I know this is hardly the most important aspect of all this shit which is coming out, but at this rate it'll be nigh on impossible to have any kind of jolly nostalgic 'weren't the 70s great?' programme as just about everything from that era is becoming tainted.

As i said upthread, wonder which of today's celebrities will be getting arrested 30 years from now
― Bees Against Racism (Tom D.), Thursday, 2 May 2013 13:24 (eleven years ago) link
I don't think it necessarily projects that way, even taking into account intimidation and fear of not being believed, people are probably more likely to go to the police now than in the 70s and 80s. Even if they aren't, it's unlikely to take 30 years.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 2 May 2013 13:27 (eleven years ago) link
i thought all these old scrotes would get away with it, due to it being so long after the fact and the grim stats about sex crime convictions. kinda shocking, but good, that stuart hall has fallen - means it all can't be spun into a 'this whole post-savile investigation was a waste of time/witchhunt'
― NI, Thursday, 2 May 2013 20:45 (eleven years ago) link
I can't imagine the horror that some of these victims have endured and survived. The double whammy of your rapist/abuser on the television in your living room after already infiltrating your life. A lot of my family suffered in state care in Dublin in the 50's. It's all the same I suppose, 50's catholic priests/70's television presenters. Just another case of state collusion with various sick fucks.
― Jason Dowd, Thursday, 2 May 2013 21:40 (eleven years ago) link
so very sick of this sudden 'hall wishes to apologise to his victims' crap. where were your apologies 40 years ago?

I'm pretty sure when I read that article yesterday there was a reference to an MP who is now a peer who was allegedly his accomplice. Presumably that's now been removed for legal reasons.

lol ignoramus from the usa here but is this all tangentially related to jimmy saville in some way that i don't understand, some revelations tied to what they discovered w/r/t him?
― christmas candy bar (al leong), Monday, 6 May 2013 21:53 (eleven years ago) link
What they uncovered seems to be at minimum a culture of looking the other way at the national broadcaster, and at worse a sustained culture of grooming within said broadcaster.
Tarby was at a different network though, so it looks like the inquiry has moved onto a stage where they are more looking at whether tv celebrities during the 70s as a whole were exploiting their fame to rape kids and taking overlooked victims' claims seriously, finally, nearly 40 years on.

Now even a deputy speaker of the House of Commons is accused of male rape. This is an unfortunate consequence of the present mania for policing all aspects of personal life under the mantra of ‘child protection’.
