had to bump thread just to point out that this is the most otm thing ever

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 15 July 2019 11:52 (four years ago) link

^^ yes, very otm.

also, "Hey Jealousy" is a great song, and as i've grown older, i've actually met a few people who could have been the dude singing. the "truth" of the experience being spoken to makes it an even better song imho.
