Heels - dud, ouch. I've tried and failed to wear them on many an occasion. When I practise walking in them around the house or try them in the shop I'm perfectly fine - as soon as I step outside I'm like Bambi on the ice.

Flats every time. Oh, and tights? DUD.

I like heels, but not for everyday.

Just Kate (papa november), Monday, 29 November 2004 10:31 (nineteen years ago) link

i always have to wear shoes with at least a little bit of height, or else i feel like a midget.

It took that long to become a picture thread. For shame.

Jesus Christ, Paraplegic (Mark C), Monday, 29 November 2004 11:00 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm pretty crap at wearing high heels (or any uncomfortable shoes, really). i've got a pair of 2.5" strappy sandals that i've now worn twice for 'events' and both times the balls of my feet were killing me within minutes, even using those 'party feet' insert things.

i suspect that it's just something that people get used to, but i've never been motivated enough to wear heels regularly. i'm tall enough that i tower over most people, so don't 'need' to wear them. i'm also too poor to take taxis everywhere, which i suspect would make girly shoes more practical for a night out.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 29 November 2004 11:01 (nineteen years ago) link

If I was a woman, I don't think I would wear them.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 29 November 2004 11:02 (nineteen years ago) link

The practicalities of high heel wear is lost on me, but from a male perspective, high heels are great. Doesn't matter what women wear, high heels make ladies sexier. Everything is improved (except maybe playing basketball).

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 29 November 2004 11:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I love heels, but heels don't love me :0(

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 29 November 2004 11:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I remember that basketball ad. It was for easy spirit high heels! "looks like a pump, feels like a sneaker"

I have a few high heels. I only wear them very rarely b/c of the towering over people thing. I love all the vintage-esque shoes this season, but couldn't wear most of them (besides not being able to find them in my size) because the heels are too tall. If they were 1/2 or maybe 3/4 of the height, that would be perfect.

sgs (sgs), Monday, 29 November 2004 12:37 (nineteen years ago) link

High heels hinder my dancing, so I don't wear them much anymore. I have some really nice ones though, it's a shame.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 29 November 2004 13:13 (nineteen years ago) link

High heels hinder my dancing, so I don't wear them much anymore.

This is a very good point - if you're wearing heels, you always end up doing that kind of dancing that involves minimal foot movements.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 29 November 2004 13:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't! But I've had lots of practice.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 29 November 2004 13:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Clearly, I need to practice more myself then :-)

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 29 November 2004 13:47 (nineteen years ago) link

i used "co-eds" because using alliteration can be fun, sometimes. i dont think ive ever referred to students in that form, ever. personally, i prefer the term "kids", especially some of the lunatics that are on this campus.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:04 (nineteen years ago) link

also, i was not joking about heels and jeans. perhaps YOU dont like them lucy, but for a lot of people they look really nice. its just a shame that various folks wear horrible jeans and fuck the look up.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:05 (nineteen years ago) link

thats definately a classic look madchen, but for me those heels are way too high. just like a lot of people on here, ive got foot problems [thank you, competitive figure skating!], so i cant wear anything too high. plus, the higher the heel, the more it makes me think of foot binding, for some reason. and i dont like that.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:07 (nineteen years ago) link

earl jeans dark rinse w/ a very slight flare are good for the heel/jean look.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I kind of agree with Di. I have rarely seen the heels/jeans look carried off particularly well.

Just Kate (papa november), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Am I a freak? I wear heels to work a lot, 3" ones, and with jeans. I have ankle problems but I still wear 'em anyway. I don't think heels/jeans is not as silly as those kitten heel flip flops that were out this summer.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Leeeee why were you wearing heels?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:38 (nineteen years ago) link

i think a cute pair of trainers or kinky boots are much sexyer

lukey (Lukey G), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:45 (nineteen years ago) link

"is not"="are"

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I love heels, but then I'm only 5'2" and a lot of my friends are tall, so it has some practical application.

Heels with jeans is so widespread in Britian I would never even have considered commenting on it.

I love them. They do make me feel sexy, true, but more because they acentuate the way you move your hips than any idea of domination (this is a wearers view, not a watchers). But I will wear heels for job interviews or any other situation where I need to feel in control. I need the extra height, I don't like people, both literally and metaphorically, talking down to me.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 29 November 2004 16:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Classic.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 29 November 2004 17:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I was wearing them to complete my outfit!

Leeenge de Bruijn (Leee), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:33 (nineteen years ago) link

They are kind of sexy, but that's more because of the kinky submissive impracticality than any intrinsic aesthetic thing.

Not true. The effect they produce on a woman's walk is sexy, and they make one's calves and ass look better.

oops (Oops), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Do you *know* what they're doing to said calves, and back muscles/spine so you guys get to perv on that walk? Ay yi yi.

Gem I hope I didnt offend you btw! I wasnt suggesting you were a fake tan blonde!!! :/ Its just thats all I see around where I live - those awful jeans with the HUGE rolled up cuffs, and white pumps under it. Uuuugh.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 29 November 2004 23:42 (nineteen years ago) link

I have extremely, dementedly high foot arches. My mom used to call my feet "Barbie doll feet". Shoes with some heel tend to hurt me a lot less than flats. Flats that are not really padded sneakers press out my arch sometimes, if I do anything besides pretty delicate walking--I fall more in them and it causes pins and needles sometimes in my feet.

So, yeah, I can see why someone would say 3" heels are much more comfortable than flats.

Why would someone roll their jeans if they're wearing heels with them???? Trayce, I think you live in Madness City! I've only seen women, including myself, wear quite long jeans with heels, unrolled*; I think if I saw them all rolled up I'd be a bit scared too.

* this is untrue, some girls put on those capris and the heels but I'm wholly against capris anyway so I will not defend this look ever.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Monday, 29 November 2004 23:46 (nineteen years ago) link

YOu should only roll your jeans if you are rolling cigarettes into the cuffs. Or you are Mary Tyler Moore and it's the 70s.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 November 2004 23:52 (nineteen years ago) link

What if I'm Scott Bakula and I'm just inhabiting MTM's body for an episode?

oops (Oops), Monday, 29 November 2004 23:53 (nineteen years ago) link

What if you're Sally Fields and it's the 60s?

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Monday, 29 November 2004 23:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Then you should only sport this look while doing the frug.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 November 2004 23:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Since we're speaking of really bizarre jeans and shoes situations, what is with the people who wear really high boots that AREN'T galoshes and tuck their jeans into it? This is especially bad when they buy bootcut or flare jeans (ie like 99% of jeans that seem to be available these days???) and try to shove them in, cos it gets all bunchy. I've seen girls in thigh high boots with jeans on, underneath! It makes me think of Robin Hood.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:00 (nineteen years ago) link

i don't believe this really happens! it sounds amazing!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:02 (nineteen years ago) link

If you must rock the fuck-me-boots, you must do so in a fuck-me-skirt.

That is the law.

Only if the fuck-me skirt is tucked into the fuck-me boots.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I dont know what madness is bids to tear my 'hood in twain, as it were, but seriously I keep seeing these jeans with a fat folded up cuff, like not rolled up, but one big folded up bit. Oh lordy it looks ridiculous.

I guess I can see how elegant pinstriped slacks or bootleg jeans could look ok with a heel. I think heels look good in the right way too, I have to say. I just cant wear them, for aforementioned podiatric spazmo feet reasons :(

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:03 (nineteen years ago) link

See, that doesn't make a lick of sense

OMG bootleg jeans tucked into boots!? That is insanity central.

I like CFMs, I have to confess, though I dont wear them all that often cos I get paranoid someone will think I'm a prossy.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I refuse to wear my thigh high boots with anything but a skirt, the other way lies madness and forestry adventures and possibly mud bogging.

...and not at all a good time

I think the people tucking bootcut pants into their boots just like the lumpy calf look. "Hey baby, check out my sexy lower-leg bulges; they are like King Kong's varicose veins, only SEXIER!"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 00:06 (nineteen years ago) link

i think the boot tucking is part of the whole "hippy / folk" revival that seems to be all the rage with kids these days.

bell_labs, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:09 (sixteen years ago) link

bell labs, it has been a hard and somewhat costly lesson to learn, but to buy any shoe that is not your size or does not fit well is foolhardy. You'll hardly ever wear them and when you do it will be a hell.
