Twitter is fine in isolation however people who link Twitter to Facebook LJ et al should be rogered as above

I suppose in it's own setting it makes about as much sense as AIM or MSN. But yeah why feed it out elsewhere? Especially to blogs.

I'm just more depressed that people can't be bothered to write thoughtful coherent peices of writing any more. You do so and get tl;dr. The next generation are going to be brain-damaged monkeys who cant focus for longer than 10 seconds.

Sorry... seem to have caught a serious case of old, today.

does tumblr have a character limit? what makes it different from twitter aside from images/vids being embedded instead of linked?

the double digits thing is funny.. but i think you mean triple!

how many listens do you give each album?

I do mean triple! I didn't feel like correcting it.

I usually give them one listen. If I REALLY like something, I'll listen to it again to make sure I'm not tripping balls before I gush on it.

Lack of desktop/phone push clients would be the most obvious thing; that and the fact nobody's really jumped on the bandwagon ;)

Whiney: I've just remembered that I favourited a couple of your posts because they were things I wanted to check out ... Weird Owl, Mountains, These Are Powers and Emeralds. Should start to check some of those out.

Anyway. Witterings and swearing: https://twitter.com/weesimon

twitter makes sense when i'm drunk and on public transportation at the end of the night, wanting to catalog the weirdos around me (or in my head). i've only ever sent from text though because every time i encounter the WHAT ARE YOU DOING RIGHT NOW? screen at the computer all i can think is i am sitting at a computer, reading, and isn't that fascinating

So, erm, if you are following someone, but they're not following you, they CAN'T read what you have written, right?

Questionable Rock-Frog (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:00 (fifteen years ago) link

If you're set to private they cant.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:26 (fifteen years ago) link

If you've not blocked access and they go to your Twitter page, they can see everything.

"chinese coke prank" (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, but why on earth would they go to my twitter page?

I wish there was a way to follow people without their knowing that you are. And also so people can't see that you are following them.

Though I'm just saying that because of the embarrassment factor... I'm sure that people would find a way to abuse that.

Questionable Rock-Frog (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:36 (fifteen years ago) link

btw I have just added a metric fuckload of random people who I think are ilxors and will prob. remove them just as soon as I work out what the hell is going on. If in the meantime you find it crepey/disturbing tell me and I will gladly remove you with all speed.

"chinese coke prank" (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 04:40 (fifteen years ago) link

There are twitter spamreaders like anywhere else. The real randoms kinda disturb me, like... hey! I'm not a celebrity. Is your life that boring that you have to follow me rambling on about gay porn and synth sequencers?

Questionable Rock-Frog (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 10:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I see it as a means to having actual interesting conversations, not just following other people's lives. I'm about to ditch Stephen Fry because despite loving his work I find him distinctly boring, and the mechanics of attempting conversation with a complete stranger who has 170,000 followers is patently ridiculous (although Charlie Brooker gets to stay because he's actually worth reading).

"chinese coke prank" (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 10:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Adam - my twitter is c h e r r y 2 0 0 0 r o o l z but I don't know how long I'll persevere with this one. On the one hand, it suits the essentially trivial nature of my thoughts. On the other hand, it's a bit of a waste of everyone's time, let's be honest.

I'm sorry I'm still not getting this. If you dont follow it by each others twitter web pages how do you follow each other? I feel like I'm missing something (not that I want in rly)

It's definitely a waste of time, but so's ilx to be honest. It's what fun you get out of it that counts.

Twitter seems to be gaining momentum. I need to fill a big dirty facebook-shaped hole with something; Twitter might not be it, but without trying I'll never know.

Trayce: Your 'home' page (i.e. not the one with your username in the url) contains feeds of those whom you follow. Makes sense once you actually do it.

I find him quite fun; what I can't stand is the way he's now re-Tweeting so much stuff (eg the thing about the blank profile yesterday) because so many of his followers are obviously fucking bell-ends.

From a social-psychology angle I'm fascinated by the way the 'sleb Twitterers deal with having unfettered, two-way access to their fans. Graham Linehan is a joy.

Bad Banana On Broadway (kenan), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 00:30 (fifteen years ago) link

I get spammers who don't say anything and disappear within 24 hours anyway. It's all rather creepy in that regard.

"chinese coke prank" (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 00:35 (fifteen years ago) link

I get a little appalled when a client asks me to set up a Twitter account for him. 1) You don't need me to do that. 2) I'm not going to update the fucker, and unless you are, I can't see the point. 3) Who told you this was a fantastic new way to sell things? Because I want to sock that person in the nose.

Bad Banana On Broadway (kenan), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 00:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually #3 is conditional -- you can sell things on Twitter, sure. If you make things. But look here client man -- you make auto parts. Trust me when I say that Twitter is not your market.

Bad Banana On Broadway (kenan), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 00:42 (fifteen years ago) link

That's for RSS anyway. Jesus.

Technology is routinely fucked over by people who don't get what it's for and go misappropriating it. e.g. Facebook was for SOCIAL networking until old people en masse started hunting down their kids.
