I got a postcard back from Paul Theroux from Hong Kong in early '87, I realised later that he must have been on the journey which formed Riding the iron rooster. Of course I've lost it.

I really should write to a few other people, if only to say how much I admire their work, since when they're gone it'll be a bit late.

claudia gonson is super nice. really.
also, i was very happy to see that my admired howe gelb is also a very nice gentleman. so is ken stringfellow.
oh, and damon and naomi are the sweetest couple i've ever met (i think i already said that on the g500 thread)...

Tim Quirk from Too Much Joy sent me an xmas card when I was a junior or senior in high school.

I had sent a short letter to the band telling them I really liked their music and found it disturbing and comforting that my over-identifying with as upper middle class white suburb kids was probably completely accurate and as such would actually bug them. (They've got liner notes to that effect as well. Something like "Note to guys with bands just like ours: Cool. Keep the faith. Just don't come backstage and tell us about it. We'd rather meet your girlfriends.")

He described each member of the band briefly so I could figure out which one I over-identified with most. I chose him, as he described himself as "The kind of guy who writes xmas cards to someone he's never met."

piscesboy: if you live in the US, there is a NTSC VHS of Distant Voices, Still Lives that shouldn't be too hard to find. I don't know where to look if you're in the UK. Maybe contact the BFI? The films were shot two years apart, I thought.

I've been having spatterings of correspondence with comedians like Louis CK, Marc Maron, and, uh, no one else. I think there's someone else, but maybe oh yeah, how could I forget, Steven Wright.
Quite a few music people, like musicians, but I don't really count that, since it's sort of work-related.
Anyway, most of the correspondence goes like this:

Dear So-and-So Funnyman,

Please give me a job. I lie in a horrible place and I get treated like dirt at work. So anything you can offer me would be great. Especially if somehow it involves me driving a hot rod.
yrs truly,
H.Mann

their reply:

Dear Mr. Mann,

I represent Mssrs Rickles and Cosby, and at their behest I must ask that you cease and desist your campaign of harrassment and intimidation. Any further correspondence from you will be considered as "threatening" and passed on to the appropriate authorities.

Sincerly,
F. Barnsworth Wadsfellow, LLB

PS, Enclosed is an autographed 8"X10" of your mom naked.

Second that. Haha, I just remembered why I met them--they were playing in Montreal and they asked the Casa management if anyone could point out interesting Jewish cultural/heritage sites in the neighbourhood (once a big Jewish immigrant hotspot--there's lots of old synagogues, yeshivas, mikvahs etc if you're into that kind of thing). So the Casa calls me & I gave 'em the lowdown. Very funny weird incident.

What do you say in your letters? Do you talk about how they influenced you, point out things in your work that you especially liked, or just say like "thank you for the music [or whatever]"? I'd liked to have written to my favourite celebs back in the day, but I knew I really had nothing interesting or worthwhile to say. "Dear so and so, I love [latest album, film, book etc]!! My favourite bit is [blah blah]. You're my favourite [whatever]. I would really appreciate it if you could please send me your autograph. Best wishes in your future endeavours! Love from Poppy." Actually once I got Kay Whitmore's autograph with a nice message, shortly before the Canucks sent him back to Syracuse.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 June 2003 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

Who did you argue with?

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 2 June 2003 17:55 (twenty years ago) link

Please say Russell Crowe, please says Russell Crowe

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 2 June 2003 17:55 (twenty years ago) link

On comics newsgroups I've had exchanges with Chris Claremont, Peter David, Mark Waid, Robin Rigg and Scott Lobdell. I might have argued with Fabian Nicieza and Warren Ellis, too; I don't remember.

On Doctor Who newsgroups I've argued with Jon Blum, Kate Orman, David McIntee, Paul Cornell, Lance Parkin, Jon DeBurgh Miller (those got VICIOUS), and I think I might have thrown down with Paul Ebbs and Peter Anghelides. (Actually, I doubt I argued with Peter.)

Oh, and I think I got Xorcist to call me a poser on rec.music.industrial once. I used to chat with Joe LeSense before he became Jordana.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 June 2003 18:03 (twenty years ago) link

I said: PLEASE SAY RUSSELL CROWE!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 2 June 2003 19:02 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, and I had a massive throwdown with Russell Crowe over the late 90s Elektra series (Horace, you may commence wanking).

Yeee-eess!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 June 2003 21:24 (twenty years ago) link

An invitation to 69?

As a kid I used to collect autographs. When I wrote to Benny Hill I didn't just get the usual generic signed photo, I got a letter and a personally signed photo. Still have the photo but I'm sure someone at my primary school stole the letter.

When about 3 my brother really liked David Icke for some reason (he was on BBC Breakfast time at that point (David Icke, not my brother)). My mum helped him write to ask for a signed photo. Not only did he get a signed photo but he also got a Ladybird children's book about counting or the alphabet or something that he also signed. Always thought that was really nice of him.

Spot is the dog. See Spot run.

"Run, Spot," says Dick. "Run, Spot," says Dora.

Run, Spot, run.

See Spot's blood. Dick is a lizard.

"Drink blood now," says Dick. "Arrrgh, grfffllfbBBLLfh," says Dora.

Drink, lizard, drink. Dick licks his chops.

The world is ours. Tremble, world, tremble.

I got signed photo of Les Battersby (straight outta Corrie) after telling a friend who works at Granada TV that he rocked... i would have loved a Benny Hill autograph... a king of British comedy if ever there was one... have several records of him... v funny.

i once got an email from bobby seale, founder of the black panthers. i was studying liberal democracies for a level history, and we decided to do some hands on research. i found his site and wrote some deathly socialist nonsense about peddling barbeques being incompatible with the Struggle. he wrote back, telling me that "one must do more than just scratch the surface." "fuck me!," i thought, "i just got an email from bobby seale!"

Roger Ebert responded promptly to ny e-mail and helped settle a dispute between my wife and me concerning the ettiquite of walking out of movies.

So is it proper to run down the aisle slapping everyone on the top of their heads as you exit or not?

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 13:19 (twenty years ago) link

Legendary dub producer Mikey Dread wrote me an email to complain about an imagined slight in a review I wrote of Sandinista!, which he produced. Turned out it was a slang thing, as that's one of my fave albums ever and I would never insult it or him. We are still email friends.

Note to Rosemary: Marjorie Ingall and I are good friends. I've lied to her father. I once had to pretend to be her boyfriend to keep away a drunk stalker. Does she count as famous?

Neudonym, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 13:21 (twenty years ago) link

I think so! (Totally off topic, I had my first experience of meeting someone from the internet at her book signing.)

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 13:34 (twenty years ago) link

I got a package of Viking photographs of Mars from none other than Carl Sagan himself. Also received email from Steve Wozniak.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

It's apparantly only proper if it's a showing of "Birth of a Nation" and the remaining audience members are rooting for the Klan.

If a one-line e-mail professing ignorance counts, then... McGUINN!!!

I can still hardly believe I have an e-mail from him.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 14:45 (twenty years ago) link

As in Roger McGuinn? He wrote me back, turns out he never knew about the Robyn Hitchcock revamp of "Bells of Rhymney."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 14:47 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know about it either.

He wrote *me* back, turns out he's never heard Johnny Marr!!

That is wicked. I just watched Cosmos, and I love the guy.

Roger McGuinn used to post all the time to alt.music.byrds. Still does on rare occasion now.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 15:27 (twenty years ago) link

He wrote *me* back, turns out he's never heard Johnny Marr!!

What what wha-???

Well, Johnny has certainly heard of him.

I should mention I did write an email to Momus back in the day regarding the Stars Forever project (ie it was not a fan letter/email), and he sent me an awfully nice reply.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 15:32 (twenty years ago) link

Colin, how do you reach Ebert? I've been meaning to write him a fan letter for a couple of weeks for his review of Gerry, but haven't even been able to find an email for Ask the Answer Man. Cuz I have a shitty old computer.

I once got into an on-going email argument with someone we were teaming with on a large proposal. End of the project we all got together to celebrate the award - turned out I'd been arguing with an astronaut who'd been on Mir and stuff. I felt so silly for not having recognized their email.

Oh - and one of the SkyLab astronauts sent me a nice "thank you" letter for having given him a tour of our offices - again, I didn't know who it was at the time.

Momus does write nice letters back, sometimes. Sometimes I think he has someone else write on his behalf. Or maybe not. How does one decide which emails to answer?
