Yeah, that's a great list. And same here, Dillinger's a solid #2 in my books now.
If there's one exclusion from the Decibel list I was most disappointed by, it would be the Angelic Process.

Took a look at the Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles list...it's the usual, half good, half stubbornly claccicist. Top five is Megadeth, Symphony X, Down, Machine Head, and Nightwish.
But it goes to show just how strong the year was, that BW&BK's top 66 is so completely different from Decibel's, yet I like a lot of their choices. Though Decibel really caters more to my interests these days...maybe I'm biased.

haha i only put 20 on because i haven't decided on any real order yet. one could actually say that i'm overcompensating for something like small penis size or inadequate knowledge of metal.

― Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:09 (2 years ago) Permalink
OK, here's 20, which was surprisingly not difficult to come up with:
1. Baroness - the Red Album 2. Arch Enemy - Rise of the Tyrant 3. Machine Head - The Blackening 4. Hacride - Amoeba 5. Maylene and the Sons of Disaster - II 6. Symphony X - Paradise Lost 7. Phazm - Antebellum Death 'n' Roll 8. Novembers Doom - The Novella Reservoir 9. Rush - Snakes and Arrows 10. Dethklok - The Dethalbum 11. Earthless - Rhythms from a Cosmic Sky 12. DHG - Super Villain Outcast 13. Municipal Waste - the Art of Partying 14. Alchemist - Tripsis 15. Bullets and Octane - Song for the Underdog 16. Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the Omniscient 17. The 69 Eyes - Angels 18. High On Fire - Death Is This Communion 19. Dimmu Borgir - In Sorte Diaboli 20. Slough Feg - Hardworlder
― Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:16 (2 years ago) Permalink
That isn't in any particular order, although now that I'm looking at it, I liked a lot of the stuff in my bottom 10 more than my top 10, so I may have to do some rearranging... it's pretty fun to look at the sheer differences in each of our lists.
― Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:21 (2 years ago) Permalink
Yeah, absolutely. And I'm a little worried that I haven't given Alchemist enough of a fair shake.
― Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:26 (2 years ago) Permalink
I liked the Alchemist album more than the general critical consensus, so it's possible that I'm in the minority in loving it. Doesn't mean that I don't still love it, though.
― Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:33 (2 years ago) Permalink
I wish anyone else had heard Vulture Industries, because the singer is excellent (James Hetfield vs. Ian Astbury vs. Norwegian accent) and the songs are tricky and powerful. I also haven't actually heard from anyone else who's listened to The Big Dirty, but GOD DAMN that record has a hold on my heart.
― Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:44 (2 years ago) Permalink
Fulcher Industries sounds cool, might have to look into them. Not a big Every Time I Die fan, though. Also, I just listened through the Pig Destroyer, and while it certainly has its merits, I don't quite feel the same love for it that everyone else seems to have. Of course, my list probably isn't winning me any credit points, so...

Cool lists. Personally, I had a tough time keeping mine below 50. I liked way, way too much stuff this year...I can't see how 2008 will even come close to measuring up.
― A. Begrand, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:22 (2 years ago) Permalink
Yeah but (unlike me) you actually know what you're talking about!
― Dimension 5ive, Thursday, 13 December 2007 02:12 (2 years ago) Permalink
Knowing what you're talking about is not necessarily a prerequisite for writing about music. Hell, I think I know what I'm talking about maybe 13% of the time.

I haven't heard the Trelldom yet. It's not like the country of Norway was idle or anything in 2007. mayhem, manes, DHG, a fucking killer red harvest album, er, there are no doubt plenty more where that came from. probably too commercial for siegbran, the everloving purist.
my favorite norwegian album of the year was probably:
16 – Tharaphita – Iidsetel Sunkjatel Radadel
except it was from Estonia.
