Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (at least for the first 3/4ths of the game), and Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas all have interesting quest solutions for characters with strong speech skills.

Think we might almost be getting close to it being okay to re-do this. Maybe in another year or two. Dom's ''each person gets one nom per decade'' really squeezed out some faves to the point where we had to have a secondary poll of flagrantly overlooked games (e.g. SFII). On the other hand, plenty of beloved cult-favorite stuff DID get nommed but still got no votes so maybe it was fine...

That list needs more Castlevania and Mega Man games.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 28 May 2013 05:23 (ten years ago) link

Thanks for the recommendations, One Way Street! I've previously read positive comments on Planescape: Torment and Arcanum, but I'm not sure if I can handle the isometric (is that the correct word?) graphics and old-school RPG gameplay... Maybe I'll try them one day, though. As for Vampire the Masquerade, I'm kinda averse to vampire stuff in general, and the VtM franchise in particular, so I'm not sure I want to play that one.

So yeah, I'd still love to hear recommendations on newer (i.e. ones with 3D graphics) fantasy RPGs where fighting is not the only option.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 08:29 (ten years ago) link

Action adventure game (a la Zelda or Psychonauts) recommendations are welcome too.

one year passes...

i think we're due to redo this poll.

I'd endorse that, it's been a reasonably long time and it might be interesting to see how things roll witha different nom system/ballot size. I'd vote, for sure, with the caveat that I haven't *played* that many additional games since 2008!

I'd be down. I'd almost prefer, though, to see the results as applied to just this century. The older results seem fairly predictable and are likely to just show up again in a slightly different order.

Ronald Raisins (Old Lunch), Monday, 26 January 2015 21:03 (nine years ago) link

I dunno, I could see them being different. The weird "balanced decade" ballot meant that a lot of much-beloved older things were actually not eligible. OTOH this probably gave rise to some of the most interesting quirks (aka British games I'd never heard of before). There's also the factor of ILX membership turnover and some generational shifting. Still, I get where you're coming from - the 'canon' is more set for the 80s and 90s.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 26 January 2015 21:13 (nine years ago) link

gtfo with separate super mario entries but "championship manager series" "pro evolution series" imo

local eire man (darraghmac), Monday, 26 January 2015 21:23 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, no idea how I'd handle that if I were pollrunner though, like clearly a vote for SM64 is not the same as a vote for Super Mario Bros. The funny thing is you'd think it would lead to vote-splitting but then like EVERY Mario game placed! I guess I'd like to see no consolidations of series, but lots of horse-trading and backroom deals in the voting thread as fans of the hundreds of low-res Hop To It, Cricket Boy! games decide which one to vote for.

Re: lumping series, I'm happy to go with whatever seems liek the popular option. Personally I'd say case-by-case and determined during the nominations.

Honestly don't see how lumping ~5-10 completely discrete games released over 30 years makes as much sense to you as ~20 games released annually with incremental changes, but if you wanna vote-split CM97 vs CM03 vs FM08 vs etc etc etc into oblivion I guess it's yr life.

shit's obviously artisanal (Will M.), Monday, 26 January 2015 21:47 (nine years ago) link

Like, a non-franchise poll would be cool. Nothing that has more than maybe one sequel or spin-off.

Ronald Raisins (Old Lunch), Monday, 26 January 2015 21:50 (nine years ago) link

I mean, we all know that everybody likes Mario and stealing cars in various cities.

Ronald Raisins (Old Lunch), Monday, 26 January 2015 21:51 (nine years ago) link

I think by decade would be better.

Also, I'd love to see a mobile games poll. Thinking just iOS/Android/etc.

Decades is a pretty interesting idea. Wonder if making several separate ballots would intimidate some people out of playing along, or alternately encourage participation in certain decades by people who otherwise wouldn't bother.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 26 January 2015 23:36 (nine years ago) link

Decades seems like a weird way to split it, at least to me. I kinda prefer generations? (I did a PS2 poll some time ago, I should've included Xbox...)

This was a really bizarre list. No fighting games either, which is kind of understandable because they usually tend to blur into series rather than stand on their own.

Everyone thought someone else was going to burn their one '90s pick on Street Fighter II, but it turned out there were a lot of good games made in the 1990s.

somebody start a nomination thread for video games of the 80's plz

Sounds like a forks display name (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 01:25 (nine years ago) link

I still like generations -- question is, would we start at 1? 2? (3 is where everyone's a renaissance person i think, probably a lot more response on best NES vs best Atari 2600)

(and all 80s = good luck atari 2600)

The handhelds hold roughly similar generations as well (DS vs PSP, 3DS vs Vita). The problem of course is that the PC doesn't really care - so where does a game released before the last PS3 title but after the first PS4 count? And that's not counting staggered console release dates.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 11:41 (nine years ago) link

Hmm maybe decades is just the best way to do it then. Until '89, 90-99, 00-09?

shit's obviously artisanal (Will M.), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 15:39 (nine years ago) link

or make best-computer-games its own category? 1/2gen, 3,gen, 4gen, ... & computer games

shit's obviously artisanal (Will M.), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 15:39 (nine years ago) link

I like mixing everything together but I'll go with whatever

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 15:43 (nine years ago) link

I understand that this would probably be a totally separate thing, but it'd also be cool to see a poll by genre.

Ronald Raisins (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 15:53 (nine years ago) link

I really see no reason to segregate computer games off in their own space, just reduces turnout in every poll as people may not feel they have enough of a stake to throw in on any given individual poll. Plus, a lot of work for the poll-runner etc.

If they need to be broken down, decades makes more sense - you'll catch people who were gaming a lot at a certain moment in time, regardless of how they split their time between arcade/console/computers. Plus, then the results feel more like a comparison among peers, which could be more interesting - - - ranking Zelda vs. Mario 3 is meaningful in a way that ranking Asteroids vs. Half-Life 2 might not be.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 16:41 (nine years ago) link

however we do it can we have a lot of votes on our ballots? esp for games i'm gonna be bummed if i only get like 25 spots.

Mordy, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 17:53 (nine years ago) link

just throw everything together, if the kids can't deal with the fact that games were better back in my day then fuck em

Unforgivable!

No offense to Rygar, but there is no way it would have made it on my ballot had Street Fighter 2, any Sim City, DOOM, or Ms. Pac-Man been available.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 18:02 (nine years ago) link

I love that it went :

100-7. other games
6. Team Ico game
5. Katamari game
4. GTA game
3. GTA game
2. Katamari game
1. Team Ico game

And their combined scores wouldve been
3. GTA games, 280 (incl. gta3)
2. Katamari games, 294
1. Team Ico games, 303

hmm maybe, in the context of ps2 i can't imagine they'd move far from the top...

shit's obviously artisanal (Will M.), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 18:41 (nine years ago) link

six months pass...

dang it yall, i am seriously considering running an X360+PS3+Wii "seventh generation" ILX poll just so i can think more and talk more about mgs4. i'm reviving this thread because the conversation kinda died, but i like games and rankings and shit.

i'm also into running previous gens polls too...
6: ps2/xbox/dreamcast/gamecube, even though we did ps2 already it'd be worth a redo including the xbox and gc and especially the DC
5: ps1/n64/saturn/jaguar?/3do?
4: snes/genesis/neo geo/tg16 (this one would be v popular... did we ever do this?)
3: nes/master system/7800?

the original issue with the generation method is that it became murky when to include PC games. easy fix: no pc games. we could do a separate thing for pc games at some point.

an october rollout for one of these would be pretty fun, what is up ILX can we do it?!
