How do you prove you haven't committed crimes?

Neanderthal, Sunday, 23 June 2013 13:36 (ten years ago) link

Can't believe no one is interested in my citizenship game show or civics materials. Shocked!

One of the most challenging things about the classes were that they were levels 2-6 (higher levels not eligible bc the classes weren't usually necessary) so some people could barely utter a complete sentence in English while others were wondering why I was making them role play an emergency 911 call.

Does this sound like good times or what?!

ive never been in the united states but i got every question right except i mixed up the gettysburg address & declaration of independence quotes & got the flag year wrong

correctly guessing alito/breyer/kennedy involved guessing which ones looked vaguely italian/german/irish

there should be an equivalent Britishes one ... i wonder how many of us Americans would do as well on that as certain Brits have done on this poll.

the Britishes ones should be chockful of nothing but obscure Carry On references, of course.

there's a thread with the Britishes one on SNA and we all failed it

43, vs 54% on the UK, one, sadly good enough to be a US citizen but not a British one.

For real, though, I think it does.
Scored 46 points. Though if I'd have known it was 2 points for peaceful petition and writing criticism of government leaders, hell yeah I would've checked those.

54.

I recognised the Alamo, but only because it was the building Ozzy urinated on.

Should earn you extra points, imo.

haha, thanks crabbits! it was a pretty fun class. we did all kinds of weird stuff. i got a full time job right after that semester was over, but i have fond memories of explaining the differences between local, state, and federal governments (among other things).

their newspaper columnists talk about our politics, they watch our tv shows, that's already 9/10 of what makes americans know anything about u.s. citizenship

Huh. Never heard of this before. I er know of someone who's lived in the UK for 12 years and has never filed a US tax return in that time. They have a building society account rather than bank. Not sure if that makes any difference.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 10 February 2016 18:12 (eight years ago) link

i vaguely remember an american colleague filing her us taxes in canada years ago, but i didn't know the exact details. this man in a suit with a briefcase would show up at random times. "he's the irs man!" she exclaimed. he would come by every year to remind her that she had to submit her paperwork. like something out of a kafka story

F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 10 February 2016 18:57 (eight years ago) link

I have a U.S.-born U.K. facebook friend who brings this up every year around tax time. It's been giving her hell apparently.

A law that actually got passed following the 2010 elections is a fucking grease fire creating "unintended" consequences for ordinary working American citizens.

tom those are good links

i received a citizenship booklet with 100 questions and answers

it says i'll be asked 10 of those randomly but i've talked to five people that have had very different interviewing experiences (two didn't even get asked questions -- HUH)

I took it twice in two different browsers and it resets all the answers and doesn't give me a score. HOW WILL I EVER KNOW IF I'M A CITIZEN NOW?!??

My wife wasn't asked any questions when she went in. They just swore everybody in her group in. That was many years ago, though. Under Trump they'll probably ask you something in Spanish, and if you understand, you get deported to Mexico (no matter your actual country of origin).
