Like "Ms. Miller" doesn't make me think of a treasury undersecretary, it makes me think of a student in an econ seminar or something.

Would you find it condescending if it was "Mr Miller"? Not being snarky here, just throwing it out.

If you go to Wikipedia's page for American Novelists, you might notice something strange: Of the first 100 authors listed, only a small handful of them are women. You could potentially blame this on the fact that there simply are more famous male authors than there are female (a-whole-nother can of worms), but the real reasoning is much more intentional. Wikipedia editors have slowly been moving female authors to a subcategory called American Women Novelists so that the original list isn't at risk of "becoming too large."

most blogging "conferences" whether involving "mommies" or not are glorified marketing events.. Blogging is only a job for like .00001% of people who do it. That photo is o_O but I'm not really sympathetic to complaints about wanting to be taken more seriously as a blogger.

I mean, the tone of the WSJ piece looks a little insulting too. But let's face it, that's what these conferences really are for most attendees -- a vacation. It's like going to SXSW as an amateur musician -- it's related to your craft, but it's mostly just a good time.

This was stunning. Have not heard use of word 'feminisation' so often within 5 minutes. Gf was spitting mad, it was terrible, and Humphreys mainly to blame. Do we have a 'Is Today worse than it used to be?' thread? Because it seems to be.

Laurie Penny could've been a bit less rambling, she might not have been talked over so much. But at least she gets in a decent fairly snappy final point re: feminism not just being about liberating women.

She was really good on 10 O'Clock Live last night and was pretty much recycling what was said there.
I've been told that Humphrys is incredibly rude to female underlings and those young women who might need something professional from him, but who are not colleagues.

i do think that article is sexist though, because it presupposes a contradiction between seeing someone as sexy and seeing someone as an intelligent, autonomous person, which is a deeply weird thing to think.

IDK none of it struck me as too weird, but then I did grow up Mormon with the "just imagine Jesus" advice ruining my own early sex life. I think 'try not to have a constant pornographic internal movie projector about every woman you come in contact with' may be a reasonable goal (or clumsy first step?) if you are trying to see all women as people. Writing about it is kind of goofy but everyone's a fucking navel-gazer these days, even if the topic isn't usually gazing at others' navels.

Like just thinking about my interactions with random men throughout the day, I never walk away thinking, "I hope that guy thought I was witty and kind AND that he wants me to choke on his cock," like really just the former would be ideal. I wouldn't think a guy was sexist if he skipped the second part! (NB I defs don't spend my days trying to fill in others' internal monologues, esp re: me.)
